Energinet.dk Seminar on Norwegian-Danish Gas Connection on 13. September 2010 in Copenhagen Dr. Christoph Merkel, Vice President Sales Northern Europe E.ON Ruhrgas AG
Pan-European Gas Market Unit ( PEG)/ E.ON Ruhrgas AG responsible for gas in the E.ON Group E.ON AG Market Units (s) Spain Italy Russia Central Europe Pan-Eur. Gas UK Nordic US- Midwest E.ON Energy Trading E.ON Climate & Renewables E.ON Ruhrgas HQ 2
Leading Position in European Gas Markets Gas sendout by European majors 1 (in TWh): E.ON Eni GDF Suez GasTerra Wintershall 388 RWE ,099 1,218 1,196 1) 2009 Annual Reports: E.ON, GDF SUEZ, ENI (conversion factor: 1 [email protected] kwh), Wintershall, RWE 2008 Annual Reports: Gas Terra (conversion factor: 1 [email protected] kwh) 3
PEG with Activities along the Entire Value Chain Business activities along value chain Exploration & production Supply (incl. LNG) Infrastructure (Whole-) Sales PEG is leader on the German gas market PEG is one of Europe's leading gas companies PEG has long-standing ties with all important gas producers as well as a broad, diversified supply portfolio Growing importance of E&P and LNG activities Significant role of infrastructure E.ON GT with Germany's largest pipeline system EGS with gas storage activities currently in Germany, Austria, Hungary, the UK etc. Development and use of innovative technology Pooling of mid/downstream shareholdings at E.ON Ruhrgas International 4
E.ON Involvement in the Nordic Gas Industry A 25 % share in the gas supply to Denmark and Sweden, A large investor of gas downstream assets - Öresundsverket CHP in Malmö (300 Mio., start-up 2009), - other CHP and boiler plants, - high pressure gas pipelines and gas distribution grids in Sweden A large investor of upstream and midstream gas assets - Offtaking some 170 TWH Norwegian gas per year - Oil and gas producer in Norway (e.g. Skarv-Idun, Njord) - Shareholder in DEUDAN (25 % share), the pipeline in Germany, south of the Danish border 5
E.ON Interests A competitive Danish and Swedish gas market Operating the Öresundsverket CHP plant in Malmö by E.ON Sverige Utilisation of gas transportation and gas distribution grids of E.ON Sverige Sales to Nordic partners out of our Pan European gas portfolio Sales to gas retail customers in Denmark and Sweden at attractive terms Sales to heat customers in Denmark and Sweden at attractive terms 6
What Action Serves the E.ON Interests Best? A new supply source based on significantly improved infrastructure in Denmark in order to establish a competitive Danish and Swedish gas market also in the future - Unique infrastructure of Danish and Swedish gas industry in the past - 25 years of Danish gas resources covering the Nordic gas demand plus significant gas exports to Germany and since recently to Netherlands 7
Two Solutions Danish-German Expansion Integration into the European gas market by expansion of the German and Danish existing transportation system north and south of Ellund border point Norwegian Gas Infrastructure Reinforcement Connection of the Nordic gas market to Norwegian gas supplies by connecting the Norwegian offshore transportation system to the Danish offshore transportation system GIR Danish - German Expansion 8
Integration into the European Gas Market (Danish-German Expansion) Consequences of a single European gas market for the Nordic gas market Size of the present European gas market 3,300 TWh/a; D/NL/B/A/UK partly F/CH/I Access to diversified gas supplies; pipeline gas from NL, UK, D, N, RUS and LNG from an increasing number of countries and continents e.g. Algeria, Qatar, Nigeria More suppliers and retailers Access to liquid gas hubs Access to huge flexibility (European storages + trading at NCG, GuD, TTF, NBP) Gas market based prices (driven by demand and supply) Implementation planned 2014/15 High regulatory risks Smaller fall back solution with reduced capacities possible 9
Connection to Norwegian Gas Supplies (GIR project) Connection to Norwegian gas Size of Norwegian gas supply of some 1,200 TWh/a Direct access of Norwegian producers to diversified markets like D/UK/F/B Access to major Norwegian producers Flexibility mainly by Danish storage facilities Producer based gas prices Technical concept, business case and regulatory risks to be evaluated Early status of planning, no investment decision taken Implementation may be 2014/15 10
Risks and Chances of Regulation Different regulation in Norway and Denmark resp. Denmark and Germany Causal cost allocation of supply security to different supply routes by SoS implementation 11
Complementary Solutions? Each supply alternative represents a significant investments and costs, which will be passed finally to the customers A future physical Nordic gas supply hub in Denmark? Parallel or staged implementation if both supply routes are competitive and thus offer the same business case e.g. with regards to gas supply costs, tariffs / transportation costs and regulatory risks. 12
Summary E.ON opts for the integration of Denmark and Sweden into the single European gas market since we regard this as the most probable solution granting competitive gas and flexibility prices to the Danish and Swedish market and E.ON also promotes a connection of Denmark to Norway. E.ON has joined the Norwegian GIR project to bring Norwegian infrastructure investment forward 13
