It is that time of year when high schools officially release a new batch of adults out into the world. I have a couple of friends who have seniors graduating. Their seniors are excited to be free of the confines of school and ready to spread their wings and soar. We are adults they proudly proclaim, though, I m sure the parents think less so since they still underwrite them. Being on the other side of that fence for a few years now, I can appreciate that carefree mentality of childhood. Afternoons were spent climbing trees and fences and riding my bike. I never worried about time, bills or where I was going to find the money to fix my car. I used to wonder about what I was going to do or be when I grew up, not worry about what I ll do if this doesn t work out. Resigning from Adulthood It s also taken a few more years to learn this is my life. It is my responsibility to fill it with people and events that make me happy, make me smile, and make me excited. One of those is EWI. I may not be in school, but as we all discover, the learning process never ends. EWI has provided me a venue in which I can grow. It also doesn t hurt that the women in this organization are a true joy to be around. Until next month, you can find me jumping in mud puddles and fingerpainting. 9 Getting to know..rebecca Manzer 1. What does your company do and what is your function within the company? Certified Carpet Cleaning & Restoration, LLC provides flooring care maintenance for carpet, all types of tile, and wood floors. We also clean upholstery & do water damage restoration. My function in the business is receptionist, bookkeeper, estimator, and marketing. 2. How did you get into this business? I married into this business. My husband is a third generation technician in this industry. When I met and married him, he was working for his uncles doing the same thing. About two years after we got married, at the age of 20, things were not working out working for family, so we decided to start our own business. We have been in business for 12 years this November. 3. What do you enjoy most about your current job? The variety and flexibility. I like doing different things. With this job and my current functions, every day is different. I like the flexibility because it allows me to schedule things around our two girls, who are 9 and What was your first job? My first official job was a sales associate at SEARS when I was 17 years old. However, during summer breaks before that, I worked at my great aunt s store and waited tables at a Mexican restaurant. 5. What was your favorite thing about childhood? Our vacations. We would go to Galveston, Texas almost every year. But we also went to Canada and Florida. We drove to all our destinations so the road trip added to the experience. We got to go through other states and we stopped at a lot of tourist attractions. We also camped any time we stayed overnight anywhere. It was very enjoyable and I will never forget them. 6. Tell us something interesting about yourself that a lot of people don t know, a little known fact or accomplishment, past or present. I am an open book, so there s not very much people don t know about me. I was raised by my grandma who adopted me. I have two brothers and two sisters. I was very good in school. I graduated in the top 20 of my class from Tulsa Central High School and received a $40,000 scholarship. I met and married my husband in high school. I loved being pregnant and giving birth. My husband and I designed and built our house ourselves. I received the 2011 Crystal Star Small Business of the Year Award. 7. Who do you consider to be your role model? Why? I have two. First, would be Jesus because I am a Christian and I try to follow His example as best as I can. He knew the best way to live to get the most benefit out of life. I believe we should all try to follow that pattern. Second, would be my Grandma. She was an amazing person. I try all the time to be as hard working, productive, loving, kind, and smart as she was. 8. Tell us a little about what you like to do in your spare time. What is your passion/hobby? I love scrapbooking, hiking, camping and making things. 9. What s on your bucket list? I would like to make a book identifying the photos of birds I have taken. I would like to visit another country besides Canada, and I would like to speak another language fluently. 10. What is the biggest benefit to your being affiliated with Executive Women International? Or, what do you hope to gain from your affiliation with EWI? I would like to gain a database of professional women that I can use as resources. I would also like to develop relationships in order to learn from each other and to strengthen one another personally and professionally. 9 Page

Our congratulations to Executive Judi Meyers and Representative LaQuinda Davison! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also, Larry Mocha, executive of member firm APSCO, Inc., was named Small Business Person of the Year by the Tulsa Regional Chamber. He received the Crystal Star Small Business Award in their annual awards ceremony. Vernice Bersche, Merrill Lynch, welcomed her first grandson, Brandt Lee Bersche, on May 28, Parents are Dustin and Rachel Bersche. 10 Page

12 Reading Rally 2013 Announcement Function leader Debbie Ash and members of this year s Reading Rally Committee have identified two local recipients for this year s literacy project: 1. Family & Children s Services (ages 3-18) 2. Domestic Violence Intervention Services, Inc. (all ages, women and children) This project offers two components: 1. Collecting gently used books and recent magazines: EWI members are encouraged to begin de-cluttering closets and bookshelves in search of gently used books and recent magazines (within six months, address labels removed) that could be donated to the libraries of these shelters that cater to underprivileged children and their mothers. Please spread the news to others who may be looking for an opportunity to do some Spring cleaning or will be attending book fairs in search of donation-worthy books. More details coming soon regarding collection of these books and magazines. 2. Collecting new books and/or accepting monetary donations to purchase them: We hope to bridge the gap between underprivileged children and books. More details coming soon regarding purchasing new books for these children, as well as gift subscriptions to activity publications such as Highlights for the shelter libraries, and/or accepting monetary donations to purchase them. 12 Page

Please remember to bring the book to the meeting so you can pass it on to another EWI member.
