2 Since 1976, the Southern Center for Human Rights, a nonprofit law firm in Atlanta, Georgia, has been a force for change in the criminal justice system. Our mission is to represent people facing the death penalty, challenge human rights violations in prisons and jails, and advocate for criminal justice system reforms on behalf of those affected by the system in the Southern United States. For the past 40 years, SCHR has achieved numerous victories in the struggle to create a justice system that is fair, just, and humane. OPPOSING THE DEATH PENALTY SCHR has represented hundreds of people facing the death penalty, winning four cases before the United States Supreme Court that challenged ineffective assistance of counsel and racial bias in jury selection: Strickland v. Washington, Amadeo v. Zant, Ford v. Georgia, and Snyder v. Louisiana. ENDING HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN PRISONS AND JAILS SCHR s class action litigation has put an end to numerous human rights abuses in prisons and jails throughout the South, including ending the horrific practices of placing incarcerated people in a sweatbox and chaining them to iron rings in isolation cells. MAKING REAL THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO COUNSEL There would be no statewide public defender system in Georgia without the five-year effort and six lawsuits brought by SCHR. SCHR continues to be the sole organization litigating to enforce the constitutional right to counsel for indigent defendants throughout Georgia. ENDING THE CRIMINALIZATION OF POVERTY SCHR s lawsuits to end debtor s prisons have exposed and dismantled private probation extortion, illegal fines and fees, and other practices that criminalize people simply for being poor. REFRAMING THE DEBATE ABOUT CRIME AND PUNISHMENT SCHR s work has helped reframe the debate about crime and punishment, reducing the incentives for politicians to exploit crime and violence for political gain. Now legislators discuss smart on crime policies to replace tough on crime laws, and officials in counties where SCHR has litigated talk about the need to fund schools and drug treatment rather than jails. As you can see, SCHR s 40 th Anniversary is a very important milestone not just in SCHR s history but also in the history of justice in the South. We are proud of the change we have been able to achieve, but there is much work yet to do, and we cannot do it alone. Our success in the struggle for justice depends on the partnership of individuals, foundations, law firms, and businesses that believe as we do that fighting for justice cannot wait. 3 2016 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT Bobby Lee Cook Cook & Connelly The Southern Center for Human Rights proudly presents its Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary criminal defense lawyer Bobby Lee Cook, founder of Cook & Connelly, for setting the standard for courageous and zealous advocacy on behalf of criminal defendants long before top-notch defense of indigent persons was considered a worthwhile goal. For more than six decades, Bobby Lee has stuck up for the unpopular and downtrodden, taking seemingly unwinnable cases and winning them. If you can railroad a bad man to prison, you can railroad a good man, he says. That s why we should always vigorously fight for the constitutional rights of even those who are most despised in our communities. Bobby Lee s efforts to train and mentor criminal defense attorneys has helped to raise the level of criminal defense across the state and move us closer to realizing the constitutional promise of Gideon v. Wainwright that every person charged with a crime be zealously defended by a capable lawyer with the resources needed to present an adequate defense. MASTER OF CEREMONIES SCHR is excited to announce that beloved TV and radio personality Monica Kaufman Pearson will serve as the emcee for Justice Taking Root 2016! Ms. Pearson is the first woman and first person of color to anchor the daily evening news in Atlanta, Georgia where she worked for 37 years at the leading station WSB-TV. She has won over 33 Southern Regional and local Emmy Awards for reporting, anchoring and her Closeups celebrity interview show. We are honored to have such an esteemed journalist with us to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. ENTERTAINMENT Jukebox, a five-member live music collective, is Atlanta s premiere live music band. The band is led by former Blackstreet lead singer and multi-talented Grammy-nominated R&B recording artist, Kermit Quinn.
