4 Keynote Speaker ANDREW MORRIS Andrew Morris is Professor of Medicine, Director of the Usher Institute of Population Health Sciences and Informatics and Vice Principal of Data Science at the University of Edinburgh, having taken up position in August Prior to this Andrew was Dean of Medicine at the University of Dundee. He is seconded as Chief Scientist at the Scottish Government Health Directorate which supports and promotes high quality research aimed at improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of services offered by NHS Scotland and securing lasting improvements to the health of the people of Scotland. His research interests span informatics and chronic diseases. He is Director of the Farr Institute in Scotland funded by the MRC and nine other funders and Convenor of the UK Health Informatics Research Network, representing a 39M investment in health informatics research. Andrew s research interests relate to the application of informatics to study the epidemiological and molecular aetiological basis of diabetes and its complications. He has published over 300 original papers, attracted over 50million in grant funding and was the principal investigator of the Wellcome Trust United Kingdom Case Control Collection for Type 2 Diabetes that has recruited 20,000 individuals and Generation Scotland, a study of the genetic health in 50,000 Scots, and the Wellcome Trust funded Scottish Health Informatics Programme (SHIP). He was awarded the RD Lawrence Award by Diabetes UK in 2003 and the Arnold Bloom Lecture 2013, the Saltire Society Scottish Science Award in 2005 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland s national academy of science and letters, and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2007 he co-founded Aridhia Informatics that now employs over 70 people in Scotland and uses high performance computing and analytics in health care, with deployments in the UK, Middle East and Australasia. Andrew is a Governor of the Health Foundation, a leading UK charity that supports quality improvement in health care. Andrew also chairs the Informatics Board at UCL Partners, London Symposium on Health Informatics
5 Speakers BRENDAN BYRNE Prior to joining TELUS Health, Brendan founded Wolf Medical Systems, which at the time was the largest cloud-based electronic medical record (EMR) provider in Canada. He directed the evolution of Wolf from its inception in 1998 to becoming one of the fastest growing EMR companies in Canada, prior to its acquisition by TELUS Health in Recognized throughout North America as a leading physician and computing expert, he speaks frequently at medical and computing conferences about the importance of leveraging data at the point of care. PIETER CULLIS Dr. Pieter Cullis has co-founded ten biotechnology companies and has published over 300 scientific articles. He co-founded the Personalized Medicine Initiative in 2012 to implement molecularly based medicine into clinical practice. Dr. Cullis was awarded the Prix Galien, Canada s premier prize for achievements in pharmaceutical R&D, in HEATHER DAVIDSON Heather has worked for the BC government since 1991 in a series of progressively senior positions, mostly in the Ministry of Health. She is currently Assistant Deputy Minister of the Partnerships and Innovation Division. She was an early advocate for evidence-based policy and decision making and has maintained strong linkages with the research community throughout her government career. She is currently the Ministry s executive lead for the SPOR Support Unit and the Academic Health Science Network. Heather holds a PhD in Psychology (Adult Development and Aging) from the University of Victoria. Prior to joining the provincial government, she worked as a gerontologist in a variety of clinical settings in Alberta and Ontario. LARS-OLOF ERIKSSON Dr. Eriksson is Executive Vice President, Site and Patient Recruitment at ICON plc, a global Clinical Research Organization serving the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industry. He is an Associate Professor in clinical Pharmacology at Lund University, Sweden and at Rutgers University, School of Health Related Professions in New Jersey. For more than 15 years he has focused on research methodology and business development in clinical research with concentration on site related operations. His main areas of focus include interdependencies between health informatics, infrastructure & processes at a clinical research site, patient engagement and novel cost-effective recruitment strategies. 6 Speakers JUDY ILLES Dr. Judy Illes is a pioneer of the field of Neuroethics. She has made groundmaking contributions to ethical, social, and policy challenges at the intersection of biomedical ethics and neuroscience, including incidental findings in brain imaging and genomics, crosscultural research on neurodegenerative disorders, regenerative medicine, neuroscience and the law, and the commercialization of health care. LARRY LYND Dr. Lynd is a Professor and the Director of the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC. He is also a Scientist at the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcomes Sciences, Providence Health Care. RAYMOND NG Dr. Raymond Ng is a professor in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. His main research area for the past two decades is on data mining, with a specific focus on health informatics and text mining. For the past decade, Dr. Ng has co-led several large scale genomic projects, funded by Genome Canada, Genome BC and industrial collaborators. The total amount of funding of those projects well exceeded $40 million Canadian dollars. He now holds the Chief Informatics Officer position of the PROOF Centre of Excellence, which focuses on biomarker development for end-stage organ failures. PAUL TERRY Dr. Paul Terry provides the vision and technical leadership at PHEMI, a big data warehouse company. He brings over 25 years of entrepreneurial experience to his role on the board of directors for Providence Health Care, Life Sciences BC, Genome BC, and Molecular You. He also advises the BC provincial government on next-generation data strategies and is an adjunct professor in Big Data at SFU Symposium on Health Informatics
