2 The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow in partnership with the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates and the Joint Improvement Team, is hosting the first event in Scotland on the impact of multimorbidity on individuals, professionals and care services. People with multimorbidity (two or more conditions) are increasingly the norm in NHS Scotland, especially in elderly and deprived populations. Yet, most services, many policies and most research and evidencebased guidelines are based on single conditions. Many patients with multimorbidity experience fragmented and poorly coordinated care. This conference will draw on leading research evidence from home and abroad, describing the impact of multimorbidity on individuals, professionals and clinical services. Patients and professionals working in many areas of NHS Scotland will compare their experience of the challenges posed by multimorbidity and consider the implications for how services should develop in the future. Who should attend? Clinicians and health professionals in primary and secondary care, health service managers, health researchers and policy advisors all need to adjust to the growing reality of multiple morbidity, whether the combinations of medical conditions which accrue with age or the mix of physical, psychological and social problems that concentrate in deprived areas. Increasingly, the single disease approach characterising clinical specialties and services, research evidence and guidelines, and professional education and training, is being found wanting, as patients need personalised continuity of coordinated care for combinations of problems. This first national conference on multimorbidity in Scotland will draw on leading research, patient and professional experience and views, and best practice from home and abroad, to identify first steps as NHS Scotland adjusts to the challenges of multimorbidity.
