8 Program Details 8:40 am 9:30 am 8 Innovation Through Collaboration Integrating information systems and technologies across British Columbia s health sector requires a unified and coordinated effort by the vast network of health system partners involved in delivering health care services to the Province of BC. This presentation will examine how the BC Ministry of Health is establishing a more collaborative approach to health sector IM/IT planning that will set the stage for true healthcare transformation. Speaker: Lindsay Kislock, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Sector IM/IT, BC Ministry of Health Lindsay Kislock joined the Ministry of Health as ADM, Health Sector Information Management and IT in July During her tenure at the Ministry of Health, Lindsay has led the successful introduction of the BC Services card, streamlined the timeliness of access to health data for researchers and overseen the implementation of the Ministry s ehealth initiatives. Prior to this appointment, Lindsay served as ADM, Agriculture Science and as ADM, Small Business and Regulatory Reform. Lindsay holds a Master s degree from the Evans School of Public Affairs, University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Lakehead University. 9:30 am 10:20 am Clinical Informatics: Perspectives from the Front Line Clinicians are the primary contributors to and users of health data. This presentation will focus on factors related to data that are used by clinicians for data sharing, decision support, administrative purposes, and practice-based evidence (data mining). Essential elements of human factors engineering will be discussed to demonstrate how clinicians enter and use information in electronic health records with a focus on communication between clinicians, developers and records managers. Speaker: Leanne Currie, RN, PHD, Associate Professor at the UBC School of Nursing Dr. Leanne Currie is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia School of Nursing where she conducts research in the field of nursing, biomedical and health informatics. Dr. Currie earned her Diploma in Nursing from VGH School of Nursing, her Masters in Nursing Informatics from University of California, San Francisco, and her Doctorate in Nursing Science from Columbia University School of Nursing with a focus on biomedical and health informatics. Her program of research involves understanding clinical decision-making, decision support systems, guideline integration and knowledge translation, human computer interaction and visual analytics.
9 Program Details 10:40 am 11:30 am Health Information Management Transformation Partnering to Make a Difference Speaking on behalf of the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and Alberta Health Service s (AHS) Health Information Management (HIM) Team, Shirley will address CHIMA s workforce transformation, evolving roles, and new certifications. With partnerships with many key organizations to influence positive change, HIM, within AHS, has introduced key roles to support the evolving ehealth record and the vision of One Patient, One Record. Speaker: Shirley Learmonth, Director, Health Information Management, Calgary & Area, Alberta Health Services Shirley Learmonth is a Health Information Management professional with over 30 years experience in health care. She holds a Master s in Leadership & Training from Royal Roads University, is certified in Health Information Management and holds numerous management certificates and diplomas. As a strong advocate for change and committed to making a difference within the healthcare environment, Shirley has dedicated many hours to volunteer work including chairing the board for CHIMA HRABC and others, and has worked in partnership with learning health organizations to develop curriculum. 11:30 pm 12:00 pm esafety: A New Partnership in Patient Safety How do we ensure patient safety in our ehealth initiatives? Through partnerships! This presentation on COACH s new esafety Guidelines will describe the stakeholders methodology and data of an esafety Management Program, providing important insights on a robust new approach for ehealth safety. This presentation will be of multidisciplinary interest for those involved in protecting patients from harm, from the initial development of systems to their implementation and data gathering. Speaker: Grant Gillis, Executive Director, Forums & Practices, COACH: Canada s Health Informatics Association Grant Gillis is a recognized leader both domestically and internationally in the healthcare informatics community, with accomplishments in governance and organization, consensus-based development, and quality and conformance solutions. He is a respected subject matter expert earning the reputation of providing both strategic and tactical leadership in numerous major e-health standards engagements. Grant is currently responsible for the Canadian Telehealth Forum (CTF), the COACH Clinician Forum (CCF), along with various Communities of Interests (CoIs), as well as directing COACH s Health Informatics practices including Privacy & Security, esafety and associated offerings and events. 9

Attendees will see a demonstration of how direct-to-patient telehealth is achieving the triple aims of improving healthcare in British Columbia today. Speaker: Ryan Wilson, CEO Medeo Ryan Wilson is a BCom from the Sauder School of Business with a specialization in the Management of Information Systems and is a Certified Information Systems Auditor. He has 15 years of experience delivering technology solutions including critical systems, web applications and infrastructure. Ryan s past experience includes Co-Founding Kubera Payments Corporation, a provider of payment processing services to companies in North America and the Director of Technology for VersaPay (TSX VPY.V) where he designed and built Canada s first real time electronic bill presentment and payment network. Speaker: Dr. Alexandra Greenhill, B.Sc. M.D. CCFP, Physician Board of Advisers, Medeo 10 The presenters will illustrate how to leverage the latest in telehealth technology to deliver patient-focused, physician-driven healthcare while meeting standards for health and security. Dr. Alexandra Greenhill is a nationally recognized Canadian physician leader and technology early adopter. Dr. Greenhill has used over 20 different EMR s in her emergency and family medicine practices in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. In addition, over the last decade, Dr. Greenhill has held many leadership roles, including most recently, Director of the Office for Leadership at the Canadian Medical Association and Associate CEO, BC Medical Association. Her contributions have been recognized with many awards, including WXN s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada 2005 and the Queen Elizabeth II Medal of Service 2012.
11 Program Details 2:20 pm 3:00 pm Lean in Healthcare Real Experience and Endless Possibilities Speaker: Jennifer Mackenzie, VP Strategic Planning, PHSA Jennifer is Vice-President, Strategic Planning, Transformation Support and Innovation at PHSA. She is responsible for establishing enterprise-wide frameworks, systems and processes that articulate and link the organization s corporate strategy, its performance measurement and operational management, into an integrated system, and build organizational capacity to support transformational change. She is a lecturer in the emba Course at UBC, a frequent speaker at conferences, participant in research activities and has received several Achievement Awards including Canada s Outstanding Young Health Executive of the Year Award in Ms. MacKenzie has an MBA and a BSc in Occupational Therapy. 3:00 pm 3:30 pm Short Term Thinking A Risk to Our Legacy Participants will hear from an early adopter who has led the PHSA on a 7-year journey implementing Lean in a wide range of healthcare settings. Along the way, PHSA has conducted over 200 Rapid Process Improvement Workshops and built an entire full-scale, cardboard acute care hospital mock-up in order to optimize the design. Performance improvements include slashing patient wait times for critical services, increased capacity, dramatic improvements to patient safety in high-risk acute environments and compelling cost savings. Mark was one of the speakers featured in TEDx Vancouver 2012, and is witnessing first-hand how competition in the global market place is escalating the need for a new era of innovative and forward-thinking leaders who will make better decisions about our future. He will enlighten, challenge and encourage attendees to consider how short-term thinking could be a risk to our legacy. Speaker: Mark Betteridge, Executive Director and CEO Discovery Parks, Director BCTIA Mark Betteridge is interested in leadership. He is a Director of the British Columbia Technology Industry Association and a founding Director and Board Chair for Covenant House Vancouver. He was also the first President of the UBC Real Estate Corporation and a former Director of the Vancouver Aquarium. Most recently, as the CEO of Discovery Parks, he directs the construction of research facilities that are designed to meet the specific needs of the technology industry, catering to small start-up and post-secondary spin-off companies that are in the business of improving the world we live in. 11
