1 CARMEN A. PULIAFITO, M.D., M.B.A. DEAN, KECK SCHOOL OF MEDICINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Dr. Carmen A. Puliafito was recently reappointed to a second term as Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, a position he has held since 2007, He is also holder of the May S. and John Hooval Dean s Chair in Medicine and Professor of Ophthalmology and Health Management. When reappointed in 2012, he was cited for his instrumental role in the appointments of transformative faculty who help USC achieve academic excellence and influence, not only through their own work, but by serving as catalysts for consequential research and innovative teaching. Since his appointment, Dr. Puliafito has led the continuing transformation of the Keck School into one of the nation s preeminent research-intensive medical schools, with an annual budget of more than $700 million (FY 2013), 4,000 employees, and 1,600 faculty members. He led the integration of 19 separate physician practices into a single 500-physician faculty practice organization under the aegis of USC. He has recruited 17 new Department Chairs and Institute Directors to USC. In his role as dean, Dr. Puliafito also serves as the primary academic officer of the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center, one of the nation s largest and most important safety net teaching hospitals. Dr. Puliafito is a renowned ophthalmologist, recognized worldwide for his innovative advances in treatment, including his co-invention of optical coherence tomography (OCT), a technology that has revolutionized the study of the human macula in health and disease. For his work on OCT, he was awarded (along with James Fujimoto and Eric Swanson) the 2002 Rank Prize the world s most prestigious award in optoelectronics. In 2012, also for his work on OCT, Dr. Puliafito was awarded (along with James Fujimoto, Eric Swanson, David Huang and Joel Schuman) the Champalimaud Vision Award, often called the Nobel Prize for Vision, which comes with a $1.3 million prize, the largest monetary prize in the field of vision science and among the largest scientific and humanitarian prizes in the world. From 2001 to 2007, Dr. Puliafito served as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, which has

2 remained No. 1 in U.S. News & World Report s rankings of eye hospitals since Prior to his work at Bascom Palmer, he served as founding director of the New England Eye Center and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Tufts University (1991 to 2001), during which time he earned an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Puliafito started his career at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School, where he was the founder of the Laser Research Laboratory and associate professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School until A cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Medical School, he completed his residency and fellowships in ophthalmic pathology and vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

3 ARA TAVITIAN, M.D. Dr. Ara Tavitian is an alumnus of USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Dr. Tavitian completed his residency in Internal Medicine and his fellowship in Gastroenterology. He has successfully established various integrated health care delivery models including multi-specialty medical groups, integrated provider network organizations, and long term acute care hospital systems.

4 STEPHEN B. GRUBER, M.D., PH.D., M.P.H DIRECTOR OF THE USC NORRIS COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE PROFESSOR OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE Dr. Gruber is a physician and scientist. For the past 25 years he has been studying the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer. As a practicing physician, Dr. Gruber is a nationally recognized expert in hereditary cancer and continues to see patients and families with genetic susceptibility. As a scientist, Dr. Gruber has made important discoveries about the causes of cancer, and discoveries about how to prevent cancer in patients and families. Dr. Gruber obtained his Bachelor s Degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his Master s in Public Health and PhD in Cancer Epidemiology from Yale. He went on to medical school and his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed fellowships in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and in clinical medical genetics at the University of Michigan. After serving on the faculty at the University of Michigan for 14 years, Dr. Gruber was recruited to lead the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in December, 2011, where he holds the H. Leslie Hoffman and Elaine S. Hoffman Chair in Cancer Research. Dr. Gruber continues to see patients, run a research laboratory, and lead the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

5 ANDREW P. MCMAHON, PH.D., FRS Andrew P. McMahon, Ph.D., FRS, is director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC. He is Provost Professor and the inaugural holder of the W. M. Keck Professorship of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. In addition, he chairs the newly created Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the Keck School. McMahon also holds an appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Prior to joining USC, McMahon was the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University and served on the Executive Committee of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. In 1993, he joined Harvard University as a full professor, and from 2001 to 2004, served as chair of its Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. McMahon also served as professor in the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and was a founding principal faculty member in the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. Before arriving at Harvard, McMahon led the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Roche Institute for Molecular Biology in Nutley, N.J. He previously held the position of staff scientist at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, where he started his independent research program. McMahon received his bachelor s degree from St. Peter s College, Oxford University and his Ph.D. from University College in London. He subsequently worked for three years as a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology. McMahon is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal Society (London), as well as an elected Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization. He has served as an editor of the journals Development and Developmental Biology, and on the editorial boards of several other scientific journals, including Genes and Development and Current Biology. McMahon s wife, Jill, is also an accomplished scientist and continues her research at USC as part of her husband s team. The McMahons daughter, Samantha, graduated from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, and their son, Sean, started high school this fall. An avid trail and marathon runner, McMahon is eager to learn about recommended running trails in the Los Angeles area that he and his wife might explore.
