Students will acquire an understanding and a command of the basic concepts of linear systems, functions and related transfer functions, electric circuit theory, electronic circuits, the physical principle of semiconductors and logic families, electronic and photonic devices, materials technology and its application to engineering problems. (CIN/352/2009, BOE ) Generical: 7. EFFICIENT USE OF EQUIPMENT AND INSTRUMENTS - Level 1: Using instruments, equipment and software from the laboratories of general or basic use. Realising experiments and proposed practices and analyzing obtained results. Transversal: 2. SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING - Level 1. Completing set tasks within established deadlines. Working with recommended information sources according to the guidelines set by lecturers. 3. EFFICIENT ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION - Level 1. Planning oral communication, answering questions properly and writing straightforward texts that are spelt correctly and are grammatically coherent. 4. THIRD LANGUAGE. Learning a third language, preferably English, to a degree of oral and written fluency that fits in with the future needs of the graduates of each course. 5. TEAMWORK - Level 1. Working in a team and making positive contributions once the aims and group and individual responsibilities have been defined. Reaching joint decisions on the strategy to be followed. 6. EFFECTIVE USE OF INFORMATI0N RESOURCES - Level 1. Identifying information needs. Using collections, premises and services that are available for designing and executing simple searches that are suited to the topic. 1 / 11

2 Teaching methodology The course combines the following teaching methods: - Lectures to present the topic. - Independent learning: skill reinforcement activities are carried out at home using self-learning material. - Self-assessment and co-assessment of assignments. - Cooperative learning. - Project-based learning: a team project is undertaken during the last few weeks of the course. - Experiment-based learning: much of the course is taught in the laboratory. Learning objectives of the subject 1. To describe an electrical signal and its relationship with the fact of transmitting information. 2. To describe voltage difference, current intensity, and electrical power, their units, and the corresponding multipliers. 3. To describe the passive sign convention. 4. To formulate the voltage-current relationships for the following circuit elements: resistor, independent voltage source, independent current source, cable, switch, linearly controlled voltage source, and linearly controlled current source. 5. To explain the concept of electrical amplifier. 6. To describe the four amplifier types (voltage-voltage, voltage-current or transconductance, current-voltage or transresistance, and current-current) as well as the corresponding linear models. 7. To analyze moderately complex electrical circuits made up by the circuit elements listed in Item 4 using Ohm's law and the following circuit analysis techniques: Kirchoff voltage las (KVL); Kirchoff current (KCL) law; serial and parallel associations; superposition theorem; Thévenin's theorem; Norton's theorem. 8. To describe the reference or datum node of an electrical circuit and to analyze moderately complex electrical circuits made up by the elements listed in Item 4 including a reference node using Ohm's law and the circuit analysis techniques listed in Item To model physical systems of low complexity using electrical circuits. 10. To conceive electronic circuits as information processing systems. 11. To describe an operational amplier (op amp) and its three operation modes: linear mode, positive saturation mode, and negative saturation mode. 12. To describe the relationship between negative feedback and the operation mode of an op amp. 13. To describe the model of an ideal op amp for its linear mode (virtual shortcircuit), positive saturation mode, and negative saturation mode. 14. To describe a (general purpose) diode and an LED are and understand its two operation modes of interest: forward biasing and reverse biasing. 17. To analyze diode-based rectifier circuits (half-wave rectifier and bridge rectifier, with and without reference node) as well as circuits (with and without reference node) made up by up to 4 general purpose diodes/leds, 2 op amps, and any number of the circuit elements listed in Item To describe a BJT (npn and pnp) and its three operation modes of interest: forward biased, saturation, and cut-off. 19. 9 Planning of activities CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES Hours: 13h Theory classes: 13h These activities are undertaken in the classroom and alternated with lectures. They include problems and other exercises that require the application of concepts presented by the lecturer, as well as group discussions of the students' solutions. Some of these activities will be subject to assessment. REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES Hours: 65h Guided activities: 1h Self study: 64h Each theory-based lecture will be associated with a set of group or individual activities designed to reinforce the concepts that have been presented. These activities are undertaken outside of the classroom and consist of problems, reading tasks, information searches and the writing of technical documents. 10 EXPERIMENTAL AND APPLIED SESSIONS Hours: 21h Guided activities: 3h Laboratory classes: 9h Self study: 9h In these sessions, the students will take part in practical laboratory sessions and other activities that enable them to experiment with and apply knowledge acquired during the theory-based lectures. They will be carried out in groups of two students. This notebook will be handed into the lecturer at least once during the course. This assignment will contribute to the mark entitled Laboratory in the course infoweb. 7. EFFICIENT USE OF EQUIPMENT AND INSTRUMENTS - Level 1: Using instruments, equipment and software from the laboratories of general or basic use. Realising experiments and proposed practices and analyzing obtained results APPLIED PROJECT Hours: 28h Guided activities: 6h 30m Laboratory classes: 10h 30m Self study: 11h In approximately the last six weeks, the students will undertake a simple project that enables them to apply the knowledge acquired to create a functional prototype. This activity will be undertaken in teams of two students. Support materials: Electronic instrumentation Electronic material PC and circuit simulation software Support material available on the digital campus Reading list for the course Online documents Descriptions of the assignments due and their relation to the assessment: At the end of the project, each group will perform an oral presentation and will hand in a written report in which the project that has been carried out is described in detail. 10 / 11
