1 How to search for, view and download e-books and audio books onto your portable devices (i.e., i-pad, i-phone etc.) If you are logged into a computer anywhere in the world, you will be able to view and read e-books and listen to audio books from our school district s Follett Shelf collection. If you download two Apps onto your portable devices, Destiny Quest and BryteWave, you will also be able to access our e-books and audio books on them. Note that if an e- book has the text-to-speech feature, you will be able to read the text on your portable devices, but its text-to-speech feature will not work. You should be able to play audio books on your portable devices, however, once you have downloaded them, but they may not work on all browsers/versions of portable devices etc. The steps below walk you through this process from square one. For the sake of this example I have used an i-pad. Turn on your i-pad. This home screen, or a screen similar to it, appears: Tap on the App Store icon. It is blue with a white A and circle in the middle. If it is not on the first screen, such as is the case in the screen shot above, then swipe the screen to the left or right to find it. The App Store icon looks like this: The App search screen appears. The upper right-hand corner of the screen has a search bar in it: 1

2 In the search bar, type in Destiny Quest. Note that even before you finish typing a Suggestions menu will pop up. Tap on destiny quest in the list that appears. A screen similar to the one below with the Destiny Quest App in the upper left-hand corner appears: Tap on the word GET. 2

3 The word INSTALL appears in green letters: Tap on the word INSTALL. Note that a pop up menu may appear asking you to sign in to your itunes Store. If this is the case, type in your itunes password and click OK. Both the Destiny Quest App and the BryteWave App are free. If you have a SD71 i-pad processed through the IT department, they will have given you a login. If you have forgotten it, contact the IT help desk. Once you sign in this screen appears. Tap on Open. 3

4 The next screen that appears is the Destiny Quest screen: This is the only time you will have to fill in the connection information for your school district. Where it says Enter Library URL or IP Address (grey letters) type in: library.sd71.bc.ca as shown below: Tap on Connect and this screen appears: Tap on your school from the list. You may have to scroll down to find your school. For this example, I chose Airport Elementary as the school I belong to. This screen appears: 4

5 Where it says User ID and Password, enter your AMS username and password then tap on Log in. For this example, I logged in as if I was an Airport teacher. This screen, or one similar to it, appears: To see which e-books are in the collection, tap on FollettShelf on the left-hand side of the screen: 5

6 This screen appears, or one similar to it: Instructions from here will focus on e-books. At the end, additional information for audio books will be added, although they are very similar to the e-books. Tap on e-books. This screen similar to this one appears: As of September, 2015, there were over 160 e-books available to the elementary teachers and students across our district. You are able to choose how you prefer to have the e-books displayed by tapping on the Sort by menu in the upper right-hand corner: This brings up a variety of options: 6

7 Note that you can also narrow your search by choosing one of the filters on the lefthand side of the screen. Once you find a book that looks interesting, tap on the title to see what it is about. For this example, I chose Belle of Batoche from the above screen. This screen appears: 7

8 To open the book, simply click on Open. This screen appears: (Note, if a window pops up asking you to login, type in the username and password you use to login to your school library.) From this point on, the instructions for navigating within the e-book are the same as when the e-book is being viewed on a computer, i.e., to activate the top and bottom toolbars, tap on the middle of the screen. Instructions for working with the e-book can be found in Learn71.ca Library Commons Destiny Help Sheets how to view an e- book on a computer. Either play around with the icons on the toolbar, or review to the help sheet mentioned. To Download the BryteWave App The BryteWave App is simply an e-book/audio book player. It allows you to download these resources as well as play them. Go to your Home screen: 8

9 Tap the blue App Store icon with a white circle and A in the centre. Such as is the case with the screen above, you may need to swipe the screen to the left or right to find it. Notice that the Destiny Quest App is now on my Home Page and yours as well. This is the icon: Tap on it. The Apps Search screen appears: In the Search bar, type in BryteWave. As you do this you will see some suggestions appear in the pop-up box: Tap on follett brytewave k-12 edition. When you do this screen appears with the BryteWave App in the upper left-hand corner: 9

10 Click on GET. The word INSTALL appears: You may be asked to enter your Apple ID password. If your i-pad is from SD71, it will have a set password. If you do not know it contact the IT Help Desk. If your ipad is from home, you will have set up your own personal login: Once you do, this screen appears: 10

11 Tap on OPEN. This screen appears: Where it says Location, tap on the arrows to the right and scroll down the list. Then tap on British Columbia. In the School section, start typing in your school name, then tap on your school from the pop down menu that appears. Where it says Username and Password, login with your AMS username and password. You will only have to set the location and school up once. Every other time you tap on the Destiny Quest App to access our e-books and audio books you will not have to do this step. 11

12 Once filled in, tap on Log In. This screen appears displaying all of your e-book and audio book checkouts. You can click on Open Book to keep reading an e-book, tap on Play to continue listening to an audio book, or tap on Return Early to return any titles you are finished with. If you want to download a book, click on Open Book. This screen appears: 12

13 The advantage of downloading a title is that you will not need a connection to the internet to read/play it should you want to read/play it where there is no connection. When you tap on Download Title a page from the title will appear with a download progress bar at the top of the screen: When finished downloading, a notice will appear in the upper left-hand corner and you will be able to begin working with the title: 13

14 You will notice the same tools in the top tool bar. Remember, if you do not see the top and bottom tool bar tap on the middle of the screen. If you want to do a new search, you need to click the Home button on your i-device to pull up all the Apps you have, then tap on the Destiny Quest App icon. The Destiny Quest App is basically an on-line card catalogue, that allows you to browse the collection including e-content, as well as check out books, place holds and look up your account status. When you do so, a screen similar to this one opens up: You can enter a search term in the top tool bar (right-hand corner) or you can tap on FollettShelf icon on the left-hand side of the screen, which organizes search results neatly into boxes by material type. Note: If you click on FollettShelf, or enter a search term, you will be taken to the Universal Search screen (the tab of the window at the top of the screen says Universal Search. ) If you ever want to get back to the screen above (Top Ten, New Arrivals etc.) you need to press twice on your i-pad s home buttom (i.e., the button top to the right or left-hand side of the i-pad screen that you use to turn the i-pad on and off. When you do this the windows you have open will appear. Simply tap on the window you would like displayed, such as the Airport Elementary Library home page above. 14

15 Basically: Destiny Quest is an on-line card catalogue. It lets you browse and search your library s collection, including digital content such as e-books and audio books. You are also able to see your account status. So, if you want to do these things tap on the Destiny Quest App when you open up your i-pad. You are all set up now so do not have to download the App again etc. Brytewave is a platform for content on i-devices. It is where you go to read e-books, play audio books, download content etc. It is an audio book player/e-book reader. It is like a digital library where you can pluck a digital title off the shelves and use it. Audio books basically work the same as e-books. The additional tool is a play button. Want more than one student to have access? Consider buying a multi-headphone splitter than when plugged into the portable device will allow up to 5 students to plug headsets into the splitter. They run from $2 to $15. 15
