International Summer University of Environmental Sciences (ISU) - Renewable Energies and Climate Protection- Organizational Guidelines of the International Summer University of Environmental Sciences (ISU Env.Sc.) Preliminary remarks Following the first contact, the interested applicant will obtain the application form, Organizational Guidelines and the Terms of Participation at the ISU Env. Sc. The papers have to be studied carefully to avoid unnecessary enquiries and time delays. The contact is extensive. We aim to answer each enquiry in a few days time. High amount of enquiries can cause longer delays so we ask for patience in such cases. Up to now, there is no possibility for individual participants to obtain financial support in order to cover their travel costs and course fees by AfEU e.v.. The financial means of the AfEU e.v. are used exclusively for the organization of lectures and excursions for all participants. German Academic Exchange Service holds a databank of grants: in German in English. Specialties for participants from non EU-countries For participants from countries with obligation to hold a visa it is necessary to obtain the visa for Germany in time. Please take into consideration the possibility of long processing time at the embassy. Following documents will be provided by the AfEU e.v.: Confirmation of Admission for the application at the German Embassy Confirmation of Accommodation Registration of the organizer in the German Association Register Objectives The contribution of the ISU Env.Sc is providing knowledge and demonstrating acting alternatives. As a Forum of Environmental Sciences ISU Env. Sc. offers lectures, discussions and dialogue with experts for information and support of active doing. In particular, the ISU Env.Sc. supports young people with scientific and practical experience from various disciplines and countries with focus on the field of Sustainable Rebuilding of Industry and Society, Protection of Resources, Environment und Climate and Renewable

2 Energies. Lectures of experts in these fields as well as excursions to relevant sites should establish close relation to the real problems of environmental sciences and their practical solutions. A balanced mixture of topics from natural, engineering and economic sciences should demonstrate the complexity of the problems and their interrelations. The ISU Env.Sc. is an opportunity for knowledge exchange, experience sharing and networking. As an extension of the ISU Env.Sc., the qualification as European Energy Manager is offered to interested individuals by a corresponding degree course (e-learning). Organizer / Patronage Organizers are the Harz University of Applied Sciences in co-operation with the Anhalt Academy of Energy and Environment Inc. (AfEU e.v.) and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The International Summer University of Environmental Sciences is under the patronage of The Chamber of Engineers of Saxony-Anhalt (Germany). Participants The ISU Env.Sc. focuses on young people with academic and practical background, specifically students and young scientists in Natural Sciences, Engineering and Economics as well as young entrepreneurs in these fields. As a forum of environmental sciences the ISU Env.Sc. offers (to experts from economics and administration and to interested public) the opportunity to attend only particular events. Participants should at least speak English at least at the European level A1/A2 (or another equivalent). Basic knowledge of German is useful but it is no precondition. Scientific Programme The International Summer-University of Environmental Sciences (ISU Env. Sc.) takes place yearly for three weeks from the end of August until the beginning of September. The programme consists of two parts- scientific programme and cultural-tourist programme. The scientific part includes introductory lectures on climate, nature and environment protection and lectures on basic problems of renewable energies, resource management and economic effects and developments connected with them. The programme contains lectures, seminars/exercises, case studies, online work, excursions, self-study and individual supervision of small study groups corresponding to the state of knowledge. Curriculum / time table will be presented and updated via Internet. The final curriculum will be delivered by and handed over at arrival at the conference office. Languages: English and German The lectures will be given primarily in English and exceptionally in German. For the German lectures, documents in English will be available. For better understanding there will be a summary in English during the lectures. All lectures will be made available as a file in English language, too. Further literature is available in English or German optionally.

3 Certificate Each participant will be awarded a certificate of the International Summer University. A certificate with maximum of 6 ECTS credit points according to the Bologna system can be awarded to students of EU-countries if the students additionally prepare and defend a project work including presentation to the participants and the examining committee during the ISU. Sites of ISU Env.Sc. The main conference site is one of the two locations of the Harz University of Applied Sciences, the city of Wernigerode in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt. Wernigerode is part of the biggest county, Landkreis Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt. Wernigerode is famous for its typical frame houses and its historic centre. Historic Centre of Wernigerode (Foto: M. Baar) The most important tourist features in and around Wernigerode are the Castle of Wernigerode and the Mountain Brocken. Castle Wernigerode Brocken (1.142m above sea level) The lectures will be held mostly at the Department of Automation and Computer Sciences of the Harz University of Applied Sciences. The Harz University was founded in 1991 and belongs to the younger group of University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

4 Harz University of Applied Sciences Wernigerode Department of Automation and Computer Sciences Building Papierfabrik Friedrichstraße D Wernigerode Excursions Group excursions will be carried out to scientific and technical institutions within the state Saxony-Anhalt. The following excursions are planned: Teutloff Competence Centre of Renewable Energies and the Agricultural Biogas Plant in Barby, an excursion to the Hydroelectric Power Plant in Wendefurth, Oberharzer Wasserregal, and plant visits such as the municipal utility of Dessau-Rosslau. The costs of transport will be covered by the ISU Env.Sc. Excursion to the large dam in Wendefurth during the ISU 2013 Cultural and Tourist Programme The varied programme offers visits / sightseeing to the sites of the city Wernigerode for example the Castle Wernigerode or the smallest house of Wernigerode. Dessau-Rosslau is also a very good starting point for visiting other cities such as Leipzig or Berlin, as well as for visiting the world cultural heritage sites like Lutherstadt Wittenberg and the Garden empire Dessau-Wörlitz.

5 Application The application is to be made by the application form at the web site There you can find the Organizational Guidelines and the Terms of Participations as well as the current dates. Fees The fees for attending the scientific programme of the whole ISU summer course are EUR. We ask you to attempt to transfer the course fee up to the 17 th of July of the current year. Please keep in your mind additional charge for bank transfer! For participating in single days/events the charges can be found on the list at the web site These figures are approximate only. The actual fees will be communicated in written communication. Accommodation Accommodation is possible in a hotel, in a guest house and in a hostel. The Jugendherberge Wernigerode is the closest accommodation to the Harz University of Applied Sciences. Accommodation in student dormitories is not available.

We only act as intermediary in exceptional cases. Please notice that Wernigerode is an acknowledged health resort and therefore a visitor s tax of 2,50 / overnight stay needs to be paid. Provisions The provisions have to be done by each participant individually. We recommend to book breakfast at the accommodation site. Lunch is available at canteens of the Harz University of Applied Sciences. Near the university campus you will find a coffee shop. Provisions can be estimated with 15 EURO per day. Arrival The arrival by plane can take place via following airports: Airport Frankfurt Airport Berlin-Tegel Airport Berlin-Schönefeld Airport Leipzig-Halle (the closest airport) Another airport can be used as well and train connection can be used to continue the journey to Dessau-Rosslau and Wernigerode. From all airports there is train connection that needs to be paid to the main station of Dessau-Rosslau and Wernigerode. The venue for the first week is Dessau-Roßlau. The transfer to Wernigerode is organized by the ISU Team. The venue for the last two weeks is Wernigerode and the conference office is at the Papierfabrik Building (Room 9.412) of the Harz University of Applied Sciences, Department of Automation and Computer Sciences, Friedrichstraße 57-59, Wernigerode. The destination of the journey is the main train station Wernigerode Hbf. Each participant should announce his/her arrival in time to the address isu@hs-harz.de so our volunteers can meet the traveller at the main station. In case of travelling by car you can use the parking places near the Papierfabrik Building.

Up to this date the correspondence occurs on the above mentioned address of the Harz University of Applied Sciences. Prospect / Closing statement Terms of Participation at the International Summer University of Environmental Sciences ISU Env.Sc. and the Organizational Guidelines apply for organization and participation. We recommend you to bring a notebook or a netbook, because this way the data transfer and the study work can be facilitated.
