2 The British Dental Trade Association What is The British Dental Trade Association? The BDTA represents and supports manufacturers and suppliers of dental products, services and technologies, to the benefit of members, the dental profession and the public. Members gain access to a range of services designed to benefit them and promote the well-being of the industry as a whole and the profession gains the reassurance of dealing with like-minded individuals who are committed to providing a high quality standard of service. The BDTA is a non-profit making organisation governed by a Council of elected representatives, which meets six times a year. The Council establishes committees and working groups to carry out Marketing, Training, Editorial and Statistical activities. One of the benefits of being a notfor-profit organisation is that every penny generated from Showcase is invested straight back into the dental industry. The BDTA was established in 1923 and today represents the interests of over 140 member companies. Our aim The British Dental Trade Association s main aim is to promote and maintain a viable dental industry in the UK. Achieving our aim The BDTA employs full time professional staff to; 1 communicate industry information through regular newsletters and a quarterly magazine 2 provide UK and European statistics and trends analysis 3 support Continuing Professional Development through the provision/sponsorship of training programmes 4 offer advice and helpline services to members 5 organise the UK s largest dental exhibition, Dental Showcase 6 represent and promote members interests to national and international bodies and Government 7 offer a range of financial benefits and discounts 8 promote BDTA members to the dental team 9 host a number of social events throughout the year, including the Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting, to allow members to forge new business relationships for the benefit of dentistry 10 work with the media to create coverage to promote the dental industry to dental professionals and the wider public

Members range from large, international organisations to smaller, local enterprises and we invite organisations involved in pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare, manufacturing, retailing, distribution, publishing and financial services to join our Association. Members are from a wide cross section of the dental industry and BDTA membership has helped them to save time, money and resources and add value to their business through the exchange of ideas, information, market analysis and trends. Membership of the BDTA is important to our company as it allows us to network with other companies and to further understand developments in the market. BDTA Member

Information As a BDTA member you would be kept up to date with the latest news and regulatory information through the BDTA Newsletter, quarterly magazine and members area of the website. This acquisition of knowledge helps you stay ahead of the competition. You would also receive a database of active dental practices and dental laboratories in the UK to help with territory planning and targeted mailings. In summary members benefit from: 1 Complimentary database of active dental practices and laboratories in the UK 2 Discount on all British Standards documents ordered through the BDTA 3 Regular copies of BDTA News 4 Access to all the latest national and regional dental news via the BDTA website 5 Complimentary copies of the trade s quarterly magazine Dentaltrader for all staff members 6 Access to information in the members area of the BDTA website Training In business today, people are recognised as a major asset. The BDTA acknowledges the importance of professional training for staff as a means of motivation and selffulfilment. Setting the industry standard is the BDTA Certificate Introduction to Dentistry; an introductory course aimed at those who supply and provide a service to the dental industry. The self study distance learning course is supported with a laboratory workshop course and revision seminar. Members of the BDTA can take the course at a discounted rate, and laboratory workshops and revision seminars are available to support the learning and understanding. The following training initiatives are available to members: 1 Discount on the BDTA Certificate: Introduction to Dentistry training course 2 Laboratory workshop and revision seminars available to support learning and aid understanding

5 What can the BDTA do for you? Advice You will already be aware of the high cost of advice and the resources it absorbs. The BDTA helpline offers free practical, legal and technical advice and guidance to members on a wide range of issues, from regulatory matters to quality assurance. Our staff are also on hand to assist with day-today queries. Advice is available on: 1 Standards and legislation 2 Regulatory matters 3 Quality assurance 4 Import / export regulations 5 Storage and carriage 6 Labelling and instructions for use 7 Promotional activities Each year the BDTA organises Dental Showcase, the UK s largest and most successful dental exhibition. It is the premier opportunity for all companies in the dental industry to promote their products and services to more than 13,000 members of the dental team. BDTA members benefit from a discount on stand cost, advertising and sponsorship rates and there are also opportunities for joint promotional activities. Each member company receives a free listing of contact details, corporate and product information on the BDTA website, which receives well over 5,000 visitors per month, offering the opportunity to publicise its products and services. Members can also request to have job vacancies within their company advertised on the jobs sections of the website, which is free of charge. The BDTA continues to undertake an aggressive marketing campaign to promote the benefits of using BDTA members to the profession. Our annual statistical publication, Spotlight, produced exclusively for members, highlights dental market statistics and trends using information collated from a number of key sources within the industry and presents the data in one handy publication. Information on surgery consumables, the laboratory market, dental publications, salaries and market size have all been included in the report in the past. Membership of the BDTA is important to our company as it Provides a voice for our views, promotes the industry to profession, promotes dentistry to the wider community and creates great networking events. 7 What can the BDTA do for you? Networking opportunities The BDTA organises events throughout the year which encourage the establishment and development of productive business relationships. As a BDTA member you are also entitled to optional membership of Committees/Working Groups offering opportunities to influence how the Association is run. The networking opportunities available include: 1 Highly subsidised place at the BDTA Annual Conference 2 Reduced delegate rate at the Midwinter Meeting 3 Discounted places at the summer social networking event 4 Optional membership of BDTA committees/ working groups Export support The UK dental industry is renowned throughout the world for supplying high quality products and services, as well as adhering to national and international regulations. Exporting is an important way for members to grow their businesses and the BDTA is keen to offer support in this area. Representation The BDTA represents and promotes members interests to national and international bodies, both professional and legislative and is an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry, which has improved its lobbying capabilities. The BDTA represents the interests of members in the following ways: 1 Active participation in creating national and international standards 2 Presenting the views of the industry to the ABHI, ADDE and FIDE 3 Regular contact with dental associations and professional bodies 4 Involvement with the All Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry Membership of the BDTA is important to our company as it keeps us aware of current legislation, statistics and technical information. BDTA Member

9 What does the BDTA Code of Practice mean for you? The Association s Code of Practice was updated to conform to current, stricter legislation, improve fairness, increase membership standards and maintain a strong selfregulation system. By becoming a member of the Association and complying with the BDTA s Code of Practice, you are committing to provide every customer with the convenience, choice and confidence that they have come to expect from a BDTA supplier, thus putting you at a competitive advantage. There is a complaints and appeals procedure, which includes clear penalties for breach of the Code. Secretariat The Association s Secretariat believes that its own quality systems should be of a demonstrably high standard and complies with the requirements of ISO9001:2008. How does membership work? Membership is available to any established business engaged in the manufacture, supply and/or servicing of goods or services used in the business of dentistry. The four membership categories currently available are: Membership Category Full Provisional Affiliated Group Qualifying Criteria Businesses that have established a satisfactory trading history Businesses that have recently started trading Businesses whose main business is not dentistry (e.g. finance houses) A business which is a subsidiary part of an existing member
