6 Florida Veterinary Technology Program Updates This update brought you by Richard Quartararo The St. Petersburg College School of Veterinary Technology and the St. Petersburg College Veterinary Technology Society (VTS) had an eventful fall semester planned. In September, we held a successful blood drive with OneBlood. Both students, faculty, and staff rolled up their sleeves for the opportunity to save lives and be Vet Tech Heroes. We have a second blood drive scheduled for November 4th. In September, students volunteered their time with the Pinellas Animal Foundation (PAF) at their annual BOWser Ball & Auction. During this event, student volunteers helped raise money for the foundation, some of which was donated to the school for student scholarships. On October 14 th (as part of celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week) the school will be hosting an open house event to showcase the veterinary technology campus, pet adoptions, and the opportunities that exist for those interested in entering the veterinary technician field. This event, with the theme of Animals Helping People, will feature a variety of hands-on experiences, including a simulation room where guests can experience a day in the life of a veterinary technician. Various animal related organizations and businesses will also be present at this event to give presentations, demonstrations, and to provide educational opportunities for the general public, as well as current and prospective students and their families. The school is anticipating this open house to bring in more attendees than in previous years, to include prospective students from outside of Florida who are flying in to attend this 3-hour event. On October 17th, VTS members, in conjunction with the college s student government association, will be participating in a walk and STEPPING OUT TO STOP DIABESTES. This walk (through the American Diabetes Association) is an event that helps to raise money and awareness for the battle against diabetes. The VTS is participating in this effort as part of their continued commitment to civic engagement and community outreach initiatives. In December, the VTS is holding a Senior Banquet. This banquet will honor this December s graduates of the veterinary technology programs at SPC. During this event, the VTS will be presenting a donation to a local animal related organization that is in need of financial assistance. Last, but not least, this semester the VTS is working towards becoming a student chapter of NAVTA. The VTS is undertaking this endeavor in order to enhance their club and offer its members (students) more benefits than has been offered without the NAVTA connection. Veterinary Technology Program Updates! Please tell us what your program has going on! Submit notes and photos to info@thefvta.net
