1 Quarterly Newsletter of Gamma Rho Chapter September 2015 Sigma Theta Tau International Sigma Theta Tau I Connections Connec About STTI Your Founded in 1922, STTI with members in approximately 490 chapters throughout 85 countries supports the learning, knowledge, and professional development of nurses making a difference in global health. Sigma Theta Gamma Rho Sigma Theta Tau The founders chose the name from the Greek words Storge, Tharsos and Time meaning love, courage and honor. Organizational Mission The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, is advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Society Vision Sigma Theta Tau International's vision is to be the global organization of choice for nursing. STTI is you! STTI has over 130,000 members, 1 st U.S. organization to fund nursing research, 39% have Masters and/or doctoral degrees, 51% have nursing staff positions, 19% are administrators or supervisors, 18% have faculty/academic positions, 12% are advanced practitioners President's Note Helping You Achieve Your Professional Goals The start of a new school year always brings excitement and energy around campus and in the classroom. It is wonderful to see so many new faces, new ideas, and the spirit of inquiry in faculty and students. Gamma Rho is committed to supporting the student experience whether new in the program, about to graduate, or launching their new career. With any new season, there is a fresh start - a time to set new goals and reflect on the past. For new graduates, please remember that Gamma Rho is here for you! There are opportunities to network with nurses from a variety of setting and across healthcare organizations. We have several board members and chapter members willing to serve as mentors, whether it is assisting with resume writing, interviewing skills, leadership development, or navigating pathways in your career. There are also opportunities to connect with current students to share lessons learned, provide encouragement, and guidance as they prepare to launch their career. Join us in our upcoming activities and chapter initiatives. If there are events you would like to see offered, please let us know. Sue Chase-Cantarini, DNP RN President, STTI Gamma Rho Chapter Page 1 of 5

2 29 year old Lauren Bradley became a member of Sigma Theta Tau in 2014, the same year that she graduated from school with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Since then, she has learned a lot and the transition from student to practicing nurse hasn t always been an easy one but it has been rewarding. Bradley had always been interested in working in the medical field. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a nurse, so it was always part of her life. She considered both as career choices but in the end decided nursing was a better fit; it offered a wide variety of career opportunities and more direct patient care. After nursing school, Bradley was hired on in the Emergency department at St Mark s Hospital in Salt Lake City. Starting at St. Mark s was exciting. She was learning a lot about her new profession and facing new situations every day. She had a great preceptor who gradually let her have more independence. But it was the first weeks of being on her own that were the most stressful. It was in the ER that Bradley realized nursing school had not prepared her for everything. Many of her patients did not have a diagnosis to drive their care, she was still running into situations she had no experience with, and life and death situations were not uncommon. Even assaults weren t uncommon; both verbal and physical. By the end of her first few months of practice, Bradley had been called every name in the book. She also had her first experience with physical assault. A drug seeking patient attacked her with an IV pole after finding out she was not going to get the patient any narcotics. A fellow nurse stepped in to help get the patient off of her but Bradley was still bruised and battered after the attack. It was something she felt she had to come to terms with as being part of the job. Not that it was frequent but, no matter how many safety protocols were in place and no matter how vigilant she was, an assault was always a possibility. Sadly, she says, drug seeking behavior is also a big reality of the job and can sometimes be frustrating to deal with. Another aspect of nursing practice that Bradley says she was not prepared for was prioritizing her time and how difficult can be in critical care settings. She says it frequently feels like she has 5 balls in the air and keeping them going isn t easy. As a new nurse, she felt she did not have the experience she needed to always determine which patients should be the priority. She s not sure any sim-lab or classroom lesson could ever truly prepare new nurses for the realities of the job. But, in her opinion, the stress of starting a new nursing job is softened by the support she gets from her nurse colleagues. They are always willing to help and provide guidance and she knows they always have her back. She also feels as though her nursing education did not end with nursing school. She learns constantly and as a result, continues to grow as a nurse. Through it all, Bradley says, she loves her new job and is grateful that its an environment that supports her development as a new nurse. Page 2 of 5

3 Gamma Rho members support a wide variety of charitable events and organizations. In August, Gamma Rho, along with Solstice Home Health & Hospice, cosponsored The Dementia Dialogues, a one day workshop focusing on patients with Alzheimer s disease or other related dementias. The event featured Dr. Macie P. Smith, LBSW, C-SWCM, SW-G, (3 rd from left), a national expert of the subject of dementia from the Office for the Study of Aging at the University of South Carolina. 5 hour and a half hour-long sessions were included. Each session focused on a different aspect of care for dementia patients: identifying dementia in patients, strategies for communicating with them, keeping them safe, addressing behavioral issues, and problem solving. Approximately 100 individuals attended the one day event and each received 7.5 CEU for participating. The attendees obtained 7.5 CEU and a dementia specialist certificate. In addition, 5 members of the Solstice Home Health and Hospice team became certified Dementia Dialogue trainers in the state of Utah. Nationwide, over 21,000 individuals have participated in at least one of the sessions; over 10,000 have completed all 5. STTI NEWS Did You Know?
