1 Position Description Report Run Date Dec :38AM Position Number: Dept: IET ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY SVCS LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS) PROGRAM Position: MANAGER Approved Payroll Title 0658 Code: Approved Payroll BUS SYS ANL 5 Title: Approved MSP Salary Grade: Approved PSS Salary MSP26 Grade: POSITION DETAILS Job Summary: Under the general oversight of the IET-Academic Technology Services Director, this position is responsible for program management of the UC Davis new enterprise level Learning Management System (LMS), which includes managing the multiple interrelationships created by deploying a campus-wide LMS on a campus as large as UC Davis (35,000 students, almost 3,000 faculty). In particular, this refers to the deployment of the LMS and its interactions with other academic applications systems. Campus Job Scope: Department Specific Job Scope: The learning management system (LMS) for UC Davis serves as the hub or portal to the campus's digital learning environment. Alongside the classroom and lab, the digital learning environment has become a central feature of successful higher education at UC Davis as well as elsewhere. This digital learning portal starts with the LMS, but extends well beyond to include additional instructional technologies, repositories of learning content, and stores of data on learners. The LMS Program Manager serves as the chief architect of this digital learning environment. The LMS Program Manager works with faculty and students, as the principal users of the digital learning environment, to understand their teaching and learning needs as they relate to the digital learning environment. The LMS Program Manager works closely with technologists in other units of ATS, IET, the Libraries, the Educational Effectiveness Hub, Student Affairs, and elsewhere to ensure that the LMS integrates with applications and

2 systems necessary to create and support the digital learning portal. In order to ensure effective client support, the LMS Program Manager works with technical support personnel from IT Express and ATS Faculty Support as well as IT personnel from the various colleges and professional schools. The LMS Program Manager is the principal technical contact with our LMS vendor. The LMS Program Manager also provides vendor contact and support for other, third-party applications included in the digital learning environment. Positions Supervised: Essential Responsibilities: None 20% - LMS STRATEGIC PLANNING AND COMMUNICATION -Ensure communication among the various units and staff members responsible for maintenance and support of the LMS. -Provide the campus community with information about the LMS, including pending changes to be made to the LMS. -Provide outreach faculty, students, and staff. -Represent ATS and IET at campus and external meetings related to LMS and educational technology more generally. -Provide opportunities for various effected campus constituencies to provide input into the direction of and support for the LMS. -Maintain dialogues with colleagues at other institutions and communities, especially other UC campuses, regarding LMS strategies. -Participate in a leadership capacity in planning processes for future planning of the campus LMS strategy. These processes will include various affected campus constituencies including faculty, students, administration, and technical staff. 15% - LMS ARCHITECTURE -Conduct research to maintain expertise and knowledge regarding developments and trends in educational technologies including, but not limited to learning management systems. -Design the UC Davis digital learning environment which integrates the LMS with other teaching and learning applications including, but not limited to, data sources, analytics engines, library databases, content repositories, and third-party tools. 25% LMS TECHNICAL MAINTENANCE & DEVELOPMENT -Provide overall guidance for the technical deployment and development of the LMS, including implementation, integration with campus and third-party systems and tools. -Consult and partners with technical staff within IET and other relevant campus technical staff to ensure the LMS meets campus standards and integrates will campus technologies as needed.

3 -Serve as the primary contact with technical staff at the LMS provider. -Liaise with technical staff at third-party providers to ensure appropriate and secure integration of provider's tools and content with the LMS. -Work with appropriate technical groups to ensure that the LMS meets UC Davis compliance requirements, including in the areas of security, privacy, and accessibility. -Ensure that all changes to the LMS have adequate QA and testing. -Provide project management oversight for LMS related projects and changes. -Oversee development of any locally developed or sourced custom applications to extend the LMS. 15% LMS USER SUPPORT -Convene the LMS Support & Training meetings. -Liaise with the IT Express manager to ensure adequate tier 1 & 2 support for the LMS. -Liaise with the Faculty Support team and technical staff to ensure adequate tier 3 support for the LMS. -Work with the Faculty Support team to provide LMS training to faculty. -Ensure that resources are available as needed for LMS training for students. 15% - PROGRAM OVERSIGHT -Participate in annual budget planning for the LMS. -Maintain costs within the annual budget. -Maintain positive relations with various technical and support staff responsible for the LMS. Physical Demands: Work Environment: 10% - VENDOR RELATIONS -Serve as the principal contact with our LMS vendor for all matters related to technical and maintenance issues. -Works with Purchasing and others, as necessary, on issues related to our contract with the LMS vendor. -Works with other vendors' technical staff or UC Davis technical staff as appropriate to ensure integration and maintenance of third-party technologies with the LMS. Due to the mission-critical services provided by this department, this position may work hours other than M-F 8-5, especially in response to system problems. Must be routinely on-call as required and carry cell phone. Work in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Occasional travel required.

Background Check: QUALIFICATIONS Yes Bachelor's degree. Sophisticated communication skills to interact tactfully and effectively with faculty, management, programmers, staff and others in the conduct of work. Experience managing the work of diverse teams of staff members, including staff who are not direct reports; with the experience to delegate and assign tasks and responsibilities, while providing clear direction and maintaining good communications with appointed supervisors and staff. Minimum Qualifications: Experience working with a wide range of technologies, including learning management systems, digital repositories, online communications and meeting tools, media creation, production and delivery online publishing, databases. Experience to deliver coherent/effective presentations on complex academic technologies to a wide range of audiences. Experience teaching and training faculty and staff in the use of technology. Experience to understand the technology needs of faculty and students. Comprehension and zeal for the potential of technology in an academic context (teaching and research). Preferred Qualifications for Selection: -Master's or doctorate degree. -Teaching experience in a higher education setting.
