2 Library Services LIBRARY SERVICES Membership All enrolled students are automatically members of the Library therefore you do not need to do anything to join the P number on your student card is your Library number. You will be ed a Library PIN for renewing loans and making reservations. You can use any Library on any site, although some of the books might be course specific (for example the Paragon House Library holds mostly books for health and psychology subjects). Remember successful Library users tend to become successful students this includes making good use of electronic resources which are accessible 24/7 online and on the move. Library staff will help you get to know how to get the best out of everything we provide. Library website Much of what you need to know about using the Library can be found on the Library website uwl.ac.uk/library We recommend that you get into the habit of using this website regularly, as this will be important when it s time for you to prepare your assignments. 3 Library Services Where are the UWL Libraries? Ealing Site Library Villiers House The Ealing site Library can be found at Villiers House, which is located above Ealing Broadway Station the entrance is next door to the station. How do I get there? 4 Library Services LIBRARY SERVICES Paragon House Brentford site The Brentford site Library can be found on the second floor of Paragon House, and mainly serves the Schools based there (College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare and the School of Psychology, Social Work and Human Sciences limited resources are available for The Business School). How do I get there? The UWL shuttlebus stops directly outside the Brentford site. Fountain House Berkshire Institute of Health The Berkshire Institute of Health Library can be found on the tenth floor of Fountain House. There are limited physical Library resources here. However, a core text library is being introduced in stages and the first selection of reference titles is now available. There are computers for access to electronic resources and information, as well as support for using these. Books on loan from either Ealing or Brentford Libraries may be ordered (by reservation request via the catalogue), issued or returned at the Berkshire Institute of Health. What s in the Library? Access to a huge range of electronic resources for free Books - including languages and study skills Journals - printed and electronic Audio-visual: DVDs and CDs Networked computers and laptop spaces (for Wi-Fi) A range of study spaces for different types of study Printers and photocopiers Help and advice. How to borrow, return and reserve a book Use your Library card to self-issue books you want to borrow most students are allowed to borrow 10 items at any time and books are usually issued for one or three weeks. You can reserve books from any site either online or in person in the Library and these can also be collected from a different site if required. Book can be returned at any site via self-service machines, or you can drop them into the book bin at St Mary s Road. Remember! Students in the Aspire scheme should use their Aspire card to purchase core texts as the Library won t necessarily have enough copies for everyone at the time you need them. 4

7 Library Services What can an Academic Support Librarian do for me? Your Librarian can help you to trace, access and use the most relevant academic resources for your course, using a balance of print, online and audio-visual materials. They can provide information literacy and skills training (eg. in using online databases, in researching or referencing resources for your project or dissertation), for groups or individuals, by arrangement with tutors or by appointment with individual students. Your Librarian can also advise you on matters such as avoiding plagiarism and copyright issues. 8 IT Services IT Services offer a wide range of applications, technology and services to help support you while at UWL. There are over 1100 PCs and over 200 Apple Macs available for you to use. Each provides access to the Internet, , and a whole suite of applications from Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite to specialist teaching applications. Some computers are installed with specialist applications and technology, aligned with particular courses. For example, there are Apple Macs fitted with musical keyboards, and film editing packages. Statistical analysis packages are also available. IT SERVICES Student portal The University provides you with access to a range of IT services, including your Student Account. These services can all be accessed via the Student Portal. The Student Portal is a single place for you to find and access nearly all the online services and information sources you may need. Simply visit: portal.uwl.ac.uk 8

9 IT Services Within the Student Portal you will find the following web-based services under the My UWL link: My Site My Site is your personal web space where you can collaborate with our students and staff just like Facebook and other social media sites. Create your own personal page and post messages and comments on your classmates pages. My Personal Details This section holds all your personal details such as your-term time address, your home address and other contact details. My Blackboard My Blackboard is the software used for the University s virtual learning environment. You will be added automatically to each course and module on which you are enrolled. Lecturers and teaching staff make use of this site to upload key course and module information including lecture hand-outs, presentations, reading lists, links to online learning resources and assessment criteria. On many modules you will be required to submit your coursework via Blackboard. Blackboard can also be used as a communication channel between staff and students. My My provides quick access to your student account, which comes with 50 Gigabytes of space. The University will also send important communication to your Student Account and it is very important that you check this on a regular basis. My Timetable My Timetable will give you all the information relating to class timetables, such as location and times. My School My School gives you access to all the useful contacts for your School, including information and contact details for your student representatives. My Connections My Connections is the place to go for module, course and general community discussions. My Modules My Modules is where you will find all the information regarding the modules that you are studying. My Marks My Marks is where you will find all the marks related to your studies. My Content My Content is where you can upload, store and share documents and files. My Noticeboard My Noticeboard is where you will find useful notices related to your study and any important information that you need to know. 9 IT SERVICES

10 IT Services My Pebblepad My PebblePad is a Personal Learning System which is used, to help you reflect on the way you learn; to keep a record of, and comment on, what you have learned; and to prepare towards your future employment. With My PebblePad, you will be able to build your own electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) of achievements. You can share documents, images, videos, and sound files with tutors, other students, and with employers or others outside the University. My Attendance My Attendance is where you will be able to keep track of your own attendance at lectures and seminars. You should check regularly to make sure that your attendance is correctly registered. Remember: you will need to swipe you Student ID card in every lecture theatre and classroom. Card readers will be found near the entrance. If you are not sure where to swipe, look for the pink arrow. To access the Student Portal simply visit IT SERVICES Please remember to transfer any important documents or s at the end of each semester to your own personal PC, laptop or portable media; also remember to clear out any items that are unnecessary on a regular basis. 10

11 IT Services How to login to the Student Portal You should log on to the Student Portal using your student ID number as your username. The first time you log on, your temporary password is your date of birth in the format DDmmmYY For example, if your birthday is the 3 September 1993, this will mean your password will be 03sep93 (please note the month is all lowercase). Once you have logged on, you should follow the instructions under Password Self-service to choose your own password, and to register your details so that you will be able to reset your password in the future (for example, in case you forget it). Getting started To access the various IT services and resources at UWL, including the campus PCs, the wireless network, and most online services, you will need a valid IT User Account. How do I get my IT user account? When you first enrolled to the University you were sent a welcome called Using IT services at UWL which contains important information about logging on to IT facilities provided by the University. If you have not received this then simply contact the IT Service Desk by internal telephone (2222), by external telephone ( ), or by (itservicedesk@uwl. ac.uk). IT SERVICES 11

12 IT Services Accessing your To connect to your student , use a web browser to go to .uwl.ac.uk. Enter your Student ID number and your password. This means that, once you have set-up your login details, you can access your from any computer connected to the Internet, either within or outside the University. Student computers on campus The University provides computers for use by students, staff and authorised visitors with an IT account. Some schools/ departments also offer PCs, and Macs, for use by their students only. PC rooms and open access areas are located across all University libraries and some teaching areas. Log on with your username and password - don t forget to log off when finished so that the PC is available for other users. IT SERVICES PC s found unattended for more than 20 minutes will be logged off (and unsaved work will be lost). Unattended personal items may also be removed for security purposes. 12

13 IT Services Assistive technology Your University has provided assistive technology exlusively for those with particular needs. The University of West London has exclusive facilities for assistive technology registered students at each campus. Dedicated workstations can be found in locations that are carefully chosen for ease of mobility access and proximity to library or other learning resources. The locations of the Assistive Technology Software facilities are as follows: Ealing Site - St Mary s Road, A Block on the 2nd Floor (A2): Here you will find dedicated workstations in the open access area which provides a quiet environment on a first-come first-served basis. This resource includes computers that incorporate large-screen computers, scanners, black-and white and colour printing and specialist software packages. The adaptable software that the University of West London has includes: Mind Genius, Inspirations, and Text HELP! Text Bridge, Kurzweil 3000, Via Voice for Macs and Dragon Naturally Speaking and JAWS. Ealing Broadway Site - Villiers House Library (1st floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor and 5th floor): Here you will find approximately 155 workstations throughout the library, black-and white and colour printing, and scanning facilities. The following assistive technology software can be found on these machines (Mind Genius and Read and Write). Brentford Site Paragon House Library 2nd Floor: Here you will find approximately 85 workstations throughout the library, black-and white and colour printing, and scanning facilities. The following assistive technology software can be found on these machines (Mind Genius and Read and Write). Reading Site Berkshire Hub Here you will find approximately 50 workstations throughout the library, blackand white and colour printing, and scanning facilities. The following assistive technology software can be found on these machines (Mind Genius and Read and Write). Note: Although our assistive technology software is available to all students on campus. JAWS software may be useful to have on your personal device (eg your laptop or computer) as it will be able to assist in reading out documents, changing of fonts and backgrounds to make documents easier to view and read. 14 IT Services IT SERVICES Printing and scanning Student PCs are configured to allow you to print in black by default. To print in colour you will need to select a colour printer. Charges for printing are 5p per black and white single sided sheet of A4 and 30p for colour single sided sheet of A4. Other sizes and formats are available on request. Please note you will need to top-up your UWL student card with credits and present your card at the printer to release print jobs. Further information on printing and using your student card can be found on our website: it.uwl.ac.uk Free scanning facilities are available at these locations: St Mary s Road Second floor There are multi-functional Xerox devices (MFDs) available on floor A2 accessed through the Hospitality Block (H Block) second floor corridor. Villiers House (Ealing Broadway) First floor There are three multi-functional Xerox devices (MFD) which include scanning and photocopying. From entrance turn right. There are two flat bed scanners inside the computer room. From entrance turn left. Second floor There is one MFD in the open learning area Third floor There is one MFD in the quiet learning area Fourth floor There is one MFD in the quiet learning area Binding Located on the second floor of Villiers House there is a range of self-service comb binding facilities and a heavy duty guillotine. To access the binding area from the second floor turn left from the entrance by the lifts. 14

15 IT Services Wireless access A high-speed wireless network is provided at many locations throughout the campus. You can log in to Eduroam using your IT User Account details from your laptop, tablet or Smartphone. Details on how to set up your device can be found here: it.uwl.ac.uk/eduroam How to connect to Wi-Fi 1. View available wireless networks on your Wi-Fi enabled device. 2. Select Eduroam. 3. Enter your username: <Student id>@student.uwl.ac.uk This is the same format as your address e.g @student.uwl.ac.uk 4. Enter your Password, this is the usual password that you use to connect to your Student portal, and PCs. Note: Android device: Select MSCHAPV from list to progress. IT SERVICES You can also use Eduroam to access the Internet at some other universities. To find out how to connect to Eduroam and where you can use it see it.uwl.ac.uk/eduroam Apple device: Click on Accept button for certificate to progress. How can I get further help in setting up Eduroam Wi-Fi on my device? Visit our Eduroam website at: it.uwl.ac.uk/eduroam 15

16 IT Services Software Student PCs run Windows 7 with current version of Microsoft Office suite and are pre-installed with commonly-used central software, which can be found under Start > All Programs Popular applications include Adobe CS6 Creative Suite Master Collection, Microsoft Office 2010 and a choice of web browser such as Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. IT SERVICES Specialised software relevant to your course may also be available on dedicated machines. Please contact the IT Service Desk for more information. Getting help You can contact the IT Service Desk 24/7 365 days by telephone (internal phone extn.2222, from an external phone or mobile: ), by (itservicedesk@uwl.ac.uk) or via Twitter 16

17 MyRegistry website for students MyRegistry uwl.ac.uk/myregistry MyRegistry is a web service for all University of West London students which shows your student record, including your personal details and assessment marks. You will need to login to MyRegistry to keep your personal details and your contact details (addresses and mobile telephone numbers) up to date. You will also use the MyRegistry website when you come to reenrol for the next year of your course, you will be reminded of this at the start of each academic year. You will already have a MyRegistry Account to access. Enter your Student ID Number (eight digit number found on UWL student ID card)and your MyRegistry Password in the log in box. Select the option Yes, I have a MyRegistry account. Click on the Login button. If you cannot remember your password please click Have you forgotten your MyRegistry password? and enter your UWL Student ID number. A new password will be ed to you. You should copy and paste this into the password box. Updating Your Details You will need to login to the MyRegistry website. It is important that you keep your contact details (addresses and mobile telephone numbers) up to date as the University will need to write to you, and may send a text message to your mobile telephone. The MyRegistry website enables you to keep the following personal details up to date: Contact Details Address during study (term-time address) and telephone number Permanent home address and telephone number Emergency contact address and telephone number Mobile telephone number Your Address during Study is where you are living while you are studying. The University will contact you at the telephone number or your address during study if we are unable to contact you on your mobile telephone (or if you do not own a mobile telephone). Your Permanent Home Address is what you consider to be your home address and this may be the same as your Address During Study. Your Permanent Home Address might also be the address of your parental home. This address might also be your Emergency Contact Address. MY REGISTRY 17

18 MyRegistry website for students MY REGISTRY Your Mobile Telephone Number is what we would use for immediately trying to contact you in case of emergency. The University may also from time to time send a text message to your mobile telephone number. The University contacts you on many occasions throughout your course, both while you are studying and during the holidays, and once you have completed your studies, regarding graduation. It is essential and beneficial to you to keep the University up to date with any changes to your addresses and telephone numbers at all times. Your Personal Details The MyRegistry website will allow you to request a change to your First Name or your Family Name. Please note that a change of First Name should only be made where the information we have is different to that on your Passport, Birth Certificate or Visa. If you request to change your Family Name then you will need to provide documentary evidence and take that evidence to your School Office. For information on which documentary evidence is required please consult your School Office. If you are unsure as to whether you should make a change to your First Name or request a change to your Family Name then seek advice from your School Office before making any changes. Changes to your First Name will appear on any Certificate awarded by the University of West London. Your studies The MyRegistry website will also enable you to view information about your studies: eg your modules and assessments. You will also be able to register for your graduation when you complete your studies.
