3 presenter profiles WORKSHOP 1 / PARALLEL SESSION 1 Presenter Profiles Professor Warwick Anderson Warwick Anderson is the Chief Executive Officer of NHMRC, Australia s major governmental funding body for health and medical research. Previously, he was Head of School of Biomedical Sciences at Monash University and Deputy Director of the Baker Medical Research Institute, following research fellowships at the University of Sydney and Harvard Medical School. Professor Anderson obtained his PhD from the University of Adelaide. His research has focused on renal causes of hypertension, including the roles of renal vascular remodeling, renal innervation and the renin-angiotensin system. He has published over 170 peer review articles. Professor Anderson is a member of the Prime Minister s Science Engineering and Innovation Council, a Board member of the Global Alliance for Chronic Disease, a member of Heads of International (Biomedical) Research Organizations and of the National Lead Clinicians Group. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and an International Fellow of the American Heart Foundation. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in Mr Doron Ben-Meir Mr Ben-Meir has extensive experience in the venture capital industry and commercialisation more generally. Over the past twenty four years he has been involved in numerous venture capital organisations; has been a founder or cofounder of six start-up companies; as well as an investor, investment manager, and advisor to several other companies. He has an intimate understanding of the practical challenges companies face, and of what is required to be successful. Through his investment and advisory work, he has been involved in identifying and assisting innovative companies to commercialise their intellectual property and transition through various stages of business development. In April 2010 he was appointed by the Australian Government as the CEO of Commercialisation Australia and, from 1 July 2014, was appointed Director of the Entrepreneurs Infrastructure Programme. This $484.2 million Programme was launched in July 2014 and provides advice, assistance and tailored support to small and medium businesses to improve business capability and competitiveness. Mr Ben-Meir s qualifications include a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (Hons) from Monash University, Melbourne. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. 3
4 presenter profiles Ms Topaz Conway Topaz has over 20 years experience working with early-stage companies across a number of industries, including starting and selling three companies herself. Having worked in hi-tech, biotech, and even the wine industry, her key recent focus has been in the biotech arena, guiding companies through investment, development, FDA, manufacturing, product launch and exit, in the US and Australian markets. From earlier years in the bio-medical space at the Garvan Institute, through to her recent Deputy Director role at the Mater Medical Research Institute, Topaz has worked on multiple sides of research, development, and commercialisation including CEO of Cytopeia, USA, and being an angel investor herself. Strategy, funding and partnerships are her strengths and her company, Biothoughts, is dedicated to these services. Topaz is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and currently sits on the Boards of PafTec International and Springboard Enterprises Australia. Dr Alan Finkel Dr Alan Finkel AO FTSE is Chancellor of Monash University and President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He is co-founder and Chairman of Cosmos Magazine, the chairman of the Australian Centre of Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics and the Executive Chairman of Stile Education. Alan was awarded his PhD in electrical engineering from Monash University and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in neuroscience at the Australian National University. In 1983 he founded Axon Instruments, a California-based company that made precision scientific instruments used at pharmaceutical companies and universities for the discovery of new medicines. Subsequent to Axon being acquired, since 2006 Alan has enjoyed a varied business career that includes property development and a period in electric vehicle charge network provision. Alan is passionate about educating the next generation. He established the Australian Course in Advanced Neuroscience to provide advanced training to early-career scientists and he leads a secondary school science program named STELR that is currently running in nearly 400 secondary schools around Australia. 4
5 presenter profiles Dr Stuart Hazell Stuart has more than 35 years experience in life sciences, with over 110 scientific papers, and has held senior management roles in the public and private sectors. Stuart was Vice President, Research and Development for Panbio Ltd from He reorganised the company s research and development activities, leading a number of significant improvements in the operational areas of Panbio, eventually being promoted to Chief Executive Officer. Currently the Managing Director of Fusidium Pty Ltd, he is engaged in consulting activities, including interim CEO roles, strategic planning and business development within the life sciences sector. A Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, he sits on the Board of Research Australia Ltd, is Chair of the Advisory Board of Rapid Detection Pty Ltd, and State Chair of the Queensland Branch of AusBiotech. Stuart is actively involved in the biomedical community as Chair of the Biotechnology and Medical Device Industry Forum. Dr Elane Zelcer Elane is an experienced and effective business leader in the life sciences sector. She provides strategic advisory and commercialisation consulting services to companies and universities, including those needing change or start-up strategies that involve significant risk management due to limited funding and uncertainty about future opportunities. She has held senior executive roles in start-up and multinational companies and universities, and board and advisory roles in the private sector, with universities, CRCs and State and Federal government committees. She continues to grow her extensive technical, commercial and capital raising networks in Australia and overseas. Elane has a Bachelor of Science (Hons), PhD, and Graduate Diploma of Business (Marketing) from Monash University, and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. 5
6 panellist profiles Panellist Profiles Ms Judy Develin, Office Head, Change and Program Management, Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Ms Develin has held a number of leadership roles in the TGA and is an active champion of programs of change that result in improvement in business interactions for the regulated community. Presently the Australian Government s deregulation and competitiveness agendas are driving the work priorities for Judy. Prior to this role Ms Develin has held a significant number of senior positions in the Australian Public Service covering diverse roles and responsibilities, including regulation, corporate functions, policy development and service delivery. Dr Joshua Funder, Partner, GBS Venture Partners Dr Joshua Funder joined GBS in 2004 and has more than 17 years experience in biotechnology research, management and venture investing. Before joining GBS Joshua worked in corporate strategy and development at Infinity Pharmaceuticals in Boston and the Boston Consulting Group in San Francisco. In addition he worked with the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative to successfully negotiate reduced prices for anti-retrovirals and initiate pharmaceutical supplies across eastern and southern Africa. Joshua has experience as founder, director and chairman of biotechnology companies in Australia and the US and brings extensive experience of international venture syndication. He served as interim CEO of Proacta Inc following GBS investment and is on the board of directors of GBS portfolio companies Celladon Corporation (NASDAQ:CLDN), Spinifex Pharmaceuticals Inc, Neurovance Inc, Euthymics Inc and Elastagen Pty Ltd. Joshua was director of GBS investee company Peplin Inc (ASX:PLI) which won the AVCAL award for the best early stage investment in Joshua earned his Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees at Melbourne University and his Master of Laws degree at the London School of Economics. He holds a D.Phil in intellectual property for biotechnology from Oxford University where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. 6
7 panellist profiles Prof David Haylock, Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Science Leader and Cell Biology Group Leader, CSIRO Prof David Haylock is an Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Science Leader and holder of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship. He has extensive knowledge and expertise in the biology of human haemopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Prof Haylock was part of the team that pioneered autologous transplantation with mobilised blood progenitor cells, a technique that has since revolutionised bone marrow transplantation. In his current role at CSIRO, he leads work on the development of bioreactor technology for blood cell growth and also collaborates with scientists on new polymer materials for growing stem cells. His combined knowledge and experience in basic stem cell biology along with his background in applied and translational research are a rare combination in this field. Dr Ingmar Wahlqvist, Investment Manager, Brandon Capital Partners Ingmar joined Brandon Capital Partners as an Investment Manager in Immediately prior to this, he worked as a Business Development Manager at Melbourne Ventures, commercialising technology from the University of Melbourne, a position which included a part-time secondment to GBS Venture Partners, a life-science venture capital group. Before that, Ingmar spent five years working in the global commercial operations of sanofi-aventis in Paris, France, including a number of years in the cardiovascular franchise of global marketing, and in particular on Plavix, which during this time grew to be the second best-selling drug worldwide. Ingmar has also worked with a small number of early-stage companies in the health sector, and as a management consultant with The Boston Consulting Group, advising clients in a range of industries including financial services, airlines and manufacturing. He spent some years working in clinical medicine, largely in critical care (emergency, intensive care, anaesthetics) within major teaching hospitals. Ingmar is a Director of Protego Medical Inc. and an Alternative Director for PolyActiva P/L, and is a past Director of Med-e-Serv P/L. Ingmar earned his medical degree (MB BS) from Monash University, and his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Melbourne Business School, where he graduated with an Award of Distinction. He is a registered medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia, a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a member of AusBiotech. 7
