1 Biographies The following provides detailed biographical information about the new Clean Technology Innovation Committee members. Dr Susan Pond AM (Chair) New South Wales. Adjunct Professor in Sustainability, United s Study Centre, University of Sydney. Doctor of Science Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (Hons 1). Dr Susan Pond AM is currently a Member of the Commercialisation Australia Board. In 2010, Dr Pond was appointed to the Dow Sustainability Program in the United s Study Centre. The Program brings together academic and policy experts from Australia and the US to develop action-oriented solutions to a range of sustainability challenges concerning energy, water, food and biodiversity that are technologically innovative, commercially scalable and politically viable. Dr Pond s area of interest is the development of the advanced transportation biofuels industry, including the critical success factors required for commercially viable production at scale. Dr Pond is also a Director of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Vice-President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and a Board member of the Centenary Institute and Biotron Ltd. 2 Previously, Dr Pond was a senior executive with Johnson & Johnson, serving for 12 years as Director and Managing Director of its Sydney-based biotechnology company, Johnson & Johnson Research Pty Limited. From , she was Director and, from 2007, Chairman of AusBiotech Limited. Before joining Johnson & Johnson, Dr Pond held senior Professorial positions at the University of California San Francisco and then the University of Queensland. She has served on a number of Australian Government Advisory Boards, including as Chairperson of the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee. Dr Pond was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in 1994 and awarded a Welcome Australia Medal in 1994 and a Centenary Medal in She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Sydney, a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of New South Wales and a Doctor of Science degree and Doctor of Medicine honoris causa from the University of Queensland. 3 Ms Anne-Marie Birkill (Member) Queensland. General Partner OneVentures Innovation Fund. BSc (Hons), MBA, FAIM MAICD. Ms Anne-Marie Birkill is a General Partner of OneVentures Innovation Fund, member of its Investment Committee, and Chair of the Risk Management Committee based in Brisbane, which is a strong source of early-stage technology innovation opportunities. Ms Birkill has forged a career in the field of technology commercialisation. She has worked with hundreds of early-stage technology companies as senior executive, mentor and business coach. Prior to joining the OneVentures team, she was CEO of i.lab Incubator Pty Ltd (2006 Australian Incubator of the Year and launch pad for many successful Queensland technology companies including Liquid Animation, Mooter Media (ASX: MMZ), Codesion, Ephox, RedFlow Limited (ASX:RFX) and Charm Health), President of the Women in Technology group; and spent five years in the senior management team at UniQuest (The University of Queensland s award winning commercialisation company). Her interest in technology commercialisation was forged during 15 years in leadership roles in agribusiness companies developing and commercialising new cultivars of ornamental, aquatic, food and forestry plants. She has been a significant equity partner in both a plant breeding/propagation company and a boutique technology commercialisation firm. Ms Birkill is lead manager and Director for OneVentures portfolio companies Peak3 and Paloma Mobile, and was a Director for energy storage company August 2012 Page 3 of 13
4 RedFlow Limited (ASX: RFX) for two years including through the process of successfully listing the company on the ASX. An active member of the innovation community, she is an Industry Fellow with The University of Queensland (UQ) Business School, judge for the Tropical Innovation Awards and a member of a number of government and university advisory groups. She regularly contributes as a speaker at innovation industry events and as a mentor particularly for other women working in the technology industries. Her qualifications include a BSc(Hons) from Flinders University and an MBA from The University of Queensland. She is a FAIM and a MAICD. August 2012 Page 4 of 13
5 Mr Adrian Chegwidden (Member) Western Australia. Retired. Cert/Dip (Anal Chem), BSc (App Sci), MSc (Env Sci) FAIE, FAICD. Mr Adrian Chegwidden has had an extensive career spanning more than 40 years working in the fields of environmental and sustainable energy up until In 1994 Mr Chegwidden joined Western Power Corporation, initially as the Manager of the Western Power Environment Branch that became the Energy Technology and Environment Branch. Its role combined the disciplines of renewable energy technology development, demand management and energy efficiency with environmental management and energy and environmental education. In mid 1999 Mr Chegwidden became Manager of the Sustainable Energy Branch to formulate the Western Power response to the enhanced greenhouse effect. In a structural reorganisation of Western Power in January 2001, Mr Chegwidden was re-appointed to manage a revamped Sustainable Energy Branch focused solely on renewable energy project development for Verve Energy. In November 2009, Mr Chegwidden left Verve Energy to work with Advanced Energy Resources where the objective was to identify and develop commercial sustainable energy projects. In his time at Western Power and Verve Energy he oversaw the installation of many commercial and research-focused renewable energy projects in Western Australia. Mr Chegwidden was a member of Innovation Australia s former Climate Ready Committee and has served on the Government s Renewable Energy Development Initiatives grants committee and the Greenhouse Office August 2012 Page 5 of 13
6 Reference Group for Advanced Electricity Storage Technologies. He was a Member of the Engineers Australia s National Committee on Fuels & Energy, the Western Australian Sustainable Energy Association and the Advisory Council of Engineers without Borders. Mr Chegwidden is a Fellow of both the Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Institute of Energy. August 2012 Page 6 of 13
7 Mr Peter Janssen (Member) New South Wales. Director, J Capital Pty Ltd, Director, Dosimetry and Imaging Pty Ltd. BEc, LLB, MBA (IMD Switzerland), FAICD, FAIM. Mr Peter Janssen is currently a Director of J. Capital Pty Ltd. He has spent most of his career building an Australian-based international manufacturing company. Most recently, Mr Janssen has been spending more time in the venture capital space. His current appointments include: Director for Dosimetry and Imaging Pty Ltd, member of the Investment Committee of Nanyang Innovation Fund, and member of the Investment Committee for ANU Connect Ventures. He is an active participant in Sydney Angels. Mr Janssen is Chairman of the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife and a current member of Innovation Australia s Innovation Grants Committee. Past appointments include President of AEEMA (Australian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers Association), President of the Australian Business Foundation, Vice President of FAPM (Federation of Automotive Products Manufacturers) and a seat on a diversity of company boards. Mr Janssen graduated with Economics and Law degrees from Sydney University, prior to completing an MBA at IMD in Switzerland. August 2012 Page 7 of 13
8 Mr John O'Brien (Member) South Australia. Managing Director Australian Clean Tech. BA (Hons) Engineering, MSc, MBA, GAICD, CPEng MIE Aust. Mr John O Brien is the founder and Managing Director of Australian CleanTech. Australian CleanTech assists cleantech companies to grow, investors to understand the sector and governments to facilitate industry growth. Mr O Brien facilitates the Australian CleanTech Network and publishes both the Australian CleanTech Index and the annual Australian Cleantech Review. He lectures in Leadership and Entrepreneurship at the University of Adelaide, is a member of the SA Premier s Climate Change Council and is a board member of a number of companies including a world-leading polypropylene recycling company based in China and listed on the ASX. In 2009, he published a collection of essays titled Opportunities Beyond Carbon (MUP), which seeks to refocus the climate debate towards the many opportunities which sustainability presents. Mr O Brien now also facilitates technology and investment transfer projects with China and Korea. As part of this work he publishes the China CleanTech index and is a regular columnist for one of China's leading finance journals. Mr O Brien has previously worked for Origin Energy on growth, strategy and M&A projects in addition to being the founding secretary of the company's Operational Risk Committee. Prior to joining the Australian energy industry, John held teaching, oil and gas and consulting engineering roles in the UK, Canada and the Middle East. August 2012 Page 8 of 13

10 Dr Jane Sargison (Member) Tasmania. Director JSA Consulting Engineers. BE (1 st class Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, DPhil (Oxon), FIE Aust, MAICD MAIE. Dr Jane Sargison is a Rhodes Scholar and Mechanical Engineer with a background in energy industry research and development. She was awarded Tasmanian and National Professional Engineer of the Year for 2011 by Engineers Australia, in recognition of her contribution to the profession as a consulting engineer and senior academic. Dr Sargison s career includes Australian Research Council and industry funded research and consulting projects for Rolls Royce (gas turbines), Hydro Tasmania, biomass power systems, alternative and conventional fuels for transport and stationary generation. Dr Sargison is Executive Director, RBE Pty Ltd, a technology start up company, developing straw to energy power stations with carbon sequestration via biochar, across the West Australian Wheatbelt. Dr Sargison is also a Director on the boards of ARENA, Southern Water, the Australian Institute of Energy and National Mechanical College of Engineers Australia. She is a Director of her business, JSA Consulting Engineers. She is widely published with over 50 technical papers and is a reviewer for a number of key technical journals and is an invited speaker on subjects from emerging technology to her experiences in the engineering profession. 11 Dr Sargison holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford and a BE (First Class Hons) in Mechanical Engineering. In addition to being a Rhodes Scholar, Dr Sargison is also a Tasmanian University Medallist. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. 12 Ms Fiona Waterhouse (Member) Queensland. Principal, Sustainable Venture Partners. B.Mfg.Management, Dip.Env Studies, Cert. Business GAICD. A prominent figure in the Australian Cleantech market, Ms Fiona Waterhouse assists entrepreneurs to demonstrate and commercialise clean technologies through practical business development, management and capital raising solutions. She has over 18 years experience as an entrepreneur and business development advisor. Ms Waterhouse is currently CEO of Utilitas, a specialist bioenergy project development company which she founded and seed funded. Utilitas is developing a portfolio of bioenergy projects and has established Australia s first private Biomethane Potential Testing facility to inform plant design and operational requirements. Ms Waterhouse also seed funded and lead the development of the BioBowser, which converts small organic waste streams into energy, recycled water and nutrient. Ms Waterhouse is on the board of EcoFund Queensland Pty Ltd, one of the largest providers of carbon and environmental offsets in the Australian market. In 2007, Ms Waterhouse worked with capital market group Financial and Energy Exchange (FEX) to establish the carbon and environmental product developer EnVex. Ms Waterhouse s early work in the Cleantech space was shaped as a consultant production engineer helping mining and manufacturing companies identify and implement productivity improvements. Ms Waterhouse was a Director in the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency between 2000 and 2003 and continues to provide advice to various government agencies on sustainable industry development. 13 She is an Industry Fellow within the Australian Centre for Sustainable Business and Development at the University of Southern Queensland. Her academic background spans business, manufacturing, environmental and public sector management. Ms Waterhouse is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, holds a Bachelor of Manufacturing Management from the University of Technology Sydney, a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies from Macquarie University and a Graduate Diploma in Business from the Queensland University of Technology.
