1 REPORTER June 9, 2015 ROTARY SOCCER SHOWCASE Recreation. Today, we had the distinct pleasure to hear from our own Charlotte Rotary Club member Chase Saunders to make us aware of how our club is getting involved with the newly created Charlotte Region Soccer Initiative. The Charlotte Rotary Executive Board has approved the creation of a Rotary Soccer Committee to support this initiative alongside the Charlotte Chamber, City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Parks & Why Soccer: It is the world s most popular sport with over 2 billion people participating/fans, hundreds of teams and tens of thousands play and Charlotte is an international city having 154 nations represented. The Mission: All communities in the 60 mile radius Charlotte Region embrace the power of soccer through supporting the healthy benefits of soccer, support plans to bring BIG soccer to Charlotte, support the County to build facilities, support the Charlotte Independence soccer team and support the international business opportunities it can create. How: Create a central website listing game schedules, training opportunities and platform for soccer groups; promote international soccer tournaments, marketing material, promote Rotary USA soccer balls/pins and our Rotary district support of soccer initiatives. We heard from Lucia Griffith, CEO of Metro Landworks and Chair of the Chambers Soccer Task Force. Lucia is from Peru and feels that soccer will help make Charlotte more relevant and inviting to international businesses. Past Rotary President and Deputy City Manager Ron Kimble made us aware that with the recent City financial support for the BofA Stadium, for the next 10 years there are 5 rent-free days annually that the City may use the facility. The stadium and its grass field are a real attractive venue for international professional soccer. These rent-free days include the Belk Bowl and last year s MLS match between Liverpool and AC Milan, which drew 69,400 ticket holders and had a $16mm economic impact. July 15 th there will be a double hitter soccer match and another one on the 25 th. Eleven days of soccer mania will be a huge impact to the City. A recent trip by the Charlotte Soccer Committee to Barcelona had them meet with their football team about playing in Charlotte with the hope of attracting 2 of the highest level international soccer matches each year. Brokering this type of event could attract a huge amount of international business interest.
2 We heard from Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation President Jim Garges about his organizations completion of the 1 st phase of the $32mm Sportsplex in Matthews and plans for the 2 nd phase to open in mid He spoke of having the opening with Rotary partnering with the County to have a blowout family fun weekend of soccer! Memorial Stadium is getting a renovation to make it soccer friendly and could be the perfect home to professional soccer in Charlotte. Jim McPhilliamy moved to Charlotte from NYC 13 years ago and told his wealth advisor he wanted to own a professional sports team. When the advisor told him that was a poor plan, it just made Jim more determined. Today he owns the Major League Lacrosse Charlotte Hounds and the Charlotte Independence of the United Soccer League. This is a high level of soccer that we need to support. They are currently playing nomadic at UNCC, Winthrop and soon home will be Ramblewood Park soccer complex. Jims goal is to do well at the lower level and prove to Major League Soccer they need a team in Charlotte. Chase closed the program by asking club members to get involved if this is a passion for them, to commit to help the committee create a legacy to help the less served/international community and to make Charlotte a COOL and friendly Soccer Mom town one ball at a time! Speaker Write Up: George MacBain Head Table: Jim Garges, Ron Kimble, Natalie English, Chase Saunders, Lucia Griffith, Jim McPhilliamy, Tom Smith; Invocation: Floyd Davis; Visitors & Guests: Ed Pickett; Song: Colleen Brannan; Health, History & Happiness: Matt Joyner; AV: Jessica Dupree & Nikki Keith; Photos: Bert Voswinkel Club News Mary Vickers-Koch introduced Joan Wright as the club s newest Rotarian. Joan was a six-year member of Charlotte South Rotary and is married to Charlotte Rotarian, Tom Wright. She is the owner of O Sullivan Wright, Inc., specializing in executive coaching and leadership development and can be reached at joan@osullivanwright.com. Everyone is invited to the (free) District Assembly, 4:30 6:00 on Saturday, June 27 th. The event will be held at Historic Langtree Plantation in Mooresville. And for $20 per person, you are invited to the installation reception and dinner for our District Governor Ineke Wilson. Reception from 6PM-7PM; dinner and installation from 7PM- 9PM. STILL.a number one priority in the club is to identify HOST FAMILIES for Anna (Germany; Charlotte Latin) and Radim (Czech Republic; Myers Park). Contact Ed Wadsworth (ed@wadsworthgroup.net) if you can help with this situation. The NC Association of Staffing Professionals has named DecisionPathHR (Tom Gibson) the #1 fastest growing recruiting and staffing company in NC; Classroom Central (Jill Dineen) is launching the first-ever (2 day) Crowdfunding campaign to raise $29,000 by June 19. Funds will be used for the June Re-Stock in order to prepare for the August Back to School rush. POSTED FOR MEMBERSHIP (comments to Rotary Office by 6/16/15) James E.
