Early Beginnings Academy Benefits From Music Therapy Each morning, when the teachers at Early Beginnings Academy-Hialeah (EBA-Hialeah) work with their students to form a semi-circle, the students know that it is time for Sevrina to visit. UCP of Miami provides music therapy services for both the adults and children in their programs throughout the week. At EBA-Hialeah, music therapist Sevrina visits each of the four classrooms three times a week to work with the children on their gross motor functioning, socialization, and cognitive and academic skills. Each music therapy session begins with the children going around in the semi-circle and shaking hands with each other to the music therapist's "Hello" song. While working with many different instruments, the children are also learning how to share with one another. With all three Early Beginnings Academies providing services to both children with and without disabilities, all the children in UCP of Miami's EBA programs benefit from music therapy. Banco Popular Grants Hope Center $9,000 On February 3, 2011, Molly Hime and her team at Banco Popular presented Hope Center with a $9,000 check from the Banco Popular Foundation, Inc. Through support from Banco Popular's employees,
3 the foundation was able to select three organizations to contribute to. Hope Center was selected as one of the three grant recipients by the foundation. A group of employees at Banco Popular have been huge supporters of Hope Center through Make a Difference Day. The employees have put together a number of activities for the Hope Center participants to enjoy throughout the years. Hope Center will use this grant money to purchase and install storm shutters at their residential apartments. A special thank you goes out to Banco Popular for all that they do to support Hope Center. MCPRS Employee Gains National Credentials The National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) has developed a national credentialing program for direct support professionals working in community human services. The purpose of this credentialing program is to provide national recognition for the contributions and competence of direct support professionals who apply for and meet the credentialing standards. Miami Cerebral Palsy is proud to announce that Mr. Elvin Alvarez, Residential Service Coordinator has become the first employee at MCPRS to gain the DSP- Credentialed status at the National Level. Most recently, Elvin also joined the ranks of the select few Nationwide DSP-C's that will begin participating in the formal portfolio submission review, and critique process for DSP-R's seeking to gain Credentialed DSP status. These accomplishments are a huge honor for Elvin and MCPRS! The Meaning of Love On the approach to Valentine's Day, the teens that take part in the LIFT program at UCP of Broward were given an assignment to describe in their own words the meaning of love. Many of them had very profound thoughts on the subject. They all believe that love is something to be taken seriously and is truly a special feeling. According to LIFT participant Erica Sapp love is "unconditional and supposed to make you feel special." James Dorsell says when you love someone, "keeping room for open communication is important, and also being honest." Teneishia Adams believes that "being in love is a privilege and something serious." The teens in the LIFT program wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day! Poseidon Group Home Goes to South Florida Fair UCP of Palm Beach & Mid-Coast Counties, Inc.
4 visited the South Florida Fair with residents from the Poseidon group home on January 26 th. Not many people would consider going to the South Florida Fair as an accomplishment. However, UCP saw it as an accomplishment for one of the adults living at their Lake Worth Poseidon group home. Last year, one of the residents visited the fair for the first time. With the many ongoing activities and attractions taking place at the fair, she did not have a good time. "Through the support provided at our group homes, this year she was able to enjoy herself and even got on two rides," said Amanda Bennett, Program Coordinator for UCP's group homes. A special thank you goes out to the South Florida Fair for providing UCP with tickets for the fair. Upcoming Events Share & Care Tour UCP of Palm Beach & Mid-Coast Counties, Inc.
