SUMMARY Thanks for coming we look forward to an exciting new school year.
Digital Learning Environment Care & Use, Safety, AUP, Support
Proper Care & Use Handling Students should always place netbooks away from food and drink. Care should be exercised when plugging in and removing power cords, cables, and external storage devices. Power cables should not be wrapped around the charger when in use. Students should carry their netbook in the carrying bag which they were given with the netbook. The netbook should be kept in the bag except when it is going to be used. Do not put any small things like paper clips, staples or coins or other loose items inside the bag which may accidently get inside your computer. Do not put anything inside the bag except the computer or you will risk breaking the screen. Always handle the computer with two hands.
Proper Care & Use Temperature Exposure Netbooks should not be exposed to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or ultraviolet light for a length of time. Do not leave a netbook in the car or outside. Such exposure to extreme heat or cold could result in damage. Screen Care Liquid cleaning solution should not be directly applied to the netbook screen or keyboard. The netbook screen can be easily damaged if proper care is not taken. Broken screens are NOT covered by warranty. Screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure. Do not touch the netbook screen with anything (e.g., your finger, pen, pencil, etc.) other than approved netbook screen cleaners. Clean the screen with a soft, dry anti-static cloth or with a screen cleaner designed specifically for LCD type screens only. Never leave any object on the keyboard. Pens or pencils left on the keyboard are guaranteed to crack the screen when the lid is closed.
Proper Care & Use Ventilation Avoid extended use of the netbook resting directly on your lap. The bottom of the netbook can generate significant heat and therefore cause temporary or permanent injury. Use a barrier such as a book or devices made specifically for this purpose when working on your lap. Also, avoid lap-based computing while connected to the power adapter as this will significantly increase heat production. Do not use the netbook with it on a pillow or other soft material that may restrict ventilation. The cost of repairs are as follows: o Screen -$50 o Keyboard- $25 o RAM - $25 o Hard Drive- $75 o WiFi Card- $35 o Motherboard- $90
Proper Care & Use Printing At School Students will have access to printers while at school. Printers available for student use will be shown in the printer list on their netbook. Students will be able to select the nearest, most convenient printer to use. Home Students will be able to install their own printers on their netbook at home.
Netbook Security An adhesive sticker with the student's ID information (picture, name, and ID number) has been placed on the lid of the netbook and on the netbook bag. ID s or ID stickers should not be removed or defaced. Each student has been assigned a netbook by serial number.
Student Internet Security & Safety What to share online & what to keep secure Safety training Document storage online Keep private information and your identity safe Dropbox is for general document storage not secure information
Internet Access for Students What if I don t have high speed internet at home? All student netbooks will be able to access the school computer network for high speed internet access. The school network can be accessed from the south school parking lot with a district issued user name and password. On school days the building will be open from 5:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. so students will be able to access the network inside the building. We have also identified local businesses who have free Wi-Fi in which students may access the internet in the community. If an Internet resource is not available or not working as expected what can be done? Contact MCHS support. Although MCHS support will address and work on every problem reported, some issues are out of the school network and can not be resolved. Often waiting and retrying a website later in the day will resolve the issue. Many websites do updates and changes that affect the availability of the tools they offer. Students will be able to access the high school network/internet: From the MCHS south east parking lot 24/7. Each morning the building is open at 5:30 a.m. After school until 4 p.m. Or any evening the school is open for events/games.
Internet Filtering & Online Safety Content Filtering at school MCHS uses a program that filters the internet while on the school s network. The filtering program identifies potential computer risks, threats and inappropriate material. The program tracks internet usage and can report past use and patterns of internet activity. NO Content Filtering provided by MCHS outside of school The student internet usage is only filtered while on the high school network. Parents are encouraged to load a filtering software on your netbook for home use. There are free and for purchase versions of filtering or parental control software for the Ubuntu Operating System. See the Tech resources page that can be found under the "Digital Learning" section on the school website The direct webpage for the resource site is
Acceptable Use policy You should have received a copy of the MCHS AUP and it is also included in the student handbook on page 38 If you have any questions regarding the AUP please contact the Administration Office
