4 MacBook Handbook for Students and Parents 4 d. Troubleshooting A first step that may help some MacBook problems is to restart the MacBook. For further troubleshooting assistance or help at home, reference the resources on sites.npchristian.org/technology. If the problem persists, bring your MacBook to your teacher when you return to class. 2. Student and Parent Responsibilities By allowing students to take their MacBook home, families assume some risk. Parents/Guardians will be responsible for replacement/repair in the event of theft, loss or damage due to intentional or unintentional abuse or misuse of the MacBook. a. Financial responsibility Determined by your insurance choice b. Lost, stolen or damaged MacBooks If a MacBook is lost, stolen or damaged, please notify the school office immediately on the next school day. c. Handling and care of the MacBook Keep the MacBook in its protective case at all times when transporting. Use the MacBook on a flat, stable surface do not use on pillows, cushions or beds. Do not set books on top of the MacBook. Avoid carrying the MacBook with the lid open. Be careful not to leave pencils, pens or papers on the keyboard when closing the lid. Do not pick up the MacBook by the screen. No food or drink around the MacBook.
5 MacBook Handbook for Students and Parents 5 To clean wipe surfaces with a soft, clean and dry cloth. Avoid touching the screen with fingers, pens or pencils. If hands are dirty, wash them before using MacBook. Do not use the MacBook in a dusty or dirty environment. If the MacBook has been in a cold car, allow several minutes for it to warm to room temperature before use. Power management e. Transport It is the student s responsibility to charge their MacBook battery at home each night. MacBook batteries must be fully charged at the start of each school day. When the MacBook is not in use, close the lid to extend battery life. MacBook should be in sleep mode before transporting. Do not leave MacBook in visible sight when left in a vehicle. Do not leave MacBook in a vehicle for extended periods of time or overnight. f. Monitoring and supervision MacBook should be used in a location where use can be monitored and supervised by a parent; unsupervised use in a child s bedroom is strongly discouraged. The student assigned to the MacBook is responsible for all use of the MacBook.
6 MacBook Handbook for Students and Parents 6 Students should not allow other students to borrow their MacBook. Software has been installed which allows the school to monitor internet use and websites visited. g. Ethical and appropriate use Students are expected to adhere to the NorthPointe Christian MacBook Acceptable Use Policy h. Internet access while away from school i. Printing Students are permitted to access the internet off-campus. They will be subject to the same content filtering as when they are at school The MacBooks are configured to use internet filtering, whether accessing the internet from home or from the classroom. Internet filtering restricts access to unacceptable sites. While internet filters provide an important level of protection, no filter program provides 100% protection. Monitoring and supervision are still very important. Plan to submit documents to your teacher in the way they specify. You may print to school printers when on campus. You may connect to a home printer with your parents permission.
