1 COMPUTER SETUP GUIDE LAPTOP

2 HARDWARE SET UP Please allow seven business days for all computer equipment to arrive. In some cases, components may be shipped in multiple boxes and may arrive on different days. STEP 1: Unpack Your Boxes Unpack your boxes and use the check list below to ensure you received everything: 1 Laptop Computer with AC Adapter (Power) Cord 1 Printer with Power Cord* 1 Printer USB Cable* 1 Mouse (USB) 1 Desktop Microphone 1 Headset Microphone 1 Ethernet Cord (*equipment provided varies according to state and school policy) Note: Be sure to keep all the boxes in which your equipment arrives. You will need them when it is time to return your equipment. STEP 2: Connect Your Hardware Here is an overview of the various cables that you should receive with your computer: 1. AC Adapter (Power) Cord 2. USB Mouse Connector 3. USB Printer Connector* 4. Headset Microphone Line-Out Connector 5. Desktop Microphone Line-In Connector 6. Ethernet Cable Connect the AC adapter cord (1) to the laptop and then plug into a power outlet. Connect the mouse (USB) (2) to the laptop. Connect the headset microphone line-out connector (4) to the laptop (headset symbol). Connect the desktop microphone line-in connector (5) to the laptop (microphone symbol). For Internet access, connect the Ethernet cable (6) to the network connector port. 1

3 INITIAL START UP STEP 3: Turn on the Computer 1. Press the power button on the laptop. Please note: the first time you turn on the computer, the setup process can take up to 10 minutes. 2. Windows will start up and begin the setup process automatically. You will see the following screens during this process, but you don t need to do anything: Blue and white HP screen. (You will see this screen more than once during the setup process.) Black and white screen that says Press F3 to boot to the K12 Restore Utility. (You will see this screen more than once during the setup process.) Do NOT press anything at this time, but note that if at any time you need to restore the computer to the original settings, this is where you press F3. See page 4 and/or the K12 Restore Utility Instructions document in the Computer Safety Tips folder located on the desktop for further information. Starting Windows screen. (You will see this screen more than once during the setup process.) Setup is starting services, Setup is installing devices, Setup is applying system settings, and Setup will continue after restarting your computer screens. The computer will automatically restart. Do NOT press anything at this time. Setup is preparing your computer for first use and Setup is checking video performance screens. Welcome screen preparing (purple bar across K 12 background). 3. Next, the Virus Protection window will appear. McAfee Anti-Virus software protects the computer from malicious programs such as viruses and spyware. Fill in the requested information and click Install. If your school is not in the dropdown list, please select Other. 4. When the McAfee Web Protection window appears, read about the tool and click Enable or Disable. If you would like to enable or disable McAfee Web Protection at a later time, refer to McAfee Web Protection Instructions in the Computer Safety Tips folder located on the desktop. 5. Read through the Welcome to K 12 screens, click Next after you read each page, and click Close when finished. If a black box appears, it will close automatically after a few seconds. 6. In the Date and Time window, select your time zone first and then confirm the date and time. Click OK. 7. A black screen will appear for about 30 seconds followed by a white box, which will finalize the setup process. 8. If the Set Network Location window appears, click the X or Cancel button to exit. If you need assistance setting up your Internet connection, please contact your Internet Service Provider. 9. The desktop with the K 12 background and icons will appear. See page 3 for descriptions of each icon. Now you are ready to start using the computer! Note: You may be prompted to install updates each time you shut down the computer. Please click Install and Shutdown to keep your Windows software up to date. 2

4 PRINTER SET UP To install the printer, please refer to the CD-ROM installation discs located in the printer box. Do NOT plug in the printer power cord or USB printer connector before inserting the discs. DESKTOP SCREEN Once your computer is ready, you will notice the icons pictured below on the screen. Here is a quick overview of these icons: 1. Student Folder: Students save all of their school work here. This folder also contains the following documents: a. Materials Shipment Information: To track your course materials shipments. b. Open Office FAQs: Information about Open Office (document, spreadsheet, and presentation processing suite installed on the computer). 2. Recycle Bin: Documents no longer needed can go here. 3. Internet Explorer: A type of Internet browser. It provides the ability to navigate the Internet and websites. 4. Computer Safety Tips: This folder contains tips to keep your computer healthy. It includes the following documents: a. K12 Restore Utility Instructions: Reimage your computer if you need to wipe your hard drive clean because of a virus or malware. b. K12 Support Helpful Links: A resource for answers to frequently asked questions. c. Maintenance Tips: A list of tips for maintaining your computer and keeping it virus free. d. McAfee Antivirus Instructions: How to perform a full scan of your computer. e. McAfee Web Protection Instructions: How to enable or disable McAfee Web Protection. f. McAfee Web Protection: Click here to enable or disable McAfee Web Protection. 5. Customer Support: This will take you to help.k12.com where you can find answers to many of your questions as well as other resources and training. 6. K12 Start: Click here to go to our Secrets of Success website, a great resource for new and continuing families to stay connected. 7. OLS: This will take you to the K 12 Online School login page where students take their courses. 3

5 COMPUTER SUPPORT AND FAQs For support, FAQs, troubleshooting, and maintenance tips for your computer, click the Customer Support icon on your desktop, and then click on Computer Equipment from the menu bar across the top. Here you can find helpful information about your computer, including: How to delete temporary files in Internet Explorer How to clear Cache and Cookies on your Internet browser How to create a Learning Coach and/or Student OLS account How to change and/or retrieve your OLS user name and password What to do if you have Internet connectivity issues Where to go to track your materials order status Watch helpful video tutorials And much more! K 12 RESTORE UTILITY This computer has a recovery or reimaging partition that will wipe your hard drive clean and revert it back to the format in which you initially received it. This would need to be done if your computer is affected by a virus, spyware, malware, or other malicious program. Before beginning this process, please ensure that you save all of your documents to the K12 Drive. This way, once you wipe your hard drive, your documents will be secure and will not be deleted. Save Documents on the K12 Drive 1. Go to the start menu and click Computer. 2. Double click K12 Drive. Note: Only save your documents to the K12 Drive when restoring your computer. Otherwise, student work should be saved in the Student folder located on the desktop. Reimage the Computer Continue with the steps below to fully restore the computer to its original format. 3. Shut down the computer and then turn it back on. 4. After the HP screen appears, you will see a black screen that says Press F3 to boot to the K12 restore utility Press the F3 button on your keyboard when you see this screen. Note: THIS SCREEN ONLY APPEARS FOR THREE SECONDS 5. When the K12 Restore Utility pop-up appears, click Yes to continue. 6. When the second K12 Restore Utility pop-up appears, click Yes again to continue. 7. Lastly, you will see a window with the following information in the title bar: X:\Windows\System32\diskpart.exe and then X:\Windows\System32\imagex.exe This shows the percentage of applying progress as the restore progresses and can take minutes. 8. When the process is complete you will receive the following message: The restore was successful. Please Click OK to restart your computer. Click OK to restart. Note: You may need to update the software on the computer after this process since this is the original image, and software is updated often. 4

6 K 12 COMPUTER USAGE REQUIREMENTS Maintenance and Repair: As the parent or guardian of a student enrolled in a school using the K 12 curriculum and a K 12 -provided computer (the Program ), you are responsible for the maintenance and repair of that computer while it is in your possession. You are required to follow all of the instructions for the computer repairs as directed by K 12 Customer Support and the warranty agreement with the original equipment manufacturer. You are directly responsible for upgrading to new software versions when publicly available, obtaining and installing antivirus file updates, and overall maintenance of each software application provided. Use of the Property: To continue to use the computer and receive technical support, you are also required to comply with the following: You shall use the computer solely for the education of the student enrolled in the Program and not for the benefit of any other person or for any other purpose. You shall use the computer in accordance with the Program policies and rules and the instructions of K 12 and the manufacturer. Each software application provided with the computer shall be subject to, and used in accordance with, the license and/or use agreement that accompanies that software application. You shall use the computer subject to Program policies and rules regarding network/internet use and protocol. You are solely responsible for ensuring that the software settings, default configurations, and administrative privileges are maintained at the original specified settings of the computer when it was delivered. You will be liable for any resulting damage to the computer, any files, and/or other software applications if these default settings are changed or modified without explicit authorization from K 12 Customer Support. Returning the Property: You are solely responsible for returning the computer equipment. A triggering event, such as withdrawal from the Program or receipt of replacement equipment, will cause K 12 to send a reclamation letter to your address with shipping labels and additional steps on how to return the equipment. If you do not receive a letter, go to webform.k12.com and complete all of the required information to request shipping labels. 5

7 RECYCLING PROGRAM AT K12 INC. According to United Nations Environment Program, as much as 50 million tons of e- waste is generated worldwide each year. In the United States, only 20% of e-waste is recycled. The rest is dumped or exported to India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Ghana where some units are remarketed and some dumped. Dumping impacts the environment, both directly and indirectly. It has the potential to introduce toxins into water systems, and it chips away at the sustainability of the planet. As earth becomes littered with landfills, the space available for replenishing natural resources continues to diminish. Without recycling and reusing commodity resources, we risk depletion and/or contamination of our remaining natural resources. Reprocessing used materials to make new products and packaging reduces the consumption of natural resources. As a business leader, K 12 has undertaken a sustainability program that includes recycling, remarketing, and redeploying computers, and creating environmentally friendly kit boxes. Through our recycling and reusing of computers, K 12 has had a significant impact on energy savings, greenhouse gas reduction, and hazardous waste reduction.
