3 About the Program Chancellor State College will implement a Year 6 12 Laptop Program in This handbook has been developed as a guide for parents and students to assist in making their own decisions about which option is best for their situation. Please note: This handbook is subject to change, the most current handbook will always be available on the school website. Technology at Chancellor Chancellor State College has been at the forefront of education delivery through the use of technology. It is a tool that enhances pedagogy, facilitates the creation and sharing of knowledge and allows differentiation in learning. Technology is more than a method of retrieving information. Teacher emphasis is on learning intent and teachers use ICT in the classroom in an educationally purposeful way to convey this intent. A 1:1 student laptop program: Enhances independence and self-initiated learning among students Extends student learning beyond the classroom Promotes the development of 21 st Century teaching and learning Research shows: Students who access their own computers take greater pride and ownership over the knowledge they create (with a flow on to more flexible forms of schooling) 1:1 programs extend formal learning communities to include parents, siblings and other people important in students lives ICT in the Australian Curriculum ICT is represented in the Australian Curriculum as a general capability: o Competence in ICT Students develop ICT competence as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately when investigating, creating and communicating ideas and information at school, at home, at work and in their communities. 4 Outline of the Three Options Three options are available. Note: Further explanation of each of these is provided on later pages in this handbook. Option One Option Two Option Three Chancellor Laptop Program (CLP) Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) National Secondary Schools Computer Fund (NSSCF) Years 6-9 Years 7-12 Years Cost: $350 per annum Cost: $40 per annum Cost: $200 per annum The Chancellor Laptop Program is available to all students in Years 6 9. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) in Years Students who currently use a NSSCF laptop, may hand it in and participate in the BYOD option. NSSCF is the current program available to students in Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 and will be phased out by the end of In 2015 this program will only be available to students in Year 10, 11 and 12. Chancellor State College will purchase a laptop for use by the student through the government purchasing facility. Through a Student Resource Scheme Payment, students will have access to: A Take Home Laptop School licensed software Technical Support Full access to the school network Secure, filtered and monitored work environment Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) School printers access The BYOD device from home must fit the minimum specifications as outlined in this handbook. These devices will be able to connect to a part of our school network called the BYOD Gateway. Through the payment of an annual fee, students will be provided with: Wireless connectivity to the Chancellor BYOD Gateway via a password issued by the college Internet connection Access to learning materials supplied on the BYOD Gateway Access to School printers through the Gateway via installation of software provided by the college When students are connected to the BYOD Gateway their online activity will be monitored by CSC staff. Phase Out Plan 2015 Year 10, 11, Year 11, Year It is proposed that all students will participate in the Chancellor Laptop Program or BYOD from this year forward. 5 Option One Chancellor Laptop Program (CLP) The Chancellor Laptop Program aims to provide a laptop option for parents and guardians of students in Years 6 9. Through a Student Resource Scheme payment, students will be allocated a laptop for use both at home and at school. Background Information Chancellor State College is able to purchase laptops through the Education Queensland Purchase IT facility. This facility provides considerable discounts to schools purchasing in bulk from authorised providers. Parents and students participating in this scheme will pay a student resource hire fee providing access to: A Take Home Laptop School licensed software Technical Support Full access to the school network Secure, filtered and monitored work environment Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) Warranty Conditions School printers access How it Will Work Parents complete and return to the front office: 1. Chancellor Laptop Program - Participant s Agreement form 2. A full payment of $ No payment plans will be entered into for this program. Parents/Guardians will have either: a. All outstanding accounts are paid in full. b. Payment of the 2015 SRS scheme be either fully paid or the first instalment received. c. Full Payment must be received prior to laptops being issued. The college will not accept a payment plan for this program. d. The College will be accepting payment for the BYOD option during Term1, Online Safety Program It is strongly advised that parents complete the Online Safety Program, details are available on the school website. Go to the Extra-Curricular tab then Computers and Internet. This program has been developed to assist parents to have a conversation with their child about being safe online. Other Details: Secure, Filtered and Monitored Work Environment Participation in the Chancellor Laptop program provides a secure, filtered and monitored work environment through the use of Education Queensland s BlueCoat, Symantec Corporate Virus Scanner and monitoring software used by IT and Administration staff called ABTutor. This provides staff with access to laptops connected to the school network enabling staff to view and monitor the work being done by students whilst at school. Once a laptop is disconnected from the school network, AB Tutor does not monitor the work being done by a student. Laptops at Chancellor State College 2015 Information and Procedures Handbook Page 5

6 Technical Support The College s IT Help Desk is open at the Secondary Campus: Before School 8.00am 8.30am 1 st Break 11.10am 11.55am 2 nd Break 1.05pm 1.20pm After School 2.30pm 4.30pm This help desk is the first point of contact for all Chancellor Laptop program problems. Depending on the problem, our technicians may resolve it or advise further action. The laptops are fully covered by a manufacturer s warranty and an Accidental Damage Policy has been applied to all Chancellor Laptop Program laptops. The Help Desk will be equipped with a fleet of loan laptops for students participating in the Chancellor Laptop Program should there been a major issue. Primary Campus IT Help Desk opening hours are to be decided and will be advertised early Full Access to the School Network School Network Internet All school files All school software Network Multi-Function Devices enabling students to print and scan to Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) is compulsory All Chancellor Laptop Program laptops are covered by the manufacturer s Accidental Damage Policy. Conditions apply to the lodgement of claims including: 1. an excess fee of $55 for each claim 2. a maximum of three parts per year is covered. The parent and student MUST sign a declaration that includes how the damage occurred. This declaration will be logged with the claim to the manufacturer. Payment for the repair to a laptop through the Accidental Damage Policy is the decision of the manufacturer, not Chancellor State College. Any damage incurred that is not considered by the manufacturer to be accidental will need to be paid for by the parent. Warranty Conditions Warranty conditions include a next business day response from the manufacturer which provides detail within 24 hours of the length of time required to repair the laptop. All warranty claims will be logged and the repair organised by Chancellor State College IT Technicians. A computer screen is provided in the IT Help Desk Foyer providing students with information about the completion of the repair. 7 Option Two Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) option allows for students in Years 7 12 to purchase their own laptop and use it at school. The BYOD option provides students with access to part of the school network, internet, printing and class resources. Only devices that are owned by Education Queensland can be connected to the School Network. Bring Your Own Devices will have limited access to part of the school network through a device called the BYOD Gateway. Parents will be required to supply: A device that meets the minimum hardware and software specifications provided in this handbook. It is highly recommended that the device provided is a laptop. Any repairs required. The IT staff at Chancellor State College will not provide repair support to BYOD devices. How it will Work Security of BYOD, Damage/Theft - Insurance As part of the security strategy in regard to digital devices, all BYOD laptops and devices must be engraved on the bottom of the machine with the student name ie First Name and Surname. Check with your Home and Contents Insurance company regarding damage or theft of the device. While the College will continue to deal with inappropriate behaviour in line with existing policies, the College is not liable for any damage or replacement costs incurred while the device is at school or travelling to and from school. Any student who does damage or steal another student s laptop may be disciplined according to the College Responsible Behaviour Plan Lockers have been provided in the IT Foyer for any student to use for the temporary storage of their laptop. 8 Hardware Minimum Specifications - Bring Your Own Device The College recommends that any laptop or tablet meets the minimum specifications below to enable suitability for curriculum based activities. The minimum provided reflect those of devices that are able to be purchased by the College so will ensure comparability with College owned devices. College ICT technicians will make every effort to enable connectivity of devices which meet these minimum specifications, assuming there are no technical or other issues outside of their control. An attempt will be made to connect other devices, but parents and students should be aware that connectivity may not be possible if there are technical or other issues. Apple computers are used in the Visual and Performing Arts faculties at this point in time. Student subject choices and interests should be considering when deciding whether to purchase a Windows or Apple laptop. Year 6 to 12 Laptop HARDWARE 12 inch Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) laptop or 11 inch MacBook Air Intel Core I3 Processor 4Gb RAM 320 Gb Hard drive or minimum 128Gb flash storage; 512Mb recommended if using a large number of audio/video files else an external hard drive) No optical drive (standard in ULV and MacBook Air laptops Intel HD Graphics 4000 video card 2 USB ports n Wi-Fi IEEE a/b/g/n compatible (wireless network connectivity) 11.6 inch Anti-glare LED display Integrated speakers and microphone with headphone ports (standard in laptops) Integrated webcam US Keyboard with full size keys within the footprint 1 x integrated pointing device eg Touchpad Windows 8 operating system (or Mac OS x Mavericks) 6 cell (6 hour) battery with 3 year warranty ensure battery is minimum 6 hour 3 year warranty Hard or protective shell laptop case to suit model. Software Minimum Requirements - Bring Your Own Device Software as outlined below must be provided by parents for BYOD devices. 9 Option Three - NSSCF The National Secondary Schools Computer Fund program will continue in 2015 and will cease by the end of Through a full payment and the completion of NSSCF Participation Agreement form, students will have access to: A Take Home Laptop School licensed software Technical Support Full access to the school network Secure, filtered and monitored work environment Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) School printers access Only students participating in the NSSCF Take Home program will be provided with these machines. NSSCF Funds Ceased The Student Laptop Program at Chancellor State College has been a highly effective initiative. For the past four years, every Year 9 to 12 student has been provided with a school owned device for use in every lesson, every day. This has been made possible through the federally funded National Secondary School Computer Fund. The National Secondary School Computer Fund (NSSCF) has invested $2.3 billion nationally to provide for new information and communications technology for secondary schools. Chancellor State College ensured that these funds were fully accessed and utilised. This program has been an important element of the Australian Government s Digital Education Revolution agenda and has helped address national ICT shortages in secondary schools. Due to the cessation of the federally funded NSSCF program, a future plan has been developed and will be implemented to ensure that this 20th century way of working continues in Years This opportunity will be extended to include Years 6 8 in NSSCF Phase Out Plan 2015 Year 10, 11, Year 11, Year 12 Laptops at Chancellor State College 2015 Information and Procedures Handbook Page 9

10 Frequently Asked Questions For all Laptops/Devices Will I need to bring the device to School every day? Yes. Teachers are transforming the way they teach to take advantage of students having unlimited access to technology. The new digital platform curriculum means that computers will be essential tools in each classroom. What is deemed inappropriate? All illegal (unlicensed) software; pirated music or videos; defamatory documents, or images, or any content not suitable for viewing by persons under the age of 18 are deemed inappropriate. Will the school assist me with home internet connection settings and issues? No. Your home internet provider or local computer technician can assist you with these enquiries. Do I need to back up? Yes. It is the student s responsibility at all times to back up all files. The school assessment policy clearly states that loss of data due to information technology problems is not an acceptable reason for assessment extensions. How is the device kept safe? It is the student s responsibility to have their device with them at all times. Will the teacher be able to provide technical support in class? No. The IT Help Desk is open before and after school and during break times. Chancellor Laptop Program Can I install my own software and games on the device? No. Installation of privately owned or privately downloaded software and games onto school laptops is not allowed. Will I be permitted to use the device during School Holidays? Yes. Students are permitted to keep their devices during holiday periods unless it has been recalled for maintenance. Devices are not permitted interstate or overseas at any time. Will I still be able to participate in class if my battery goes flat? It is the student s responsibility to ensure their device has adequate charge for a full school day at school. Swap batteries will be available from the IT Help Desk however numbers will be limited. How will I be kept safe online? The Department of Education and Training provides all devices with a Cyber safety Help button. See the Secure, Filtered and Monitored Work Environment details provided in this handbook for further information. Will the school protect the device from virus attacks? Yes. Each device will have Queensland Department of Education and Training owned anti-virus software installed and this will be refreshed when the student logs onto the school network. The network also has anti-virus protection so all precautions are taken to prevent against malicious software. However it must be realised that 100% protection cannot be guaranteed. Will restoring the laptop delete all files? Yes. All student files must be backed up by the student on an external USB or hard drive. When a laptop is repaired, often it is rebuilt to its original state and all files are deleted. Laptops at Chancellor State College 2015 Information and Procedures Handbook Page 10

11 BYOD We already have a device at home; can I use it at School? Yes, but we recommend it meets minimum specifications as provided in this document. Will every device work inside the Education Queensland network? No. Some devices with low specifications have been found to not connect within the EQ network. These devices may have difficulty with the security filters used by Education Queensland. How will I be kept safe online? When a BYOD device is connected to the Gateway, student work including Internet searching will be filtered and monitored through Education Queensland filters and security systems. AB Tutor will also be used at Chancellor State College to monitor the activities of students while working on the BYOD Gateway. Will the school assist me with network connection settings at school? Limited assistance will be provided. Students will be provided with a handout of instructions available from the IT Help Desk at school. At times throughout the year, IT and teaching staff will provide group meeting time for all students with BYOD devices to attend for instruction on how to connect to the network. Will the school protect the device from virus attacks? No. This remains the responsibility of the owner. Do I need 3G? No home 3G or 4G service will be allowed to be used at school. The school has an effective wireless network available and it is Education Queensland s policy that whilst at school the school web proxy must be used. Does the school provide software for my BYOD device? No. This is the parents and students responsibility. Refer to the Minimum Specifications provided in this document. Can I take my BYOD device to IT for repair? No. The IT Department cannot work on a privately owned device. Limited assistance to connect to the Gateway will be provided through an instruction handout and group meetings held at times throughout the year. Can I bring my charger to school? No.The charger must have a current Education Qld Test and Tag fitted. How do I protect my BYOD device? Protective equipment such as bags or cases need to be organised by the parent and student to keep these devices safe while at school, and travelling to and from school. It is the responsibility of the student to look after the device while at school and kept securely in bags. Lockers area available in the IT Foyer for temporary storage of devices.
