2 9. Students must return ipads in good condition at the end of the school year. ipads will not be available for use during the summer months unless authorized by an administrator or under special circumstances. B. Lost, Damaged, or stolen ipads C. Possession 1. The insurance policy of NSSD will cover only damage of an accidental nature and will cover the cost of repairing or replacing a damaged ipad. 2. The parent/guardian shall immediately report a lost or stolen ipad, which occurs off campus, to the police and provide a copy of the police report to the District. 3. The student shall immediately report a lost or stolen ipad, which occurs at school, to the administration. 4. The parent/guardian shall be responsible to pay the school district for any costs for blatant and obvious negligence. NSSD may repossess the ipad at any time at its sole discretion for any violation of this agreement or District policies. D. Modification to the ipad Program 1. The District reserves the right to revoke or modify the ipad Program or its terms at any time. III. Expectation of Privacy for Student ipads A. The ipads and their containers are the property of North Summit School District and are not subject to the same privacy expectations as private property. There is no expectation of privacy while using the ipad. B. NSSD has the right to manage and monitor the ipads in the following ways: 1. Teachers and administrators may remotely access, view and control student ipads. 2. Teachers and administrators may search the ipad for inappropriate use or materials at any time. 3. Technology will remotely control student ipads to troubleshoot technical issues. 4. Technology staff will monitor all network traffic to troubleshoot network issues. 5. North Summit School District requires all Internet traffic to pass through the content filter. This filter will log all attempts to access inappropriate material. Violations will result in disciplinary action, which may include limited ipad privileges. IV. General Care of the ipad A. Students are responsible for the ipad they receive. Damaged ipads or ipads in need of repair must be reported to the NSSD office. B. Guidelines to follow: 1. Students should never leave an ipad unattended. 2. Students should never allow someone else to use their assigned ipad or give someone else their passwords. 3. Students should never remove labels and identifying stickers on ipad/case. 4. Liquids, food, and other debris can damage the ipad. Students should avoid eating or drinking while using the ipad. Students should NOT keep food or food wrappers on the ipad case. NSHS Student ipad Handbook Page 2
3 5. Students should take extreme caution with the screen. The screens are very susceptible to damage from excessive pressure or weight. 6. Dimming the LCD brightness on a students screen will extend the battery run time. For help, consult a student s teacher, a school technician, or school technology specialist. 7. Under no circumstances should a student attempt to open or tamper with the internal components of the ipad, nor should they pry it apart. 8. Students should take care when inserting cords to avoid damage to their ipad ports. 9. Students should not expose their ipad to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, or ultraviolet light for extended periods of time. Extreme heat or cold may cause damage to the ipad. 10. Students should not write, draw, paint or place stickers/labels on their ipad or bag. Remember the ipads and bags are the property of North Summit School District. 11. Students should keep their ipad away from magnetic fields, which can erase or corrupt their data. This includes but is not limited to large speakers, amplifiers, transformers, and old-style television sets. C. Cleaning Your ipad Students are encouraged to perform simple cleaning procedures as outlined below: a. Students should always disconnect the ipad from the power outlet before cleaning. b. Students should never use liquids on the ipad screen or keyboard. c. Students should clean the screen with a soft, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth or use anti-static screen cleaners or wipes. d. Students should wash hands frequently when using the ipad to avoid buildup on the touch screen. Grease and dirt can cause the cursor to jump around on the screen. D. General Security 1. Students should never leave their ipad unattended or unsecured. ipads should be secured in a designated storage area or a secured locker. 2. During after-school activities, students are still expected to maintain the security of their ipad. Unsupervised ipads will be confiscated by staff, and disciplinary actions may be taken. 3. Each ipad has an identifying label (i.e., NSSD asset number, serial number, and engravings). Under no circumstances are students to modify or destroy these labels or markings. 4. Each ipad will be tracked through an asset recovery system which can locate a stolen/lost ipad when it is connected to the Internet. E. General Use of the ipad 1. Students are REQUIRED to bring their ipad to school each day with a fully-charged battery. Students will not be given the use of a loaner ipad if they leave their device at home. It will not be possible to charge an ipad during class time. Students leaving ipads at home will be required to complete assignments using alternate means (as determined by the teacher). Students who have ipads in for repair will be given a loaner ipad. 2. Students will be able to save files directly to the ipad. However, files for instructional use should be backed up to the student s home directory, and it will then be backed up by the district. Only school-related data should be placed in the home directory. If an ipad is experiencing a technical issue, it is likely to need a reset, which will destroy all local data that is not backed up. 3. Students will receive disciplinary referral from their teacher for repeatedly refusing to bring the ipad to class. NSHS Student ipad Handbook Page 3
4 4. Students should avoid using their ipad in areas, which may lead to damage or theft. Students should not use their ipad around sporting activities, during events, or in the cafeteria area when food is being served/consumed. 5. Students should mute ipads or use earphones at all times, including at school and on buses, unless permission is obtained from the teacher and/or driver. 6. Students should not delete any apps that they did not create or that they do not recognize. Deletion of some management apps could result in an ipad failure and will interfere with your ability to complete class work. 7. Students are prohibited from playing games unless directed by the teacher. 8. Chat rooms are NOT to be accessed unless directed by the classroom teacher. 9. The use of the Internet at school is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use may result in suspension/termination of user privileges. 10. Parental monitoring of ipad use is highly recommended. 11. Students will provide access to any ipad computer and/or accessories that they have been assigned upon the district s or school s request. 12. Students will continue to be assigned a space on the server for storing educational files (home directory). This directory should be used for backing up and storing files as directed by the teacher. Your teacher may provide additional common storage space. 13. Students who violate the Safe School Acceptable Use Policy may lose access to their ipad after hours and have limited access during school hours. 14. Students caught stealing or damaging another student s ipads will be responsible for replacement or repairs. They will be referred to local law enforcement for prosecution. 15. Pictures, audio or video recording with any technology without teacher permission is prohibited. 16. Any use of the ipad or other technology for demeaning, intimidating, harassing, or bullying students or staff is prohibited. 17. Any sharing of inappropriate material produced on a school device or on any device on school property is prohibited. F. 1. NSSD manages and monitors student accounts. 2. Students should always use appropriate language. 3. Students should not transmit language/material that is profane, obscene, abusive, or offensive to others. 4. Students should not send mass s, chain letters or spam. Mass s may be sent only with permission from the principal s office. 5. Students should maintain high integrity with regard to content. 6. No private chatting during class. 7. NSSD is subject to inspection by the school staff, administration, and district administration. There is no expectation of privacy for ipad use. G. Internet Access/Filtering 1. As required by the Children s Internet Protection Act, a current filtering solution (Lightspeed) is maintained by the district for school use on this ipad. This is a good faith effort to block all inappropriate content, but the district cannot guarantee that access to all inappropriate sites will be blocked. It is the responsibility of the user and parent/guardian to follow guidelines for appropriate use of the network and the Internet. NSSD will not be NSHS Student ipad Handbook Page 4
5 responsible for any problems suffered while on the network or the Internet. Use of any information obtained through the Internet is at the user s own risk. 2. In order to access the Internet away from campus: a. Students must have access to an Internet service provider. b. If students have access to an existing wireless access point, the ipad can join the wireless network. c. NSSD can t provide direct assistance in connecting student s ipad to any non-nssd network. H. Login Procedures 1. School Use: Students will log into the NSSD network by using their assigned username and password. Students will have access to network home directory storage when logged into the NSSD network. It is a student s responsibility to backup any school-related files to their provided data location (cloud or drop box). 2. Home Use: Away from school, students will log into their ipad using the same username and password they use at school. A designated area on the hard drive will be available for storing school-related files; backup of any data stored on ipad is the responsibility of the student. 3. DO NOT share passwords. Students are responsible for anything done on their ipad. I. Copyright Compliance with federal copyright law is expected of all. "Copyright" is legal protection for creative intellectual works, which is broadly interpreted to cover just about any expression of an idea. Text (including and Web information), graphics, art, photographs, music, and software are examples of types of works protected by copyright. Copying, distributing, downloading, and uploading information on the Internet may infringe the copyright for that information. Even an innocent, unintentional infringement violates the law. J. Screensavers / Background images 1. Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver/background. 2. Presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drugs, gang-related symbols or pictures will result in disciplinary actions. 3. Passwords on screensavers are not to be used. 4. Lockout passwords are forbidden. If used, students may be responsible for the cost of replacement hardware. K. Deleting Files Students should not delete any files that they did not create. Deletion of certain files can affect the ipad s performance. NSHS Student ipad Handbook Page 5
