1 Aquatics Parent Tot Classes WATER ORIENTATION (3 Months-1 year) Basic water orientation for parents and young children that will cover safety skills, holding positions, songs, time to bond with your child in the water. GOLDFISH (6 months-2 year olds with a parent) At least one adult must accompany each child. Age appropriate water adjustment skills. If your child needs to be held in the water or is unable to stand in the shallow end of the pool at 2 6 this is the class for you. SUNFISH (2-3 year olds with a parent) At least one adult must accompany each child. Completing the Goldfish class prior to Sunfish is recommended. Child must be able to stand in the shallow end of the pool at 2 6 to participate in this class. Age appropriate water adjustment skills. Preschool Progressive Swim Program (AGES 3-4 year olds) SHRIMP (3-4 year olds) Must be comfortable in the water without a parent and be able to stand in the shallow end of the pool at 2 6. This is not a parent-tot class. Must have completed Sunfish or recommended by instructor. Skills focused on in this level: front and back floats with assistance, front float independently, blowing bubbles, putting face in water, submerging head, flutter kicking. KIPPER (3-4 year olds) Must be comfortable in the water without a parent and be able to stand in the shallow end of the pool at 2 6. Must have progressed from Shrimp to Kipper to take this class. Skills focused on in this level: front & back floats independently, front and back glides with kick, beginner stroke with forward progress, front crawl 4-5 strokes, jumping into shallow water independently. Preschool Progressive Swim Program (Ages 4-6 year olds) PERCH (4-6 year olds) Skills focused on in this level: front and back float with assistance, front float independently, blowing bubbles, putting face in water, submerging head, flutter kicking. PIKE (4-6 year olds) Skills focused on in this level: front & back floats independently, front and back glides with kick, beginner stroke with forward progress, front crawl 4-5 strokes, jumping into shallow water independently.

2 Aquatics Preschool Progressive Swim Program (Ages 4-6 year olds) EEL (4-6 year olds) Skills focused on in this level: kicking with flotation front and back, front and back glide with kick, rotary breathing with flotation and kick, front crawl 20 feet, finning on back with kick, back crawl 10 feet, treading water, jumping into deep water. RAY (4-6 year olds) Skills focused on in this level: rotary breathing with flotation and kick 25 yards, front crawl 10 yards, finning on back with kick 10 yards, back crawl 10 yards, treading water 15 seconds, jumping into deep water independently. STARFISH (4-6 year olds) Skills focused on in this level: front crawl 25 yards with good form, back crawl 25 yards with good form, finning on back with kick 25 yards, introduction to elementary backstroke, endurance swimming, treading water seconds, introduction to diving (APY/NMY only). YOUTH PROGRESSIVE SWIM PROGRAM AGES 6 (1 ST GRADE AND OLDER) PRE-POLLIWOG Skills focused on in this level: front and back float independently 5 seconds each, kick with flotation front & back 5 yards, front and back glide with kick, submerge head, front crawl 5 yards, finning on back with kick 5 yards, intro to treading water, jumping into water independently. POLLIWOG 1 Skills focused on in this level: front and back glide with kick 10 yards each, rotary breathing with flotation and kick 25 yards, front crawl 10 yards, finning on back with kick 10 yards, back crawl 10 yards, treading water 15 seconds, jumping into deep water independently. POLLIWOG 2 Skills focused on in this level: front crawl with breathing 25 yards, finning on back with kick 25 yards, back crawl with good form 25 yards, endurance swimming, treading water 30 seconds, introduction to diving (APY/NMY only). GUPPY Skills focused on in this level: front and back crawl 50 yards each in good form, introduction to elementary backstroke kick, endurance swim 75 yards, treading water 1 minute, kneeling dive (APY/NMY only). 2

3 Aquatics YOUTH PROGRESSIVE SWIM PROGRAM AGES 6 (1 ST GRADE AND OLDER) MINNOW Skills focused on in this level: front and back crawl 100 yards each in good form, elementary backstroke 25 yards, introduction to breaststroke kick, endurance swim 150 yards, treading water 3 minutes, standing dive (APY/NMY only). FISH Skills focused on in this level: front and back crawl 150 yards each in good form, breaststroke 25 yards, introduction to scissors kick, endurance swim 250 yards, open turns, treading water 3 minutes (1 minute each arms only, legs only, both), underwater swimming, diving (APY/NMY only). FLYING FISH Skills focused on in this level: endurance swim 300 yards front crawl, individual medley 100 yards, sidestroke 25 yards, butterfly 25 yards coordinated, treading water 6 minutes (2 minutes each arms only, legs only, both), underwater swimming 3-4 body lengths. SHARK Skills focused on in this level: endurance swim 15 minutes front crawl, flip turns, individual medley 200 yards, butterfly 50 yards in good form, 10 lb. object retrieval from deep water, basic lifesaving skills. SWIM CLUB Aquatic club for youth that have completed the Shark level of the progressive program and want to continue development of stroke, endurance, and speed but do not wish to join the swim team. The Swim Club will introduce them to swimming competitively without being on the swim team Jr. LIFESAVER COURSE Program designed for youth that have completed the Fish level of the progressive program and want to focus on skills that will make them prepared for a Lifeguard Course. This class will focus on swimming endurance of front crawl, breast stroke, front crawl and breast stroke approach stroke, learning how to do simple assists and rescues, and introduction to CPR and First Aid Skills. 3

4 SPECIALTY AQUATICS Older Youth Lessons (Ages years) (APY, HVY) This is a class for children who are older and are not comfortable being in a progressive level with children much younger than them. Adult Swim Lessons (Ages 14-Adult) (APY, FWY, HVY, NMY) The instructor will meet the needs of each individual person attending the class. This class will help the very beginner swimmer to the more advanced swimmer trying to refine their strokes. Adult Skills & Drills Triathlon Training (Must be at least 18 years, no age exceptions!) (HVY) Great swimming is more than getting from here to there. This program will take a holistic approach to improving your swimming. This is not a progressive swimming lesson program, you are welcome to attend as often as you would like. Winter Session 1: Group 1 5:00-6:00 AM Jan 8,22 and Feb 12 Group 2 Noon-1:00 PM Jan 15,29 and Feb YMILER CLUB (APY, FWY, HVY, NMY) Y members keep track of the miles you swim in our pools. You will be rewarded for reaching mile stones in your swimming quest. YOUTH TRIATHALON TRAINING (APY) Each week youth will be trained and put through a workout on at least one component to prepare for a triathlon. Participants will receive workouts from a Certified Personal Trainer or Swim Coach to improve swimming stroke, running form, biking techniques while improving overall conditioning in preparation for the sport of Triathlons. All participants will receive a FREE entry into the YMCA Indoor Triathlon on March 1 at the Appleton YMCA. PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS (APY, FWY, HVY, NMY) We offer private swim lessons for all ages and abilities. Please contact your local YMCA Aquatics Department for more information and availability. Helping Hands Special Needs Swimming Lessons (6-18 years) (NMY) This swim lesson program is for individuals in 1 st -12 th grade with special needs. 2 classes are offered to address different age groups (6-12 years and years). Sensory Swim Lessons (FWY) A swim program geared specifically for children with Autism. Contact Paul Bady or pbady@ymcafoxcities.org for more information. Home School Swim Lessons (6-12 years) (FWY, NMY, HVY) Swim lessons offered specifically for home school students. 4

5 SPECIALTY AQUATICS Intro to Diving (6-12 years) (NMY) Learn the basics of diving. Participants must be comfortable swimming in deep water. This class will provide preparation for the Spring Board Diving class. Spring Board Diving (6 years and older) (NMY) Learn the basics of spring board diving. 2 classes are offered to address different age groups (6-9 years and 9 years and older). Beginner divers are encouraged to take the Intro to Diving class prior to enrolling in this class. Participants must be comfortable swimming in deep water and able to perform a standing dive from the side of the pool. SCOUT SKILL BUILDING Boy Scout BSA swim test and Aquanaut badge skills checks available. Boy Scout Merit Badge for swimming or lifesaving available at the Appleton Y location. Please contact your local YMCA branch Aquatics Department for more information. LIFEGUARD TRAINING (APY, NMY) Course Prerequisites Must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session day of this course. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing using the front crawl and breast stroke. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds (without using goggles). 1. Starting in the water swim 20 yards. 2. Surface dive, feet first or head first to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. 3. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object. 4. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. WSI Water Safety Instructor APY This course will certify you to teach Red Cross swim lessons. You must be 16 years of age by the end date of the class. 5

6 SPECIALTY AQUATICS KAYAK DEMO Bring you suit and try kayaking under the guidance of a kayak instructor, or you can watch a demonstration of a kayak roll, meet the instructors, and get your questions answered about the upcoming classes. KAYAK ESSENTIALS Beginner level, must be 14 years of age or older. This class is designed to introduce students to kayak basics used both by sea and whitewater kayakers. KAYAK RESCUE TECHNIQUES Intermediate level, must be 14 years of age or older and have taken kayak essentials or have the lead instructors approval. This course will teach or improve rescue techniques and the kayak roll. SWIM TEAM The YMCA of the Fox Cities offers a year round competitive swimming program for all ages and abilities ranging from new swimmers to national level athletes. Practices opportunities are offered five evenings per week for the novice, age group swimmers and National athletes. BLUE LEVEL PRACTICE GROUP: BLUE I This group is for ages 12 and under. It focuses on learning the four competitive strokes, understanding the basics of using a pace clock reading and intervals, and working on turns and starts. Blue I Fees: ($295) BLUE II Blue II is for swimmers that have participated on the team for a minimum of one season, have attended at least two swim meets, can legally swim 3 of the strokes and falls between the ages This level will continue to focus on developing the four competitive strokes, turns and while starting to swim training set. Blue II Fees: ($310) WHITE LEVEL PRACTICES GROUPS: WHITE I For age White I focuses on the development of the four competitive strokes, starts and turns in an enjoyable atmosphere. Beginning to start interval training and set work with a pace clock. Fees: ($340) 6

7 SWIM TEAM WHITE II This group focuses on longer distances, individual medley training, stroke mechanics, and the basics of a dry land program. This is for the 12 and under athlete that would like to commit to the sport of swimming and practice 3 to 5 times per week. Attention is given to stroke mechanics and learning the basics of a dry land program. Fees: ($425) BLACK LEVEL PRACTICE GROUPS: BLACK I The Black I group is the first of senior training levels. This is a training group that is for the new 13 and over swimmer or any athlete that wants to practice swimming to stay in shape and work on stroke correction in a relaxed environment. Fees: Full Season ($410), High School Girls Swimmers ($265), High School Boys Swimmers ($210) BLACK II The Black II group is the top group of the Fox Cities YMCA Swim Team and its stature is reflected in its requirements. Two-a-day practices and dry land workouts are offered. Athletes are required to participate in a minimum of 4 practices per week. Fees: Full Season($455), High School Girls Swimmers ($300), High School Boys Swimmers ($230) MASTERS SWIM TEAM Masters Swim Team is for anyone over the age of 18 that is interested in continued swimming, training, and/or competition. Gaining coaching feedback can be helpful for everyone from the most advanced swimmers to those that are just learning how. Spring/summer practices will be offered out of Appleton YMCA, Neenah YMCA and Erb Park. The Masters season will begin the week of September 17 and run in conjunction with the FCY age group program which runs through the end of March. Spring/Summer fees ($150 to join the team or a $10 per practice training fee) For practice schedules, masters team registration or more information please go to the Masters page on the Fox Cities FCYST Powder Blue Crush Stroke Camp The Powder Blue Crush is a weeklong stroke camp designed for Blue I, Blue II, White I and Black I (with less than 2 years of experience) athletes. Powder Blue Crush will be focusing on stroke mechanics, racing starts and turns and racing techniques. This program will be held in the Buchanan Pool and in the gym. Swimmers should have their swim gear and workout appropriate clothing, socks and shoes. We meet by the Lower Lobby and start with Dry land. Waiver must be completed before the start of camp and can be found on the under the registration tab. 8 SWIM TEAM FCYST Blue Crush Training Camp The Blue Crush is an intensive week long training camp designed for Black II, Black I (with two or more years of experience) and White II Swimmers seeking an intense boost to the start of the swim season. Blue Crush will concentrate on Biomechanics, Drills, Core Strength, and Flexibility. This program may be held in the Buchanan Pool, outside, in the gym, multi-purpose room or aerobics studio in the Appleton YMCA. Each day will have a different focus so come ready for anything! Swimmers should have their swim gear, equipment bags and workout appropriate clothing, socks and shoes. We meet by the Lower Lobby. We meet by the Lower Lobby and start with Dry land. Waiver must be completed before the start of camp and can be found on the under the registration tab. 9 CAMP NAN A BO SHO Registration for all Camp Nan A Bo Sho Youth and Family Summer 2014 programs begins, at all five YMCA of the Fox Cities locations, on Monday, January 6, 2014, at 6:00 a.m. In late December, brochures will be mailed to past participants and available at all locations. Summer activities at NABS include: swimming, canoeing, canoe trips, fishing, sailing, archery, riflery, funyaks, paddle boats, arts and crafts, kayaking, windsurfing, horse back riding, campfires, camp outs, and high and low ropes activities. Camp Nan A Bo Sho (NABS) is located 90 miles north of Appleton, near Lakewood, Wisconsin, on Waubee Lake. Archery, swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, arts and crafts, environmental education, riflery, cooperative sports and games, skiing, sledding, biking and more available! Our Orbison Lodge seats 150 people in the dining hall and accommodates approximately 48 people year round in the lodge s sleeping quarters. Our heated cabins accommodate 120 people from April to November with a bathhouse centrally located. Our close proximity to the Nicolet National Forest, McCauslin Brook Golf Course, ski areas, many lakes, numerous miles of hiking, biking, snowmobile and cross-country ski trails make it an ideal location for your: Family reunion Field trip Ski weekend Weekend getaway Corporate retreat Youth group School group Retreat Adventure Course Opportunities at NABS: A Fifty Foot Climbing Tower - This three sided climbing tower offers one side for the beginner and one side for the advanced climber and the third side for repelling. When you reach the top of the tower, a 350 foot zip line will take you on a thrilling ride through the woods. A Twelve Station Low Ropes Challenge Course - This offers an opportunity for groups of up to 15 people to work together as a team to overcome challenges. An Eight Station High Ropes Challenge Course - This offers safe individual and team challenges in a unique setting 35 feet above ground, among the trees. Safety is our main concern. All high and low challenge programs are under the supervision of trained, certified staff. YMCA Camp Nan A Bo Sho believes in Challenge by Choice in which the individual decides what he/she will attempt to accomplish. 9

The first part of the day will be the 4K portion with the remainder of the day offering weekly activities including Spanish, American Sign Language and swimming. 15 GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT For additional nature related Growth and Development classes, please see the Environmental Education section of this document. Parent and Child Growth and Development classes require a parent, guardian or grandparent to accompany each child in class. Tiny Explorers (18-30 months with parent) (HVY) Children will move between fun stations that focus on fine & large motor skills, social & emotional development along with learning center skills to help with language development & self help during a 7 week program. This class is recommended for children that are nooxt ready for an independent class. Mommy and Me (18 months-3 years with parent) (HVY) Children and Parents will enjoy fun group and individual activities while learning to build on language development and projects that build self-confidence. This will be a lively time to bond and make new friends. Scribbles and Dribbles (Ages 1-3 years with parent) (APY) Glitter, glue, painting, collage, play clay...we do it all. The class ends on a musical note with singing, music and movement. This multi-media experience is not to be missed. Parental participation is required. Tiny Tots (Ages 1-3 years with parent) (APY) Different activities will be introduced each week to enjoy and develop physical and social skills, while you both enjoy interacting with other parents and tots. Wonderbug Discoveries (Ages 2-4 years) (ACY) This parent-child nature discovery program is highly sensory-based involving themed storybooks, songs, hands-on time, and outdoor time with exploratory walks through the Purdy Nature Preserve. Each week will focus on a different theme or topic in nature. Indoor Playground (Ages 2-5 years with parent) (NMY) - Winter Session 1 You and your preschooler can escape to the gym and burn off energy this Winter. This is a supervised program with parent and child. Parent participation is required. Let s Get Movin (Ages 1½-3 years) (NMY) Child must be a walker. Toddlers will develop gross motor skills through fun games and independent play. Just For Twos (Age 2 years) (APY, HVY, NMY) Group interactions encouraged through songs, games and finger plays. Arctic Adventures (Ages 2-3 years) (FWY) - Winter Session 1 Get creative and make fun winter art projects and explore the cold arctic through stories, songs and active play. 15

Tutoring is provided M-TH throughout the school year (October-May). We provide 1 or 2 one-hour sessions a week between the hours of 3:30 and 8:00 PM at the Appleton YMCA and between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM at the Fox West YMCA. A $25 registration fee for the school year is due per family at the time of the first appointment. Jedi Training (APY, FWY) Class is a great mix of fitness, sports and imagination. Each week, participants will focus on different training methods of the Jedi from Yoda to Luke and more.
