3 Diabetes Prevention Program As a leading nonprofit for strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y believes that all people should be able to live life to its fullest, healthiest potential. In the YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program a trained lifestyle coach will introduce topics in a small classroom setting and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity and behavior changes can benefit their health. Prediabetes is a potentially reversible condition that occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Risk for developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced or eliminated by weight loss, healthier eating, and increased physical activity. Diabetes is a serious condition that causes blood sugar levels to rise higher than normal. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Currently, diabetes affects more than 29 million people. Prediabetes may be reversible; diabetes has no cure. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or believe you may be at risk for developing the disease, the YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you develop a healthier lifestyle. Program Features: 16 weekly sessions, followed by 8 sessions for the remainder of the year Led by a trained Lifestyle Coach A group that offers motivation and support Change is tough we can help. The guidelines of the 14 week program are set by the Mako coaching staff & practices are conducted by a member of the professional coaching team. All new participants are required to complete a swim assessment where they must successfully demonstrate the ability to swim 25yds of freestyle with their face in the water without Mako Swim Team YOUTH SPORTS The Mako Swim Team is the Regional YMCA's competitive swimming program for swimmers 6 years and above. The program is led by a professional coaching staff and is supported by a strong volunteer group. 9 HEALTHY LIVING (cont'd) MEASURABLE PROGRESS, UNLIMITED SUPPORT The YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program is a one-year, community based program where participants work in small groups with a trained Lifestyle Coach in a relaxed, classroom setting. In 16 weekly sessions, followed by 8 monthly sessions, participants learn how to incorporate healthier eating, moderate physical activity, and problem-solving and coping skills into their daily lives. Togetherhood provides Y members with fun, convenient and rewarding ways to give back and support their neighbors through their own ideas, skills and energy, and the network of the Y. Get involved! We need committee members to help plan projects as well as one-time volunteers to give just a few hours of their time at a specific volunteer event.
