The BIG 2014 Youth Summer List was created by Partnership for Better Health, The Greater Carlisle Project and our outstanding community partners. Together, we recognize that summer is a critical time for all young people to learn, grow and explore new challenges that extend beyond the classroom. If you have questions about this list or would like new program information to be added in the future, contact the Partnership at Program Camp Invention Ages Grades 1-6 Description Camp invention inspires confidence in curious children like yours. Build original prototypes, create motor-powered vehicles and take apart electronics to construct a pinball machine. Dates June Hours 9:00AM to 3:30PM Location Bellaire Elementary School in Carlisle (905 Waggoner s Gap Road) Cost $220 Contact Info Website Registration Available online at: campinvention.org Program Carlisle Arts Learning Center: Summer Art Camp for Kids Ages Elementary grades for 9 weeks and one week for youth ages 9 14 (August 11-15) Description Painting, drawing, clay, mixed media and printmaking, 3-D creatures and more. Sign up for one or more weeks focused on a variety of creative themes. 2 Program Carlisle Arts Learning Center s (CALC s) Summer Art Camp at Hope Station Ages/Grades 5 to 11 years old Brief The art camp at Hope Station gets the creative juices flowing. Campers have fun working Description with clay, paint, found objects and many other art materials. Camp includes lunch. Dates August 4-8, 2014 Hours 9am Noon Location Hope Station, 149 W. Program) Ages 12 to 15 years old (must have passed 5 th grade) CONNECT/ArtWorks! is a collaboration between Dickinson College and the Carlisle Arts Learning Center. The camp gives teens an opportunity to engage in and grow through Description creative summer programming. Emphasis is placed on the visual arts and their ability to positively change and enrich lives. Topics include: architecture, sculpture, photography, creative writing, natural art and curating an exhibit. Students will be exposed to a college setting and will eat lunch in Dickinson s Dining Hall. Dates 4 weeks- July 1 though July 25 (off July 4 th ) Hours 9am to 3 pm Location 38 West Pomfret Street in Carlisle (CALC), and many Dickinson locations (Trout Gallery) Option One: $150 per week / $600 total for the program Option Two: Need-based scholarships are available and will remain confidential. 12 full scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Fill out scholarship application that determines what guardians can afford. Full scholarship students are Cost responsible for a $50 Material Fee that can be paid at any time during the 4 weeks. 4 Program Carlisle Family YMCA- New Frontiers Day Camp Ages Ages 8-14 Description Day campers travel from the Y each day by bus to the 100-acre Y s Men s Club farm, located about 10-minutes from the Y. Youth enjoy weekly field trips, fishing, arts and crafts, team-building, swimming, cooking, photography, games and more. Campers will Discover why the Yellow Breeches watershed is so unique, Inquire about how to connect local foods and renewable energy and water resources, and Grow as they define what is important in their own lives. The camp revolves around hands-on learning and aims to foster a love of the outdoors, sense of place, skills in nature journaling and crafts, and practical experience in farming and science. Program LEAF Project (Leadership Education And Farming) Ages/Grades years old Description LEAF is a farm-based youth employment program in which youth work alongside farmers and chefs in South Central PA. Youth develop essential employment and personal skills while doing the meaningful work of raising food. Produce is sold to area restaurants, donated into hunger relief, and used in a weekly cooking class with expert chefs. Youth participate in a variety of workshops on food systems, social justice and leadership. 9 Program TEENS Soldier Experience Living History Adventure Camp Ages Grades 7-10 Description Youth will experience the daily routine of soldiers as they trained to meet historical challenges to the safety and security of the nation. Using the tasks, conditions, and standards from historical training manuals, students will engage in realistic drills and develop an understanding of the conflicts that shaped our nation s history.
