Leasing trends From Green to Corporate Social Responsibility We asked the directors and CEO s of the most important international leasing companies what trends they were noting on the European market. For the third consecutive year, green is one of the subjects which comes up more frequently, but it s not the only one: business opportunities in the East, Corporate Social Responsibility, internationalisation and TCO also make an appearance, amongst many other subjects. Axelle DEMOULIN Many large clients are continuing to grow internationally and expect their business partners to grow with them. Although green is once again one of the burning issues this year, not all the players have the same point of view on this question. Using green knowledge better According to Jörg Essig, of Daimler Fleet Management, Ecological responsibility, a positive image, and an increasing impact on business results due to new CO 2 regulations, for instance are growing in importance as factors in consultation discussions. Olivier Fossion, of ALD Automotive, also believes that the green issue is getting more sophisticated: Interest in green(er) vehicles will continue rising, but in a more elaborate way, taking into account CO 2 emissions, fuel consumption, and other pollutants such as NOx, particles, etc. In the same way, KBC believes that being green means finding a balance between ecology and economy, while still respecting the driver. Stany Van Besien and Tom Vlaminck: For a lot of customers the challenge over the coming years will be to find the right balance between keeping the budget stable, while polluting as little as possible and keeping the driver satisfied. So, offering the optimal car in a shortlisted car list will be core, and the lease partner could have a major consultative role in this selection and decision process. GE also agrees on the importance of green expertise: Our customers expect that we continue to be proactive in terms of guidance and expertise to reduce emissions and prepare for the future. As green concerns grow, fleet managers expect legislation demands and other environmental pressures to get tougher. FleetEurope Magazine The future will be greener still Nevertheless, in the eyes of Nick Brownrigg, of Masterlease, even if green is much talked about, it is still not a predominant factor in client choice: Recent research carried out by Masterlease shows that despite political and business pressure, the environment is still not a major factor for fleet decisionmakers across the world when looking at strate

gic vehicle procurement. However, we think that it will become an increasingly important factor in fleet decisions because it is something that all large businesses will have to act on. Increasingly leasing companies will be offering innovative ways to help businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their fleets, both by vehicle choice and changing driver behaviour. Christel Reynaerts of Alphabet agrees that green is gaining importance, even if companies have not yet structured their fleet in a green way. The high fuel costs and CO 2 tax on vehicles have accelerated the green trend. However, while some large multinationals have started to adopt sustainable policies, most companies have not yet put a truly green fleet policy in place. Companies need toptobottom reviews of their activities to understand how they can make improvements and then implement an action plan. CSR Matt Dyer, of LeasePlan International, has noted for his part a move from a solely 'Green' focus to a more comprehensive CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) approach for global fleets: In the past couple of years many companies have adopted Green measures, from offsetting CO 2 emissions to a more comprehensive carbon footprint measurement and management program. These programs typically include elements such as driver training and effective car maintenance and also have a positive Accident prevention and driver safety are social responsibility issues that will become increasingly significant. impact on employee safety. In the future we will see an increasing number of corporations taking a more comprehensive CSR approach, which means balancing the environmental impact of their fleet with employee safety whilst keeping a close eye on the cost related impact of these measures. Olivier Fossion has a similar view: Corporate Social Responsibility is also on the agenda of most companies, including, but not limited to: green fleet policies, safety programs, bundling of fuel In the future we will see an increasing number of corporations taking a more comprehensive CSR approach. cards and insurance departments becoming part of the fleet stakeholders. Grégoire Chové, of Arval, has also observed a rising concern for social & environmental stakes. CEE Five years after the opening of the European Union to new members from the Centre and the East, international suppliers still believe in the growth potential of the CEE region. Stany Van Besien and Tom Vlaminck estimate that Central and Eastern Europe will continue to boom and present excellent growth figures, including in fullservice leasing. Most markets in this region are far from being mature but fullservice leasing is unquestionably making ground. The learning curve of the product follows the same logical steps as in Western Europe, many years ago, however the speed of adoption is much higher. Christian P. Rehbein of Sixt Leasing also notes the rising potential in Eastern Europe as more and more businesses are expanding into these countries. Innovative solutions Michael Schmied, of BAWAG believes that the trend towards service modules and hence away from standard packages is still continuing, thus the providing of tailormade solutions is becoming increasingly more common. Wim Halsberghe, of Fleet Synergy International, goes further: It will be no surprise that (international) leasing companies will also have to offer solutions adding value and going far beyond the daily management of their customers car fleet. It will be our job to rethink mobility solutions, consolidate the direct relationship with the drivers and put a strong emphasis on sustainable fleet management solutions. Jörg Essig speaks of best in class solutions: More and more customers are requesting offers from captive leasing companies to get the best offer for their car brands. Therefore it is essential that we can offer to our customers an allinclusive solution, vehicle plus additional services, that fits their requirements and that are best in class. Bob Stehman of ING Car Lease believes that pressure from non traditional players such as dealers, brokers, and captives will require leasing companies to come up with non traditional approaches and innovative solutions. He adds that the maturity of the product lifecycle will force leasing companies to develop new products offerings and marketing approaches (environment, mobility, TCO ), in order to avoid commoditisation. Grégoire Chové believes that quality of Service is at the top of customers priorities and customer expectations are increasing. Driver needs are FleetEurope Magazine 42 13

The digitalization of the business is leading to demands for solutions that allow employees to work from anywhere at anytime. FleetEurope Magazine key considerations, which means services targeted at the drivers of the vehicles will develop, believes Bob Stehman. For Marc Demoulin, of GFS, an important aspect will be the ability for international lessors to consolidate data from all around the world. He also believes that leasing companies will be asked to provide more and better consultancy. Glocal Another trend that has been identified is the need to be present globally without loosing the local touch. As Nick Brownrigg explains: We believe that major corporates are going to be looking for European fleet suppliers who have global presence but work with experienced local staff on the ground. The best European fleet deals get the right balance between cost and benefits by combining international expertise with detailed local knowledge, i.e. by using central coordination and management but taking into account tax differences, local customer requirements and legislation. These deals can offer significant cost savings while ensuring smooth implementation. Stany Van Besien and Tom Vlaminck, on the other hand, stress the importance of the local aspect. They believe that international companies will rediscover the added value of local and regional lease companies. Nowadays international deals with one Pan European lessor are most often negotiated between HQ from the lessor and HQ from the customer, with low involvement of the local people and limited understanding of the existing network. KBC Lease is convinced that selecting a local or regional lease partner will avoid the risks of service discrepancies, disengaged local management and dissatisfied drivers. Mobility Mobility is one of this year s buzz words. Christel Reynaerts explains: The digitalization of the business world, increasing pace of business, and refocused attention on work/life balance is leading to demands for solutions to save time, acquire information faster, and allow employees to be more flexible to work from anywhere at anytime. Only through crossborder traffic, efficient logistics and mobile solutions for employees can companies meet the today s fastpaced requirements. Mobility has to be achieved independently of time and place. On the same subject, Christian P. Rehbein explains that customers show a tendency to have mobility out of one hand, which means rental vehicles from one hour up to leasing vehicles for 5 years. This movement will continue because companies gain synergies and reduce their costs. Driver safety Just like last year, the safety issue, driven by the duty of care legislation in the UK, is continuing to gain importance. One aspect put forward by Christel Reynaerts: Motorvehicle accidents are the top cause of workrelated injuries. Some governments are turning to solutions which make corporations adopt social responsibility schemes to increase public safety. Accident prevention and driver safety are social responsibility issues that will become increasingly significant in the coming years. Amongst challenges which clients will have to face up to, Grégoire Chové also cites driver safety. An aspect which Marc Demoulin links with green fleets and ecodriving, thus demonstrating that where safety is concerned, green and safety are going in the same direction, that of reducing risk and cost. TCO When talking with international fleet suppliers, TCO is always inevitably mentioned. Some companies note among their clients a growing concern for TCO. Jörg Essig remarks that:

TCO has become a dominant aspect in the discussions with our customers, as does Christel Reynaerts: More and more fleet managers are basing their decisions on a priceperkilometre calculation rather than lease rates only. The total cost of ownership for an international fleet gives managers insights into the costs of a company car fleet over its entire lifecycle and ways of controlling those costs. Grégoire Chové, from Arval, speaks of a rising demand for TCO optimisation. And Marc Demoulin emphasises that TCO management will lead to greater transparency in the proposals. New segments European suppliers are beginning to be interested in a relatively new segment: small and medium companies and even independent traders. Jör Essig observes that: demand for fleet services by small and mediumsize companies as well as from business customers (e.g. lawyer, etc.) will also increase. At Arval, they are also noting this trend to open operational leasing to small enterprises. A few suppliers Nick Brownrigg: In recent years there has been much talk about large European businesses switching to single international fleet suppliers, rather than using different leasing companies in each country. However, we believe International companies will rediscover the added value of local and regional lease companies. that over the next couple of years we will actually see these businesses looking to move back to two or three suppliers across Europe. This gives the advantage of being able to take into account local sensitivities and preferences without being a onesize fits all solution. Christian P. Rehbein also expects continuous movements to a one or two supplier strategy. Outsourcing Externalising the management of certain aspects of their fleets enables companies to concentrate on what they do best their core business; a trend which is not about to disappear, as Matt Dyer explains: Due to increased competitive pressures, more companies are focusing their internal resources on their core activities and competences. Consequently, they need to be able to rely on their business partners for their noncore processes. Companies are increasingly expecting us to provide an endtoend fleet management service; managing all fleet related activities on behalf of our client including elements such as fleet policy development, direct driver communication and TCO control. Christel Reynaert adds that: Outsourcing is particular relevant in fleet financing and management. Companies choose to finance fleets and relevant services with external funds to minimise the drain on internal funds. Outsourcing not only fleet financing but also fleet management accident management, fuel management, etc. allows the company to free up precious (and expensive) management resources. Grégoire Chové believes that this trend will lead to the development of full outsourcing solutions. Internationalisation and central coordination For Christel Reynaerts, One of the most widespread trends in the fleet management and leasing sector is the internationalisation of fleet solutions. More and more international organisations are choosing to develop and implement consistent, companywide car policies, driven by operational efficiencies and cost advantages. Matt Dyer subscribes to this point of view: Many of our large clients are continuing to grow internationally and expect their business partners to grow with them. In order to manage their international expansion in an operationally efficient and costeffective way, there will be a continued focus on process and policy harmonization in fleet management. Christel Reynaerts follows the same line of thinking: An international fleet brings its own challenges. Central coordination is high on the list for many multinationals. However, tax, registration, insurance, and legislative regulations vary from one country to another. In addition, individual clients may have their own companyspecificrequirements. Each of these items has to be handled locally, but the solution must be centrally coordinated and implemented to achieve costreduction targets. Central managers are therefore required not only to provide efficient solutions, but also to drive and monitor local management. It is obvious therefore that they expect central coordination from their fleet suppliers. The high fuel costs and CO 2 tax on vehicles have accelerated the green trend. Challenges for clients Grégoire Chové puts himself in the place of clients and underlines the major challenges they have to face: The rocketing rise in fuel prices, along with CO 2 reductions, are preoccupations shared by the major international companies and countries with dazzling economic growth, such as India, Turkey and the countries of Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, this increase in the cost of vehicle use taxes, insurance, fuel is going to weigh heavily on car fleet management. This is no doubt the reason why Marc Demoulin predicts that the downsizing of the fleets is a trend set to continue. FleetEurope Magazine 42 15

In addition to the international deals, it negotiates with national networks to guarantee best coverage and service standards in the respective country. What are Alphabet s priorities for the next 12 months? Christel Reynaerts: The hottest topic today in fleet management is sustainable development; customers are asking solutions that combine efficiency with environment when designing their car fleet strategy and thus ensure their corporate social responsibility. Another issue on the rise, especially in the UK, is a corporation s responsibility for its mobile employees, to the employee, his family, and to the public at large. This issue has really gained momentum in the UK which is working on possible new legislation to hold corporations responsible for accidents involving their employees. Alphabet supports efforts of manufacturers and politicians to set the frame to ensure greatest safety for drivers and others. Establishing innovative products such as the development of our fuel offer and our web tools. Improvement of our processes : ACE (Continuous Efficiency Improvement), an approach linked to substantial operational results. This method of undertaking projects aims to optimise the efficiency of the company s processes: quality, timescales, productivity. In 2007, the results achieved were substantial. For example, a reduction of 80% in the time taken to issue fuel cards in the UK and a reduction of 50% in the number of unfounded claims with suppliers in France. In the UK and Spain for example we have developed an electronic community for company car drivers called Drivers Club which gives them attractive deals on second cars, tyres and maintenance. This is something which we will consider developing in other suitable markets. In the UK, the Netherlands and Spain, we have successfully run a fleet safety programme. Last but not least, our ECO Lease service which operates successfully in the Netherlands is currently being introduced in Belgium and UK. In the years ahead even more emphasis will be placed on delivering market leading online services for fleet managers and drivers. 1. Countrybycountry approach: each country has to deliver autonomously value for customers and ING 2. Strong cooperation between business units on product development, best practices and approach Pan European clients 3. Central European team for international operating clients Fleet Europe Magazine countries (excl. alliances) Alain Vervaet Total number of staff: 970 ING Group Active in the market since: , , , has been another commercially successful year. ING Car Lease maintained its position among the top five largest international, manufacturerindependent car leasing companies in Europe. All business 158,400 units have grown in amount of customers and volume in cars. *Figures as of July What are ING s priorities for the next 12 months? Bob Stehmann: The objectives for ING Car Lease are to focus on delivering best in class, innovative and simple services to our customers and expanding valuable growth in Europe. We want to grow in a way that still allows us to offer best in class service for our customers but also good value for our shareholders. We are going for value growth rather than volume, but we know that size does matter in Car Leasing as it is becoming more and more a commodity. This will influence also the pressure on price and therefore delivering a superior service, not only for companies, but also for the drivers is becoming highly important. ING has a strong position in our current mature markets: the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. We are growing in Spain, Italy, Poland, France and Luxembourg. We are now investigating to expand in Central Eastern Europe, where we use the resources and the network of ING Bank and General Lease. Bob Stehmann is International Director Marketing & Sales.

Masterlease Subsidiaries: Masterlease operates in a total of 17 countries across the globe: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The company entered the Scandinavian market for the first time last year with new operations in Norway and Denmark and is hoping to expand its global footprint to 20 countries by the end of this year. Alliances/cooperation agreements: We have worked in strategic partnerships with other players in some markets such as Scandinavia and this is a consideration for the future. Masterlease offers a comprehensive range of products and services including: Fleet funding Outsourced driver management Fuel management Breakdown cover Short term hire Replacement vehicles Insurance Foreign travel services Minilease options from 1 month to 1 year Downtime management Accident management services Maintenance management Reporting Fleet audit Consultancy and advice Cost management Driving licence validation We are continually reviewing the products and services we offer in a rapidly changing global fleet market. As the environment becomes an increasingly important issue for our customers around the world, we are looking to further develop the services we can offer to help them improve the environmental performance of their fleets. Our strongest asset is having a dedicated international sales team which we have structured to make sure it is the most effective in the leasing industry. The team is led by Emmanuel Roche, director of international sales. There are also two international sales managers, as well as an international account manager in each of the 17 countries in which we operate. This means that we can combine all of the benefits of international leasing with dedicated local delivery. 17 countries Nick Brownrigg Total number of staff: 1,200 GMAC Financial Services Active in the market since: , , , ,600 What are Masterlease s priorities for the next 12 months? Nick Bronwrigg: We have made no secret of our ambitions and are looking to become a world class full service leasing business. We very much see ourselves as the challenger in the industry. As a smaller player in this market, we can offer customers something that our larger competitors cannot; individual attention and a fleet specifically tailored to the needs of each country. We don t try and implement a one size fits all standard solution across all territories. Instead we work with teams in each country to ensure we are mindful of cultural sensitivities and local need. With a presence in 17 countries already, we are looking to expand our global footprint to 20 countries by the end of the year. We have recently secured twelve deals that will see us implementing around 15,000 new vehicles across Europe over the next two and a half years. Another key priority is to expand this global fleet size further while maintaining the local delivery which we feel sets us apart from our competitors. Nick Bronwrigg is CEO.

KBC Autolease Subsidiaries: We are present in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary and there is a Greenfield in Poland where we will make a start in June or July this year. In this respect, KBC Lease is following in the footsteps of the KBC Group, which had already activities in these four core CEE countries. However, it is our intention to cover more countries in the CEE region, on the condition that the local market allows for a positive business plan. Romania is probably the next target. We also have a leasing company there, but the result of the business plan will determine whether we opt for developing the Full Service Leasing product as a business unit within the existing leasing structure, or whether we opt for a new leasing company as we did in Poland. We believe the CEE region has a lot of potential. Alliances/cooperation agreements: Mergers or alliances with local players will be considered whenever there is a good business fit. We are always improving our services and looking for new product opportunities. Nowadays this is a minimum requirement in order to keep a competitive advantage and to create key differentiators from the rest of the market. To emphasize this philosophy, we recently created a project team that will continuously improve the quality and speed of execution of our projects. The latter involve all departments of our companies, both national and international. This will create a burning platform for ideas, fresh thinking and knowledge. We are first of all a daughter of the KBC Lease Group who provides all kinds of leasing products to the market and with a representation in nearly all European countries, with its HQ in Brussels. Within this group, KBC Autolease Belgium has been appointed to serve as the Competence Centre for fullservice car leasing, given its 25 years experience in this domain. For our PanEU structure we have so far chosen to keep it as lean as possible whereby the international people can fully rely on the support from specialists out of Belgium, while developing the CEE countries and sharing Best Practices. Locally, in the countries, one person has been appointed to closely cooperate with the international department and the specialists. Cooperation has been setup on multiple activities, e.g. crosscountry selling, process review and enhancements, international tenders, corporate identity, reporting and more Comparing our strategic vision with big(ger) paneuropean lease companies it is crystal clear that ours is different since we pursue the motto think global, act local. In the day to day this means that from HQ we will give specific guidelines, including control, and guide the development of some key common systems, such as IT (fleet management software, consolidated reporting). Moreover our Belgian entity has convinced the KBC Lease Group that taking the role of local hero is the best strategic choice for us. Being lean, having a local focus, with some international systems and guidelines leaves plenty of room for flexibility and creativity to dealing with changing customer requirements, on local and international level. 6 countries International Business Development Manager (KBC Autolease): Tom Vlaminck Executive Director (KBC Lease Holding): Stany Van Besien Total number of staff: 205 (full service car lease only) KBC Group Active in the market since: 1982 In some Central EU countries we doubled the size from 2007 to 2008 and in Belux we had a 39,350 fleet growth of 12%. 25,641 28,743 What are KBC Autolease s priorities for the next 12 months? Tom Vlaminck: During the next 12 months we will put KBC s fullservice activities further on the map and our goal is to let the national and international companies know that we can play a serious role, as a local hero or as a regional (CEE and Belux), solutions provider! We consider the golive in Poland as an important milestone because from then onwards we will cover 4 core CEE countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). Furthermore we will be exchanging best practices across the countries and we will continue developing our PanEU fleet management software, including consolidated reporting. Tom Vlaminck is International Business Development Manager LeasePlan Subsidiaries: In order to meet our clients expanding geographic coverage, LeasePlan opened offices in Romania and Turkey in In the case of Turkey, we entered the market through a joint venture with Dogus Otomotiv, Turkey s largest automotive value chain provider. In 2009 LeasePlan will open an office in Mexico. GreenPlan: The first global service which deals with CO 2 reporting and advice on how to improve a customers fleet CO 2 emission and offsetting. Active in the market since: was an excellent year. The lease portfolio achieved organic growth of 5.1%, bringing the total fleet to 1.3 million. 1,073,000 1,225,000 1,246,100 1,300,000 What are LeasePlan International s priorities for the next 12 months? Matt Dyer: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Our clients are introducing CSR policies which include CO 2 reduction targets and driver safety objectives. At LeasePlan International we are working together with our clients to help them set and achieve measurable targets in the key areas of people, planet and profit. Coordinated CSR measures in these areas will not only reduce a fleet s carbon footprint and increase driver safety but will also have a positive impact on the TCO of the fleet. We support our clients to achieve their CSR objectives by benchmarking the current carbon footprint of their fleet, advising on key measures that will reduce the carbon footprint and working together to implement them. We provide our clients with the tools not only to measure the reduction of CO 2 but also to measure the resulting impact on the TCO of their fleet. In 2008 we will continue to work in partnership with our clients to set and achieve their CSR targets. Implementing fleet strategy that achieves business objectives: We will continue to work closely with our international clients, which will allow us to define and implement a fleet strategy that truly reflects their business strategy balancing cost control and reduction with driver satisfaction and productivity. In 2008 we will further develop our client satisfaction measurement tools that will provide comprehensive insight into the levels of satisfaction at global, local and driver level. We will continue to further develop our Open Calculation service offering to meet our clients' demands for clear and transparent solutions. As business partner to our international clients, we believe that an open approach will best achieve our clients objectives. Geographical coverage: In order to meet the needs of our international customers, LeasePlan is constantly working to expand its geographic scope. New offices to be opened in 2009 include an office in Mexico. Our priority when opening a new office is to ensure that clients experience the same high levels of service and harmonised range of products that are available in all LeasePlan markets country offices. Matt Dyer is Managing Director of LeasePlan International.

Unico Car Lease Alliances/cooperation agreements: We are always actively searching for new members to expand our network. All members offer both Operational and Financial Lease solutions. Each country has a dedicated Unico person for local issues. We also have a central contact for the paneuropean account management, and business development. 13 countries Greg Tepas (Chairman) Jan van Delft (Vice Chairman) all independent members Active in the market since: ,500 Most of our members have experienced a steady growth but the 394,000 constant adjustment of our network explains the variation in figures. What are Unico s priorities for the next 12 months? Greg Trepas: Our partner in the Netherlands, Terberg Leasing, offers a successful green program named GREENLease. GreenLease has the capacity to reduce CO 2 emissions by deploying energysaving vehicles (A, B or C label) and offering retraining in driving style. To compensate for the remaining CO 2 emissions, trees are planted in the Netherlands, Central Europe and around the equator. GREENLease issues a special fuel pass which enables a calculation of the required CO 2 compensation on the basis of the number of litres of fuel used. The driver can keep up to date with his or her contribution to CO 2 compensation via the Internet. Our priority for the coming months will be to implement GREENLease with our partners troughout Europe and Northern America Greg Trepas is Chairman.. 377, ,500 Volkswagen Leasing Subsidiaries: In accordance with the expertise of Volkswagen Financial Services AG, as part of the Volkswagen Group, to promote vehicle sales via appropriate financial services with the aim of meeting the Group s targets for rate of return, opportunities exist for the continued geographic expansion of Volkswagen Financial Services AG.
