On Friday night, Airband gave SHS students (and staff) the opportunity to showcase their incredible dance moves! A big shout out goes to the SHS Leadership class, Mr. Porter and his Tech Crew, Mr. Mocatta, and the SHS student body. Saturday night, Silverthorne Pavilion was packed full of Summit s youth, looking more like movie stars going to an award ceremony than high school students. Thank you to the students, volunteers, class sponsors, and community members who supported this outstanding opportunity. A safe, fun time was had by all. Lastly, After-Prom continued its success with the highest attendance to date. Providing students with a jam-packed night of safe, healthy fun, Peggy Hiller and a number of community supporters have established this event as the place to be following the big event! We are truly blessed to have the support of such an amazing community, and we look forward to continuing our partnership to support the county s youth. Thank you!
2 PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR FINALIST! Summit School District is proud of the accomplishments of SHS and Summit High School Principal Drew Adkins who was selected as one of four state finalists for the prestigious Colorado 2014 MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year for Middle and High Schools. As a state finalist, Mr. Adkins was interviewed by his peers in the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP), a department of CASE and an affiliate of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The Principal of the Year program recognizes leaders who have succeeded in providing high quality learning opportunities for students. Selection criteria include personal excellence, collaborative leadership, curriculum, instruction, assessment, and personalization. The winner of this prestigious award was announced earlier in May, as Mr. Frank DeAngelis, retiring principal of Columbine High School. When asked to reflect on the process, Drew stated that when you consider the amazing career of Mr. DeAngelis, I am honored to have been considered for this award. Colorado s Principal of the Year will represent our state in the national competition in September. The six finalists of the national award each receive a $1,500 grant. The two national award winners receive an additional grant of $3,500. The grants are used to promote the advancement of learning opportunities for students.

4 WEEKLY BULLETIN ---- May 20-25, 2013 (please click to open this week s listing) Exam/Review Period Parameters: * All courses will hold a formal review period on campus or use that time for content project presentations, or other relevant learning activity that is tied to content standards. * All courses will meet for an assessment, student presentations, or learning activity designed to provide a final opportunity for students to demonstrate proficiency in one or more content standards, which will inform the final score/grade for the course. * Students are exempt from exam periods only if it is an "open" period in their schedule (Study Hall, No class, etc.) * A student may be exempt from a review period if they are earning a C/2.0 or higher, and have teacher permission. Attendance will be taken. * With the approval of both teachers, a student may be excused from a class review period in which they are meeting course standards, in order to spend additional time in a review session in which they may need more support. * Pre-Arranged Finals Week excuse forms will need to be completed by students and parents if IB News by Nanci Morse Service Learning Shoulder-to-Shoulder is a program that takes students to places in need both inside the U.S. and outside for service learning. This sounds like a great opportunity to fulfill Community Service or CAS hours or to base a Personal Project on. Have a look: IB DP News Students' IB exam scores will be available on July 6 at Students have been given their session number, personal code, and PIN, which are needed to access their information.

6 T iger Times V olume 1, I s s u e 1 P a ge 6 Retirees: Gretchen Nies During her 27 year career at SHS, Ms. Nies has served as a PE, science, student council and health teacher where she was named teacher of the year twice!. More recently she s led SHS as the athletic director, and assistant principal. On the field and court, she s coached volleyball, basketball, and track. A one time Colorado Athletic Director of the year, Metro League Hall of Famer, Summit Athena Award winner and Administrator of the Year for Summit Schools, Gretchen will be sorely missed at SHS. Her ability to organize, mobilize and inspire have been unparalleled. Tom Dickey Mr. Dickey has supported kids in the gym, as an assistant principal at SMS and on the field for 24 years as a Summit Tiger, 13 of those as head coach of our football team. In 1997, the Tigers went to the state semifinals under his leadership. When not at SHS, Tom can be found donning official s stripes as a basketball referee or on the river enjoying white water adventures. Tom will be delivering the commencement address this Spring supporting a career filled with student connections. Terri Vantiger Ms. Vantiger is wrapping up her 29th year in education at SHS as the Culinary Arts teacher and recent recipient of the Flame of Achievement Award for a lifetime of service dedicated to supporting students in culinary arts. A member of the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation, Summit County Restaurant Association and the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Ms. Vantiger earned Pro Start Teacher of the Year in 2005 and Summit Foundation Outstanding Educator in Many students in the program have also been successful earning Pro Start Student of the Year and Colorado Teen Chef of the Year Awards. Cathie Hill Ms. Hill has been the voice of SHS for the past 13 years and SMS vocal leader for 6 years before that. As the director of the vocal music department, she s taught choir, public speaking, guitar, piano, and drama. Equally important, to the community s delight she s led SHS plays and musicals. Some of the more widely remembered include: Grease, Footloose, Seussical and Annie. Though Holiday tunes and Spring melodies have been Cathie s trademarks, the community continues to appreciate her involvement in community theatre and theatrical productions. Bob Bentson Bob has been working for Summit Schools since January 15th, He graduated from Boulder High in He still owns a house in Boulder on 4th and Arapaho, which they plan to move back to this summer. The house has been in Bob's family since Bob moved to Leadville in 1970 to work at the Climax mine, where he worked as a crusher mechanic. His plan was to work a summer and make some money and them head back to CU. He never left Leadville. He has worked, at least one shift, in every school in the district.
