2 Course Description Guide This booklet contains information concerning classes, credits, graduation requirements and much more. Students will use this book throughout their four years of high school to help them with their class scheduling.

3 Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2019 English- 4 credits Math- 4 credits (including Algebra II) Science- 3 credits (Physical, Biological & 1 Advanced Science) Social Studies- 3 credits (including World History, American History and American Government) Health-1/2 credit PE-1/2 credit ( 2 PE classes or 2 seasons of sport or band) Financial Literacy- (met through Government course) Fine Arts- 1 credit Electives- 3.5 credits On-Line Learning- 1 credit» Total of 21 credits for Graduation

4 Standardized Assessments Required for Graduation Earn a cumulative passing score of 18 on the seven end-of-course exams (Algebra, Math I, Physical Science, American History, American Government, English 1 and English II) OR Earn a remediation-free score on a nationally recognized exam, such as the ACT or SAT OR Earn a State Board of Education approved industryrecognized credential or a state-issued license for practice in career

5 Honors Diploma College Preparatory Curriculum Must meet at least seven of the following eight criteria: 1. 4 Units of English 2. 4 Units of Math, including Algebra I, II and Geometry 3. 4 Units of Science, including Physics and Chemistry 4. 4 Units of Social Studies 5. 3 Units of World Language or 2 units each of two World Languages 6. 1 Unit of Fine Arts grade point average 8. Minimum score of 27 ACT, 1210 SAT (not including Writing portion) Career/Technical Must meet at least six of the following seven criteria: 1. 4 units of English 2. 4 units of Math, including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II 3. 4 units of Science, including Physics and Chemistry 4. 4 units of Social Studies 5. 4 units in Career/Technical Education GPA ACT, 1210 Sat

6 Athletic Eligibility To maintain student athletic eligibility at the high school and collegiate levels requires careful planning beginning in 9 th grade To be athletically eligible, refer to the Course Description Guide or contact the Athletic Director OHSAA requirements - students must be passing 5 half credit classes each quarter NCAA requirements Specific courses, GPA and ACT/SAT scores (highly rigorous curriculum)

7 Honors Courses Honors courses are weighted Honors courses are available in most subject areas Honors courses have a more rigorous curriculum and are intended for academically serious students Honors students must possess a strong work ethic, as they will not receive remediation Honors students may even be asked to participate in an assessment if there is any question as to the student s eligibility for a course.

9 Academic Assistance Freshman students are encouraged to have a study hall each semester, and even have the option of having two study halls each semester. Study hall is held in the Cafeteria, but students have the option of studying in the Library, using computers and other resources, or even in a Learning Lab for more personal attention. Homework Assistance Center is available in the evenings at WHS

10 The Scheduling Process 1. Letter with appointments Mailed home with recommendation sheet 2. Recommendation sheet Completed by 8 th grade teachers to help you in the selection of your core academic classes Questions about academic recommendation contact 8 th grade subject teacher 3. Appointment with Counselor Bring completed Course Selection Worksheet to submit. Student will register for classes with High School Counselor on either, February 17th or 18 th, in the Guidance Office. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to attend, however it is not required.
