2 About Ravinia Festival s REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs connect music to thousands of children and families around Chicago each year. One of Ravinia s signature education programs is the Ravinia Lawndale Family Music School which brings families together in Lawndale around musical experiences. The Family Music School provides access to the arts and opportunities for cultural enrichment, to this underserved west-side community, through high-quality music instruction and performances. Ravinia provides free lessons in piano, guitar, violin and choral performance, with the cooperation of the Chicago Park District, at four park locations. The Ravinia Lawndale Family Music School students perform regularly around Chicago and at Ravinia. Residents also enjoy free classical concerts in Lawndale and receive free lawn passes to attend concerts at Ravinia. The Family Music School offers: High-Quality music instruction in violin, guitar, piano and voice. Tuition-free multi-level instruction for children, parents and families. A nurturing environment for developing student talent and fostering an appreciation of music. The opportunity to study music and perform in ensembles with community and family members. Ravinia Festival is in residence at Douglas, Franklin, Homan Square and Piotrowski Parks, through the Chicago Park District s Arts Partners in Residence Program, which unites artists and communities in Chicago s parks.

4 Family Music School Students will progress through a series of programs and classes that will allow them to develop their musical abilities as they create a life-long connection to music. Preparatory Program (6-12yrs old; Pre-requisite for Family Programs) A pre-requisite for instrumental or choral ensemble lessons, children ages 6-12 internalize musical concepts, (pitch, rhythm, melody) and develop an enjoyment of music through singing, movement and rhythmic activities. Children ages 6-8 are required to take 1 year of Prep I (Music concepts and enjoyment). Children ages 8-12 are required to take 1 semester of Prep II (Music fundamentals). Family Instrumental Program (8yrs-Adult; Pre-requisite for Conservatory) Families and community members play music together as they learn the fundamentals of an instrument in an ensemble. Through a shared repertoire of familiar pieces, students will learn simple songs that they can perform with family members. Students ages 8-adult can learn the guitar, violin or piano in an ensemble. Students will progress through a series of classes in this 4-year program that allows any community member the opportunity to learn basic technique, improve musicianship and develop proficiency in an instrument. Students may not take more than one instrument at a time, but can take an instrument and be in choir. Family Choral Program (8yrs-Adult) Children, adults and families learn the fundamentals of singing. Through a shared repertoire of familiar songs, students will learn simple pieces that they can perform with community and family members. Through several levels of choral ensembles, students can learn and develop technique as they become performing musicians. Choral training is enhanced as members from the choirs combine to form a community choir. The Ravinia Lawndale Community Choir is the performing ensemble of the Family Choral Program. Conservatory (Advanced Students) Admitted by audition, students participate in small group classes where they cultivate the fundamentals learned in the Family Instrumental and Choral Programs and become performing musicians as they develop a life-long connection to music.

5 Recitals: Recitals are scheduled for the end of each term and are a way for students to showcase what they have learned to their families and the community. Concerts in Lawndale: Live performance by guest artists is an essential part of the learning experience. Its a time when the community can come together and enjoy listening to up and coming stars in their area of study. Ravinia Concerts: Learning experiences are enhanced when students attend classical concerts by prominent performing artists in the pavilion at Ravinia.

8 Student Agreement As a participant in the Family Music School students agree to: Respect your teacher and fellow students Attend each lesson, special concert and recital Practice throughout the week Arrive early and prepared for your lesson Care for your instrument Obey the rules and policies of the Family Music School

9 Parent Support Parents/guardians agree to support your child s involvement by: Attending orientation and mandatory parent meetings Bringing your child on time each week to lesson Attending lessons, recitals and special concerts (children under 11 yrs must be accompanied during classes) Encouraging your child to practice and reach musical goals Ensuring instrument upkeep Volunteering to help the Family Music School once per term
