2 Portland Names Pritchard Interim Head Coach Kevin Pritchard, who has served as Director of Player Personnel since August, was named interim head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers on March 2. He replaced Maurice Cheeks, who was relieved of his coaching duties the same day. We made this change in order to evaluate the entire roster and to put the franchise in the best position as we had towards the draft and free agency, said Trail Blazers General Manager John Nash. We appreciate all of Maurice s efforts during this difficult time and wish him well in the future. Pritchard becomes the eleventh head coach in the franchise s 35 seasons and the second to serve in an interim position. Before joining the Trail Blazers organization last summer, the 37-year-old Pritchard served for a year and a half as a scout with the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to that, he was with the Kansas City Knights of the American Basketball Association. There he served as the team s general manager, head coach and director of player personnel. In , he led the Knights to the ABA championship. He was selected in the second round (34th pick overall) in the 1990 NBA Draft by Golden State. In addition to the Warriors, he also played for Boston, Philadelphia, Miami and Washington in the NBA. Pritchard also played in Spain, Italy, Germany and in the Continental Basketball Association. Pritchard was a standout basketball player at the University of Kansas where he was an All-Big 8 selection his senior year and was a starter in 129 of his 139 collegiate games over four seasons. In addition to all-conference honors, he was a three-time All-Big 8 Academic Team selection. Averaging 12.2 points during his career with the Jayhawks, he ranks among the school s all-time top 10 in scoring, assists, steals and three-pointers. Cheeks became the Trail Blazers 10th head coach on June 27, 2001, after serving seven seasons as an assistant at Philadelphia, four of those under Larry Brown. His 162 victories ranks fourth on the Trail Blazers alltime head coaching chart. In three-plus seasons with Portland, Cheeks led the club to the playoffs twice. His team finished and took a red-hot Dallas Mavericks team to seven games in the Western Conference playoffs first round. TRAIL BLAZERS COACHING RECORDS REGULAR SEASON PLAYOFFS Yrs. G W L Pct. Portland 90, New Orleans Sunday, April 10, New Orleans Arena A bunch of nasty streaks were exorcized in New Orleans Sunday when the Trail Blazers downed the Hornets, The victory broke Portland s season-longest losing streaks---seven straight overall and 10 in a row on the road... It was only the second road win over a Western Conference team... Before New Orleans, the Blazers had dropped 21 in a row on the road to teams from the west after opening the season with a victory at Golden State... It was the first victory away from the Rose Garden this season over a Southwest Division team and it broke a four-game Hornets winning streak in the series... Shareef Abdur-Rahim continued his strong play for the Trail Blazers, posting his second straight double-double with game highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds... Damon Stoudamire, fighting off the effects of a bruised shoulder suffered late in Friday s game with Sacramento, gutted it out for 19 points and a team-high 9 assists in 37 minutes... Ruben Patterson added 16 points and Travis Outlaw continued his strong play off the bench with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots... Outlaw s slam dunk with 6:20 left in the second quarter wiped out New Orleans last lead of the game... The Blazers, Up by six entering the third quarter, went on a 14-2 run midway through the third stanza then held off a Hornet rally in the fourth to get their first road victory since Feb. 14 at Charlotte... 4 75. Sacramento 119, Portland Friday, April 8, The Rose Garden The game lived up to its advanced billing: Another high-scoring shoot-out... The Trail Blazers shot 55% for the game, had four players with 20 or more points for the first time this season and raced to a lead after one quarter... But the inability to keep the Sacramento Kings from rebounding their own misses took a big toll and the Blazers went down, , for their seventh straight loss, their 14th in the last 15 games and their fifth in a row at home... The setback, which gave the Kings the season s series three games to one, dropped the Blazers into a tie with Utah for last place in the Northwest Division... Darius Miles, back in action after missing three games with a bruised shoulder, scored 23 points to match Shareef Abdur-Rahim for team honors... Miles, making 8 of 15 field goals and all seven free throws, sparked a surge that helped Portland jump to a halftime lead... Abdur-Rahim added 13 rebounds to his 23 points for his 12th double-double, while Sebastian Telfair contributed 21 points and Ruben Patterson Joel Przybilla gathered in 15 rebounds to give him a total of 72 in the four-game series with the Kings... Sacramento s control of its own backboards--- the Kings had 21 offensive rebounds and 27 second chance points to 10 for the Blazers was a major factor... So too 10 triples on 22 attempts by the visitors to just 4 for 10 for Portland... Peja Stojakovic led all scorers in the game with 35 points including 6 baskets from three-point range T Final Att. FGs 3 Pts FTs O D Reb A PF St TO Bl Pts Sacramento Sacramento Portland ,539 Portland Golden State 104, Portland Wednesday, April 6, The Rose Garden After a flat performance in an 11-point loss at Utah the night before, the Trail Blazers turned in a high-energy and entertaining effort Wednesday before ultimately losing to the red-hot Golden State Warriors, , in the Rose Garden... It extended Portland s losing streak to six in a row and four straight in the Rose Garden... The Blazers have lost 13 of their last 14 and 19 of their last But it nearly came up a W as four Trail Blazers veterans ratcheted up their games... Damon Stoudamire, who posted the first Trail Blazers triple double (13 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) since the one he had four years ago to the day against the same Warriors team, saw his three-pointer bounce off the back of the rim as time expired, ending a spirited comeback on a down note... The Blazers started slow and had fallen behind by as many as 19 points by midway through the second quarter... But a spirited third quarter rally and inspired play by Ruben Patterson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Joel Przybilla and Stoudamire got the Blazers back in the game... A 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter earned Portland its first lead since the opening minutes, 92-91, with 6:42 left in the game... But Warriors regained the advantage and escaped with the two-point victory... Patterson was huge for the Blazers, matching his season-high with 27 points... Abdur-Rahim added 21 points and Przbyilla again dominated play in the middle with a season-high matching 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots... Stoudamire had his best game in weeks, including five steals with his triple-double... Baron Davis and Troy Murphy led the Warriors with 22 points each.. The Blazers lost despite shooting 48.7% for the game, but Golden State cashed in on 11 three-pointers to only three for Portland T Final Att. FGs 3 Pts FTs O D Reb A PF St TO Bl Pts Golden State Golden State Portland ,129 Portland Utah 90, Portland Tuesday, April 5, Delta Center, Salt Lake City Things looked good for the first 12 minutes but the wheels started coming off in the middle of the second quarter as the Trail Blazers lost their fifth straight game, a decision at the hands of Jazz in Utah... The loss, Portland s 10th straight on the road and the 16th in the last 18 games, closed the gap between the Blazers and Jazz to just one game for the NBA s fourth worst record... The Blazers, behind Damon Stoudamire and Joel Przybilla, moved out to a 10 point lead in the game s first six minutes and after one quarter were ahead, Utah gained the lead for good with 6:49 left in the second quarter and moved ahead at intermission... Portland scored a season-low 10 points, made just four field goals, shot 27 percent and turned the ball over eight times in the third quarter, falling behind Only a strong fourth quarter by Portland s reserves kept the game from becoming a bigger embarrassment... Joel Przybilla, who tallied 13 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 7 shots, shared team scoring honors with Sebastian Telfair and Travis Outlaw... FGs 3 Pts FTs O D Reb A PF St TO Bl Pts Portland Portland Utah ,443 Utah Denver 103, Portland Saturday, April 2, The Rose Garden A devastating 6:58 span of the fourth quarter turned an otherwise strong game against one of the West s top teams into a loss for the shorthanded Trail Blazers in the Rose Garden... Portland jumped to an early lead over the Denver Nuggets, a club battling for home court advantage in the upcoming playoffs, lost the lead then recovered to go ahead by three, with 8:08 remaining in the game... From there, the Nuggets launched a 14-0 run and Portland could never get inside six after that... During that drought the Blazers were 0 for 9 from the field and turned the ball over five times while the Nuggets were connecting on 7 of 10 from the field... Damon Stoudamire led all scorers with 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting and Shareef Abdur-Rahim, playing all but four seconds of the game, added Sebastian Telfair gave out a career-high 10 assists to go with 16 points for his first career double-double... But with Abdur-Rahim and Joel Przybilla, who grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, the only big men available for action, Portland s inside game suffered... Darius Miles and Theo Ratliff both were in street clothes nursing shoulder injuries and Zach Randolph, lost for the season, underwent knee surgery two days earlier... 5 TRAIL BLAZERS vs. SPURS DIGGING OUT THE SPURS... Portland wraps up a two-game incursion into Southwest Division territory Tuesday at One SBC Center in San Antonio (5:30 p.m., NewsRadio 750-KXL, MAGIA 1150 AM-Spanish Radio, KGW-TV)... The Trail Blazers are looking to extend their road winning streak to two in a row and at the same time capture the season series from the Spurs, a team that owns the NBA s second best record... The Blazers, who have struggled against San Antonio over the past five years, beat the Spurs in their last meeting on Jan. 24 in the Rose Garden, In the first clash of the season, also in the Rose Garden, Portland suffered its biggest loss ever to the Spurs, , so Tuesday s contest is the tiebreaker in this season s three-game series... The Blazers have won only three of their last 15 games with the Spurs who this time had season opponent highs 47 field goals and 34 assists... A bright spot in the game for Portland was the continued strong play of Darius Miles at small forward... He tallied a team-high 17 points in 33 minutes, making 7 of 14 from the field and his only three-pointer...the game also marked the return of Shareef Abdur-Rahim who contributed a double-double---14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in 31 minutes... Portland won despite not having its two top scorers--- Zach Randolph and Shareef Abdur-Rahim---in uniform and guard Derek Anderson out with a dental problem... The roster situation was compounded when Nick Van Exel was ejected four minutes into the third quarter by Steve Javie... But the Blazers showed early they meant business, making 14 of their first 17 shots and jumping to a lead after one quarter... After the Spurs came back and led by one at the half, 47-46, Portland reasserted itself and went ahead for good, on Richie Frahm s jumper with 4:50 left in the third stanza...
