Emory Sports Medicine, a division of the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center, provides services for professional, collegiate and high school athletes, including national powerhouse Georgia Tech. All Sports Medicine Center physicians, certified athletic trainers and physical therapists are specifically trained in sports medicine. All outpatient services are located at Executive Park and include physical therapy and cutting-edge imaging techniques to assist in the diagnosis of injury. Dougherty Jr., MD, FAAFP Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics With an emphasis in sports medicine and primary care, Dr. Dougherty treats a variety of musculoskeletal problems in athletes, particularly knee and shoulder ailments, as well as weekend warrior aches and pains. Dr. Dougherty received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed family practice residency training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, with world-renowned James Andrews, MD. During this time, Dr. Dougherty served as an assistant physician for Troy State University and Birmingham Southern University. He also cared for Paralympic athletes at the Olympic training center in Birmingham as well as for numerous NFL Europe players. Dr. Dougherty has published numerous articles and given talks on the topic of sports injuries and the care of the athlete. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He also has completed training in acupuncture and is a member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Dougherty currently serves as a team physician for Mount Vernon Presbyterian High School.

3 Spero G. Karas, MD Director, Emory Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Karas specialties include sports medicine, surgery of the shoulder and knee, and arthroscopy. Dr. Karas recently was recognized as one of America s Top Orthopaedic Doctors in the April 2007 issue of Men s Health magazine. His peers also recently inducted him into the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, a select, internationally recognized group of academic upper-extremity surgeons. Dr. Karas received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his Orthopaedic Residency at Duke University Medical Center. After residency, Dr. Karas completed a Shoulder and Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. While there, he served as associate team physician for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. After his fellowship, he served as chief of the Shoulder Service, varsity team physician and director of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at UNC at Chapel Hill. In addition to his academic roles at Emory, he serves as a consulting team physician for Emory University, Georgia Tech and Oglethorpe University athletics as well as a team physician for Mount Vernon Presbyterian High School. Sameh (Sam) A. Labib, MD, FRCSC Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Labib s areas of clinical interest include sports injuries and arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee and foot, joint cartilage repair of the knee and ankle, and reconstructive surgery of the knee and foot, including total ankle replacement. Dr. Labib earned his medical degree with honors from Ain-Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, in He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in 1991, followed by a Sports Medicine Surgery Fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Labib joined the staff of Emory University School of Medicine and EMORY HEALTHCARE in 1999 after having completed a Foot and Ankle Surgery Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Labib is fluent in Arabic and French and has lectured both nationally and internationally at orthopaedic meetings. Dr. Labib s peers recognized him as one of Atlanta s Top Sports Medicine Doctors (Atlanta Magazine, 2001). Dr. Karas is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and belongs to numerous societies, including the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Karas is the author of more than 150 publications, presentations and demonstrational videos, and has presented his research at numerous institutions throughout the U.S., Europe and the Pacific Rim.

4 Kenneth R. Mautner, MD Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Dr. Mautner came to Emory in 2004 after completing his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. He majored in biology and psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, and received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Emory University School of Medicine, where he was selected as Resident of the Year in He served as chief resident during the same period. Dr. Mautner is active in such professional organizations as the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American College of Sports Medicine and the International Spinal Injection Society. Dr. Mautner trained in evaluating and using computerbased neuropsychological testing at the world-renowned Sports Concussion Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is the first sports medicine doctor in the Atlanta area to incorporate this state-of-the-art testing into his routine evaluation of sports concussions. Dr. Mautner sees a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injury patients and has a special interest in sports-related spine injuries and hip and groin problems in athletes. He currently serves as head team physician for Agnes Scott College and a team physician for Emory University athletics. Brandon Mines, MD Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics Dr. Mines is board certified in both Family Practice and Sports Medicine. He focuses his clinical research on sports injuries and conditions of the ankle, foot, knee, wrist and upper extremities. Dr. Mines received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in He completed a residency at St. Luke s Medical Center in Milwaukee in 2001 and a fellowship at the University of California Medical Center in Los Angeles in Since then, he has practiced at Emory. Dr. Mines is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. 5 John Xerogeanes, MD Chief of the Emory Sports Medicine Center Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Xerogeanes, or Dr. X as he s known by his staff and patients, is chief of Sports Medicine at the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center. He also is head orthopaedist and team physician for Emory University, Georgia Tech and Agnes Scott College. In addition to Dr. Xerogeanes work with college-level athletes, he also cares for many professional, high school and recreational athletes. After earning his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of California Davis and his medical degree from Emory University, Dr. Xerogeanes completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He then moved to Vail, Colorado, where he completed a fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic, specializing in Sports Medicine/Knee and Shoulder Surgery. As a member of a number of professional societies and organizations, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Xerogeanes has contributed to many textbooks and has received numerous research awards. His research has been published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Journal of Trauma and Annals of Biomedical Engineering. In addition to his many publications, he has been a visiting lecturer at numerous institutions on four continents. Dr. Xerogeanes work also has been featured on CNN, ESPN and network television news. Forrest Q. Pecha, MS, ATC, CSCS, OTC Pecha received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, where he swam and played lacrosse and rugby. After completing an internship at Lands End in corporate wellness, he worked in the field of health and fitness for five years before going back to graduate school at Illinois State University. He finished his master s degree in heath physical education and recreation under the course work for Athletic Training and Exercise Physiology. Pecha won the JORNDT Research Award, with Professor David Thomas, and the Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award for the College of Applied Science and Technology. After leaving Illinois State, Pecha completed a sixmonth Research Internship in Biomechanics at the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation in Vail, Colorado, where he was a physician extender and later a certified athletic trainer under Richard Steadman, MD. Three years later, Pecha took the position of head certified athletic trainer for the United States Men s Alpine Ski Team. He spent four years with the team and was able to participate in the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, and two World Championship competitions. Pecha joined Emory in 2004 as clinical coordinator and director of Athletic Training Services. He served as the assistant medical director/head athletic trainer for the Tour de Georgia cycling races in 2005, 2006 and 2007, as the liaison to the United States National Soccer teams for athletic training coverage.
