1 Performers of the Week Thursday, July 26, 2012 Week #1: November 11, 2008 Parker Heaps - Ripon College Senior - West Bend, Wis./West Heaps helped the Red Hawks defeat Beloit in Friday s dual, hosted by Ripon. He was the only Ripon men s swimmer to win a pair of events, taking first-place in the 1650 freestyle and 400 IM with times of 4:55.15 and 18:50.02, respectively. His 1650 freestyle time was nearly three minutes better than the second-place swimmer. Hayley Vatch - Lawrence University Senior - Elmhurst, Ill./York Vatch won two events and placed fourth in another to lead Lawrence in its dual meet with UW-River Falls this past Saturday. Vatch won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:28.30 and also captured the 1,000 freestyle in 11:00.95, and those are the top times in the Midwest Conference in those events. Vatch also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1: Week #2: November 18, 2008 Cyrus Mistry - Grinnell College Sophomore - West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley Mistry posted a pair of wins in the Pioneers double dual sweep of Lake Forest College and the University of Chicago on Saturday. He was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.00) and 200 breaststroke (2:12.64). He also swam on the 200 medley relay team that finished third in 1: Morgan Bober - Grinnell College Freshman - Greensboro, N.C./American Hebrew Bober was in on four victories in a double dual sweep of Lake Forest College and the University of Chicago on Saturday. She won individual titles in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.04), 200 breaststroke (2:33.96) and 200 individual medley (2:20.18), plus swam on the first-place 200 medley relay (1:57.64). Week #3: November 25, 2008 Peter Brengel - Lawrence University Freshman - Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette Brengel showed off his versatility at the Lawrence Triangular on
2 Saturday. Brengel went the distance to win the 500-yard freestyle in 5:11.56 and then sprinted to a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in seconds. Led by Brengel, the Vikings won both dual meets. Lawrence defeated Ripon and beat Marquette Rebecca Hamlyn - Lawrence University Sophomore - Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills Hamlyn won two events to lead Lawrence to pair of dual meet victories on Saturday at the Lawrence Triangular. Hamlyn was first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2: She also won the 100 butterfly in 1: Hamlyn s time in the 100 butterfly is the fastest in the league this season, and the 200 IM time ranks third. Lawrence defeated Ripon and beat Marquette Week #4: December 9, 2008 Michael Mackin - Lake Forest College Sophomore - Berwyn, Ill./Fenwick Mackin reached the finals in the 100- and 200-backstroke at the highly-competitive TYR/CollegeSwimming.com Classic at Carthage College last weekend. He finished seventh in the 100-backstroke in seconds, the fastest time in the conference so far this season. He also completed the 200-backstroke in 2:01.65, the second-best mark in the league, and placed ninth. In addition, Mackin advanced to the consolation finals in the 200-freestyle (1:51.07), finished the 200-IM in 2:07.59, and led off the 400-freestyle relay in seconds. Both freestyle times rank among the top five in the conference. Jordan Barclay - Carroll University Freshman - Renton,Wash./Kentridge In addition to making her mark at the UW-River Falls Invitational over the weekend, Barclay etched her name into the Pioneers record book, twice.barclay won the 200 IM with a school-record time of 2:11.91 (shattering the mark of 2:15.63 set by Sandy Krueger in Feb. of 2001) then finished second in the 400 IM with another recordbreaking time of 4:44.11 (also shattering the mark of 4:50.53 by Krueger in Dec. of 1997). Week #5: January 13, 2009 Andrew Wright - Monmouth College Freshman - Quincy, Ill./Quincy Wright posted a personal-best after a month-long layoff as the Fighting Scots sank Lindenwood last weekend Competing for the first time since Dec. 6, Wright won two events and swam a leg on a third-place relay. The freshman won the 100-yard freestyle with a personal-best time (51.25) and touched first in the 200-
3 freestyle (1:52.19). In the opening race, Wright swam the anchor leg on the Scots 400- medley relay (4:02.50). Rachel Buckham - Monmouth College Freshman - Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Sturgeon Bay Buckham started the New Year off with a bang. In the Fighting Scots first meet since Dec. 6, Buckham was perfect in her three events. She touched first in the 200-yard backstroke while swimming the third fastest time in the conference this season (2:24.59). The talented freshman also placed first in the freestyle (21:03.58) and swam the third leg on the winning 400- freestyle relay (4:08.12). The Scots women defeated Lindenwood last weekend Week #6: January 20, 2009 Peter Brengel - Lawrence University Freshman - Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette Brengel broke the Lawrence record in the 100-yard backstroke and took second in the event at the tough University of Chicago Invitational. His time of seconds, the fastest in the Midwest Conference this season, broke the Lawrence record of set by Steve Vander Naalt in Brengel also placed sixth in the 200 backstroke in 2: He also swam on the 200 medley relay team, which was fourth, and the 400 medley relay team, which placed fifth. Lawrence took fifth in the team standings. Week #7: January 27, 2009 Valerie Stimac - Grinnell College Senior - Eagle River, Ark./Chugiak Stimac was a triple winner at the Grinnell Invitational over the weekend, taking first in the 200-yard IM (2:13.07), 100 freestyle (54.37) and as part of the 400 medley relay (4:17.92) while helping the Pioneer women finish second in the team standings. She also swam to a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle (26.14) and as part of the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays (1:44.67 and 1:56.40, respectively). On top of that, Stimac a part of the third-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:48.47) and was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:01.85). Tom Pederson - Monmouth College Sophomore - Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick Pederson picked up a pair of first-place finishes in Saturday s double-dual meet with Ripon and Coe colleges. The sophomore swam a season-best to win the 100-yard freestyle. He also swam the anchor leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1: The Scots defeated Ripon and bested
4 Coe Emily Watts Lake Forest College Freshman Danville, Ind./Danville Community Watts helped lead Lake Forest to a double-dual meet victory over visiting Carroll and Lawrence. Watts won the 50-meter freestyle in seconds and the 100-meter freestyle in 1: The Foresters trailed both opponents going into the final event and Watts gave the home team a significant lead on the first leg of the victory-clinching 200-freestyle relay. Week #8: February 3, 2009 Thomas Lankiewicz - Grinnell College Freshman - Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lankiewicz showed his versatility during a busy weekend with strong home performances against Iowa Conference opponents Coe College and Luther College. Against Luther on Saturday, he won the 200- yard IM in 2:03.08 and added runner-up finishes in the 500 freestyle in 5:02.76 and as part of the 400 freestyle relay team. His 200 IM time is tops in the conference this season. A day earlier against Coe, he claimed the 200 backstroke in 2:05.41 and was second in the 200 butterfly in 2: He was also part of the runner-up 200 freestyle relay team.
