1 70 Nine Duke players have won the National Player of the Year award, starting with Dick Groat in Since Groat s initial honor, Art Heyman (1963), Johnny Dawkins (1986), Danny Ferry (1989), Christian Laettner (1992), Elton Brand (1999), Shane Battier (2001), Jason Williams (2001 and 2002) and J.J. Redick (2005 and 2006) have followed as National Players of the Year. Since 1986, Duke is one of just two schools in the nation with multiple National Player of the Year winners by AP, NABC, Naismith, UPI, USBWA and Wooden (the Blue Devils have seven such honorees and Kansas has three). Mike Krzyzewski has mentored more National Player of the Year winners than any coach in college basketball history. Five Blue Devils have won the Wooden Award under Krzyzewski, a figure more than twice as high as any other coach (Dean Smith and Lou Carnessecca had two Wooden winners each). Coach K has seen seven of his players win the Naismith Award. John Wooden and Bob Knight rank second on the Naismith list with two winners apiece. Four different Duke players in the past eight seasons have earned the country s top honor. In 2002, Williams became one of just seven players in history to repeat as National Player of the Year. J.J. Redick repeated as National Player of the Year in Williams and Redick joined an elite list that includes Ralph Sampson, David Thompson, Bill Walton, Lew Alcindor, Jerry Lucas and Oscar Robertson as repeat winners. 6 Duke has dominated the National Defensive Player of the Year award since its inception in Six different Blue Devils have won the prestigious award: Tommy Amaker (1987), Billy King (1988), Grant Hill (1993), Steve Wojciechowski (1998), Shane Battier (1999, 2000, 2001) and Shelden Williams (2005 and 2006). Of the eight schools that have had a National Defensive Player of the Year recipient, Duke is the only institution with multiple winners. Duke s six individual winners of the National Defensive Player of the Year award are five higher than the other seven schools to have obtained this honor. Mike Krzyzewski has coached six National Defensive Players of the Year, five more players than any other coach in college basketball history. In 2001, Shane Battier became just the third player in history to win a third National Defensive Player of the Year award, joining UNLV s Stacey Augmon and Wake Forest s Tim Duncan as the only players to be so honored. Duke senior forward Shelden Williams, who established the school s all-time blocked shots record, won the National Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season in The Forest Park, Okla., native joined Battier to become just the second Duke player to repeat as National Defensive Player of the Year. 9 78 Beginning with Bill Werber in 1930, 31 Duke players have earned All-America recognition. Duke s 18 consensus first team All- Americas, including a national-best eight in the past eight seasons, are tied for third in college basketball history with UCLA (immediately ahead are Kentucky with 20 and Notre Dame with 19). Under Mike Krzyzewski, 19 Blue Devils have earned All-America honors, including the duo of J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams, who were both consensus first team selections. In , Jason Williams, Mike Dunleavy and Carlos Boozer each earned All-America honors. That season marked the first time since 1992 that three Blue Devils earned All-America recognition in the same season (Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill accomplished that previously). Redick and Williams were both first team All-America selections in Shane Battier and Williams were both unanimous first team selections in With its Redick/ Williams and Battier/Williams duos, Duke is the only school in the nation to have two pairs of first team All-Americas in the history of the Associated Press voting. This impressive feat has been accomplished just nine times in the history of college basketball (the most recent two times by Duke). The words Duke and All-America have become synonymous in the past 21 years. Since 1986, Duke has produced 18 All-Americas (31 honors), more than any other school in the nation. Nine different Duke players (11 total honors) were named consensus first team All-America since 1990, six more than the next nearest schools (Arizona and Kentucky). Six different Blue Devils have been named consensus first team All-America in the past eight seasons.
