3 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS ITNW 2405: NETWORK ADMINISTRATION STUDENT EVALUATION COURSE EVALUATION A. Major exams will account for no more than 55% of the total grade B. Labs will account for no more than 10% of the total grade. C. Course Log Book will account for no more than 10% of the total grade. D. Final exam will account for no more than 25% of the total grade. INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION A. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate their instructor and the course content. B. The instructor will review and evaluate in terms of withdrawal rate. C. Final grades given will be reviewed in an effort to determine if a pattern of high or low grades exists. DEPARTMENT EVALUATION OF COURSE A. 4 GENERAL GOALS/OBJECTIVES BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS ITNW 2405: NETWORK ADMINISTRATION COURSE CONTENT Students will create and administer user accounts and groups, plan and setup network file systems, create effective file system security, and implement and administer network printing. SPECIFIC GOALS/OBJECTIVES 1. Students will work in teams to design and document server-based networks. 2. Students will successfully install network workstation and server operating systems. 3. Working as a team, students will successfully configure and maintain network services including DNS, FTP, , web, network applications, and printing on network servers. 4. Students will create and manage user accounts and groups; setup and administer permissions for files and folders; monitor and manage network security.

5 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS ITNW 2405: NETWORK ADMINISTRATION LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Students will work in teams to design and document server-based networks. Students must make at least a 70 on each network design documentation project and at least a 70 on the course log documentation project. 2. Students will successfully install network workstation and server operating systems. In the networking lab, students must successfully complete the installation process and have operational workstations and servers. 3. Working as a team, students will successfully configure and maintain network services including DNS, FTP, , web, network applications, and printing on network servers. Students working in teams will establish successful network operations in the networking lab using DNS, FTP, , web, network applications, and printing. 4. Students will create and manage user accounts and groups; setup and administer permissions for files and folders; monitor and manage network security. In the networking lab, students will create and manage a minimum of 3 accounts per student in groups decided on by the network design. Students will setup and administer permissions for files and folders for each account created. Students will monitor and manage network security for the networking lab servers.

Formerly ITNW 2401 and ITNW (4 SCH, 3 lecture, 2 lab) PREREQUISITES ITNW 1325 or approval of the division chair. TEXTBOOK OR COURSE MATERIAL INFORMATION Palmer: Hands-On Microsoft Windows Server 2008; Cengage. LAB REQUIREMENTS See schedule/as assigned. ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICY It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from a course if circumstances occur that could prevent the student from successfully completing that course. Students should notify instructor of decision to withdraw and must not expect nor assume the instructor will complete the paperwork for the student. The instructor will complete required paperwork only if the instructor decides to drop a student for cause. Failure to notify instructor of withdrawal could result in the student failing the course. Please note that changes in the Texas Education Code state that students enrolling for the first time in a Texas public institution of higher education in the fall of 2007 or after, will not be permitted to withdraw from more than a total of six courses (no minimum number of credit hours on each course) in which the student is officially enrolled during the student's period of undergraduate study at all such institutions (this includes any course a transfer student has dropped at another institution of higher education). 7 COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY All work assignments and tests are worth 100 points. Each category is given the following weight. Labs 10% Course Log Book 10% Exams 55% Final Exam 25% 100% Letter grade will be assigned as follows: 90%+ A 80%-89% B 70%-79% C 60%-69% D 0%-59% F MAKE-UP POLICY Make-up exams will be determined on a case-by-case basis provided that the student contacts the instructor before the next class meeting after a major exam has been given to the class. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students are expected to read the textbook and complete all lab assignments. Attendance is critical in this class in lecture and lab. Some group projects and labs require altering the software or equipment in ways that may prevent the lab conditions from being recreated after the class has moved on to a new project. Other classes utilize this lab so that setting up the project may not be possible outside of class. Students are also expected to take care of the equipment in the classroom. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD, DRINKS, OR UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS INTO THE CLASSROOM. PROJECTS, ASSIGNMENTS, PORTFOLIOS, SERVICE LEARNING, INTERNSHIPS, etc. Course Log: This course uses student group projects. Students must maintain and turn in at the end of the semester a course log book that includes the following sections: Weekly progress diary. Labs / Handouts Project descriptions. Network Diagrams. Baseline documentation. Server/Equipment Configuration Notes. Security Policy and System Documentation. Troubleshooting Notes. This course log counts as 10 points of your total course grade. Attendance and participation is critical for group projects. One point will be deducted from the 10 course log points for each lab day that you are not present and participating. One absence is excused and will not cause a deduction.

8 SCANS COMPETENCIES The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified competencies in the areas of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology; and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. If a lab is turned in late, student s grades are penalized. Students are required to use on-line help and the computers in lab. Students are encouraged to seek help from their classmates during lab and in the event they are absent and miss assignments and/or notes. 2. Course requires students to maintain and organize a project log book. Students will be asked to modify files and computer settings using appropriate software as outlined on a lab, project, or final exam. Students will be monitoring and correcting their performance in all of the labs and on all exams. Students are expected to select the proper software and hardware tools and devices, invoke them, and then ensure the work is meeting the expected outcomes. If the outcomes are not as expected, the student is expected to make the appropriate changes to achieve the outcome. Lectures and labs require students to read, write, and use mathematical skills. Students are expected to listen to the lecture, because not all information appears in the text. Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate in class discussions. Most labs require students to use their creative and problem-solving skills. The student must perceive the problem, find a way to get the data into the right form, so the expected output can be achieved. Students will be required to monitor their time, especially on labs, exams, and on the final. It is the student s responsibility to turn in their labs on time. The student is expected to be honest and do their own labs and exams. This is monitored!
