3 STUDENT EVALUATION BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS BUSG 2309 SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT COURSE EVALUATION A. Unit and special tests will account for no more than 30% of the total grade. B. Business Plan will account for no more than 40% of the total grade. C. Class participation will account for no more than 10% of the total grade. D. Final exam will account for no more than 20% of the total grade. INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION A. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate their instructor and the course content. B. The instructor will review and evaluate in terms of withdrawal rate. C. Final grades given will be reviewed in an effort to determine if a pattern of high or low grades exists. DEPARTMENT EVALUATION OF COURSE A. Faculty and the Division Chair will review student grades and withdrawal trends. B. 4 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS BUSG 2309 SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT GENERAL GOALS/OBJECTIVES COURSE CONTENT This course is intended to provide the student with a basic understanding of how to establish a small business which includes management, store operations, organization, financing, and general business operations. A. The student will describe important issues about small business. B. The student will be able to identify essential management skills required of a successful entrepreneur. C. The student will be able to prepare a business plan. SPECIFIC GOALS/OBJECTIVES The following list of specific goals will be addressed in the course. These goals are directly related to the performance objectives. (* Designates a CRUCIAL goal.) The student shall demonstrate his/her ability to: 1. Define an entrepreneur. 2. List the advantages and disadvantages of owning a small business. * 3. Describe various areas of consideration when starting a new business. 4. Discuss the cultural diversity factors of today's small business. * 5. Discuss and recognize the reasons and remedies for failure in the small firm. * 6. Compare the three forms of business ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation). 7. Define and discuss franchising as a form of small business ownership. 8. Discuss the evaluation process of buying an existing business. 9. List the advantages and disadvantages of buying an existing business. 10. Explain different methods for determining the value of a business. 11. Explain the value of and the steps needed to create the marketing plan. 12. Explain the value of and the steps needed to create the financial plan. 13. Describe various means of managing cash flow. 14. Discuss the various means of business forecasting and budgeting for the small firm.

5 * 15. Recognize and discuss various accounting procedures necessary for maintaining accounting records for the small business firm. * 16. Create a business plan. 17. Discuss the various pricing strategies and tactics for retailers, manufacturers, and service firms. 18. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of credit selling in a small business firm. 19. Explain techniques and activities of advertising and promotion used by a retail business. 20. Discuss ways of obtaining initial capital and credit for investment in a small firm. 21. List and discuss various means of debt financing in a small business firm. 22. Describe factors that affect the choice of location for a small firm. 23. Explain various purchasing and inventory control techniques necessary for the small firm. 24. Explain the value of and the steps needed to create the technology plan. 25. Discuss staffing and human relation aspects that accompany the management of a small business firm. 26. Explain the need to build a business culture. 27. Describe various methods to motivate employees in a small business.

6 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS BUSG 2309 SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (At the end of this course, the student will have a basic understanding of payroll for a small to medium business.) Measure: Demonstrate through question and answer the laws affecting business payroll. 1. The student will understand the opportunities available in the world of Small Business. This will be measured by the student taking and passing a written exam. 2. The student will understand what it takes to start a business from scratch or joining a business. This will be measured by the student taking and passing a written exam. 3. The student will learn how to develop a New Venture Business Plan. This will be measured by the student writing and turning in for grading a scaleddown business plan. 4. The student will learn how to manage growth of a small business. This will be measured by the student taking and passing a written exam. 5. The students will learn to assess a small business s accounting numbers and what they mean.

CIP (3 SCH, 3 lecture, 0 lab) PREREQUISITES (None) TEXTBOOK OR COURSE MATERIAL INFORMATION Longenecker: Small Business Management; Cengage L/S-W 17 th edition; Required course materials are available at the Brazosport College bookstore, on campus or online at A student of this institution is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college bookstore. The same textbook is/may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. LAB REQUIREMENTS (None) ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES Students will be dropped if they miss more than 20 % of the classes before the drop date. Tardiness and leaving early will count as part of an absence. Fall and Spring 15-week Semesters Class Meetings Maximum absences before being dropped One per week 2 Two per week 4 It is the student's responsibility to withdraw from a course if circumstances occur that could prevent the student from successfully completing that course. Students should notify instructor of decision to withdraw and must not expect nor assume the instructor will complete the paperwork for the student. The instructor will complete required paperwork only if the instructor decides to drop a student for cause. Failure to notify instructor of withdrawal could result in the student failing the course. Please note that changes in the Texas Education Code state that students enrolling for the first time in a Texas public institution of higher education in the fall of 2007 or after, will not be permitted to withdraw from more than a total of six courses (no minimum number of credit hours on each course) in which the student is officially enrolled during the student's period of undergraduate study at all such institutions (this includes any course a transfer student has dropped at another institution of higher education). 8 COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY The final grade for the student will be determined in the following manner: TESTING Unit and special tests 30% Business Plan 40% Class participation 10% Final exam 20% Total 100% The student will not be allowed references on tests or exams. The evaluations will be based on a 100% scale with penalty value being the percent of error. Satisfactory performance will be 60% on any activity. The total evaluation will be based on the percentages shown in the Course Evaluation section. MAKE-UP POLICY There is no make-up opportunity. Papers are due as assigned. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES The class will meet one night a week for three hours. Students are also expected to take care of the equipment in the classroom. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD, DRINKS, OR UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS INTO THE CLASSROOM. For a 3-hour course, students are expected to spend 6-9 hours a week outside of class preparing for the class. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate the course and the method of presentation at the end of the semester. PROJECTS, ASSIGNMENTS, PORTFOLIOS, SERVICE LEARNING, INTERNSHIPS, etc. Students will research and develop a business plan. SCANS COMPETENCIES The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified competencies in the areas of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology: and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This course is part of a program in which each of these competencies and skills are integrated. For application of specific SCANS competencies and skills in this course, see Addendum A.

9 ACADEMIC HONESTY Brazosport College assumes that students eligible to perform on the college level are familiar with the ordinary rules governing proper conduct including academic honesty.
