I m at my desk in London, and have 20 precious minutes on the phone with her. It s a bit like Supermarket Sweep, that Nineties gameshow in which contestants had 60 seconds to cram their trolleys with loot. The clock is ticking where to start with all the questions? There is so much I would like to know about Zara. As a nation, we are fascinated by her: Is Zara Becoming a Royal WAG? demands the Daily Mail; How To Get a Plunging Cleavage like Zara s, advises The Sun. We are alternately captivated and dismayed by her clothing choices. We love that she s attached to another sporting hero (in case you ve been down a rabbit hole for the last seven years, she s living with Mike Tindall, one of England s 2003 rugby world cupwinning heroes). We love that she curtsies every time she meets her grandmother. We loved the tongue-stud, the ill-fated romance with the jockey whose name we forget, the run-ins with the paparazzi, the fact that she is, at times, so royally unroyal. And we love that she is very, very good at her dangerous sport, and that she brings us glory on the world stage. We voted her Sports Personality of the Year in 2006, for goodness sake, and winced at her off-the-cuff acceptance speech, in which the word amizing featured countless times. And as the London Olympics approach, we are pinning more than her fair share of our hopes on her shoulders. So we know she s tough, she s rebellious, she s a hard-working professional. But what s going on with her and Mike? Does she call the Queen Granny? Does she understand the off-side rule? And does she secretly hanker after the royal title that her parents turned down on her behalf at birth? (I know I would.) Let s start with an easy one, I think, and ask her to tell me about her work with Musto. In case you re not a sailing, riding, shooting, outdoorsy type, Musto is a great Great British brand, founded by Olympic medal-winning sailor Keith Musto in 1965, and a stalwart supporter of our Olympic sailing and three day eventing teams. Zara has teamed up with them to design a seven-piece capsule collection of jackets, fleeces and sweatshirts, all featuring her eventing number, 176. Before talking to her, I google Zara Phillips Musto and find a behind-the-scenes video of her promotional shoot for the range, filmed on a beach in Devon: Zara clambering up a sand-dune with a ginormous stallion, then slithering down again with said horse perilously close to her heels; Zara and horse cantering through the waves; Zara sitting in a cave having her hair faffed with; Zara and horse peering into the camera lens through their respective fringes ( Who s in charge of making the horse look at me? bleats the photographer). Easy to mock, but she looks like a model with a capital M, with a floppy, eye-sweeping fringe that really suits her, and cheekbones you could crack walnuts on. Monica Porter visits and is mightily impressed. Photography by Arno As the old saying goes: you can always tell a Wykehamist, but you can t tell him much. And there s no denying it an education at Winchester College implies a certain intellectual superiority. It s understandable. For a start, Winchester was the very first of our great public schools, the original model and inspiration for all the rest. Compared to Winchester, even the venerable Eton is an upstart, for the latter wasn t established until 1440 nearly 60 years after William of Wykeham, the Bishop of Winchester, founded his ambitious educational institution in That s over six centuries of uninterrupted history in the highest echelons of English schooling. It could easily go to one s head. But of course the true source of the Wykehamists reputation for intellectual confidence is the cerebral nature of the school s atmosphere and teaching methods. Having recently spent a day in the company of some pupils, however, I can happily report that they wear their intellect lightly. The school was conceived as a place of education for 70 poor and needy scholars who would afterwards go on to New College Oxford also founded by William of Wykeham and mainly enter the priesthood. Many 14th-century priests had died from the plague and the bishop was anxious to replace them with highly qualified new recruits. Winchester, the one-time ancient capital of England, is today one of the country s most beautifully preserved medieval cities, steeped in royal history and magnificent architecture. It s no wonder that living and working in these surroundings is regarded as an integral part of a Wykehamist s education. The school s many buildings, old and new, are spread out over an extensive area but at the heart of the campus is the original set of medieval buildings, still used for their original purposes. Known as College, this ancient core remains home to Winchester s current 70 scholars, distinguished by their black gowns. They live in the 14th century Chambers, which enclose a picturesque courtyard, and eat in lofty College Hall, the original scholars dining room. The rest of the 600-odd pupils, the Commoners, are based in 10 boarding houses in adjacent streets. I visit the Headmaster in his elegant study: book-lined walls, roaring fire in the grate, comfortable armchairs. So far, so traditional. But Dr. Ralph Townsend, 56, is not your traditional English public school head. For one thing, he s Australian. His career has included stints as headmaster of the prestigious Sydney Grammar School and the co-ed Oundle School in Peterborough, as well as teaching posts at Eton and Abingdon. Since becoming headmaster of Winchester in 2005, he s ushered in major systemic changes. For example, the school has now largely abandoned A-levels in favour of Cambridge Pre-University exams, because, as he explains: We felt that the academic content of A-levels has been eroded over the years. (Or as we would say, they ve been dumbed down.) Our pupils weren t being sufficiently challenged. The Cambridge Pre-U system was deemed more appropriate as a third of Winchester s pupils go on to Oxbridge. Dr. Townsend is also reforming the school s scholarship and bursary structure, so as to allow a greater intake of boys from less privileged backgrounds. By 2010 all scholarship awards will be needs-tested. The scholars are the powerhouse, he says. They set the pace for the whole school. Over the next 10 years we d like 60 per cent of them to come from socio-economic backgrounds which prevent them being here without financial help. Currently 30 per cent benefit from some level of financial aid with the school s fees, which now stand at 27,870 per year for boarders and 26,475 for day pupils. I suggest that perhaps Dr. Townsend s Australian mentality accounts for his bold sweeping aside of timeworn methods. He doesn t disagree. While it s a great privilege to contribute to a school as ancient and distinctive as Winchester, he remarks, I m more prepared to be critical of it. Australians are not easily intimidated by institutions. That s why some of the Queen s private secretaries have been Australian they respect tradition but tend to say what they think, which has made them useful when serving the Establishment. Winchester shares a close historical bond with Eton, but each school stands on its own merits. With 680 boys, we re half the size of Eton, he says. Ours is a more intimate school, with a very careful admissions keen and eager wykehamists enjoy intellectual flexibility, debate and discussion during class There s no denying it an education at winchester college implies a certain intellectual superiority TRADITION policy. We assess boys not just on their academic ability but for their suitability to the intellectual atmosphere of the school. And that s the nub of it. What sets Winchester apart from every other great Public school is its commitment to creating a genuinely intellectual community in which pupils embrace learning for its own sake, not just to pass exams. We are not as Establishment as some other schools, adds Dr. Townsend. We breed more free-thinkers. They do this primarily through the school s unique tradition of Division classes. Extending throughout the five years of study at Winchester, these are daily classes in a wide range of subjects including philosophy, ethics, religion, history and literature designed to encourage discussion, analytical thinking and love of learning. The classes involve written tasks and presentations, but do not lead to exams. Div, as they call it, requires Winchester schoolmasters (or dons ) to be knowledgeable in many areas and continue to educate themselves throughout their careers. This all dates back to the late 19th century when the concept of the polymath schoolmaster one who is broadly educated across the disciplines was introduced to the school by its then Headmaster, Dr Burge, as a defence against the narrow classical curriculum then followed. I attend a Div class for a group of third year boys studying for their GCSEs. It is held at Flint Court, a Victorian wing of the school, and the Div Don taking the lesson is history teacher Philip Nash. We jump around in this class, he explains at the start (meaning in terms of the topics discussed). The other day we did the Napoleonic Wars and things got very heated indeed. Today we re talking about the Second World War and whether Britain should have made peace with Germany in The aim is to make them think, develop debating skills and apply sound logical arguments. Mr. Nash is eager and good-natured. He draws the boys out, probing their enquiring minds, and together they thrash out the pros and cons of the case for peace. I d quite like to chip in on this rousing subject, but instead I study the 16 attentive boys sitting along three sides of the big room filled with winter sunshine.
