1 Course/Subject: Social Networking for Careers Grade: 9 th, 10 th, 11 th & 12 th Enduring Understanding Communication utilized in the proper platform and format is a necessary tool to for individuals to network for career opportunities. Social Media has become a vital part in networking. Proper social media communication skills are necessary to enhance and promote a candidate in today s job market. Proper Social networking skills will enable students to have the ability to impact personal goals by using digital and social media platforms to develop communication skills. Essential Question How do we use social media as a means of communication for career networking? How do we properly utilize social media platforms to their fullest potential in order to advance our career goals and network to gain the appropriate employment? How do we become proficient in communication through social media platforms? Assessments Assessments used before, during and after instruction: diagnostic, benchmark, formative, summative. Ongoing assessment utilized to evaluate daily postings and discussion question for understanding. Transfer Task for Social Networking for Careers: The students will participate in real time communication via social media platforms. Students will complete lessons having a reading, writing and computer component that reinforce curriculum by applying topics to real-life scenarios and discussion with various people in their chosen field of study. Students will network through the utilization of social media sites.
2 Month: September Class Web Site, discussion posts, and student profile. Student , creation of an Navigation of class website, creation of new pages, discussion posts, proper post expectations, etc. -set up, creation of , sending, with, w/o attachments, reading , etc. Google account and Outlook. Students respond to teacher website invitation and creation of profile. Assessment- create an , attachments, copy and respond in proper manner. Google Docs, Google Apps, Google+ Wiki Page (Web Site) - procedures, discussion, posts, and profile. Communication methods via social media tools. Appropriate vs. Inappropriate Web 2.0-evolution of internet, functions and features Standards: B, A, M, T Students will be able to collaboratively utilize Google Docs as a shared tool for the creation of documents, presentations, surveys, and data collection. Introduction to Google+ and various Google Apps. Students will be able to create a Wiki/Website, monitor and respond to discussion posts and a daily basis. Student will be able to create their own, pages for inclusion of class site. Google Docs assessment-react and respond assessment on shared Class Google Doc. Whole class discussion utilizing a shared Google Docs. Way Back web site evaluation-comparison of early website version to present day. Web 2.0 Graded Assessment of vocabulary through website.
3 Month: October Web 2.0-evolution of internet, functions and features with Web 2.0- define various terms related to Web 2.0, networking, communications, history of internet and Web 2.0 capabilities, etc. View Shift Happens 6.0 Historical perspective of social media and impact on our methods of communication. Webpage vocabulary page Students will be able to utilize collaborative technologies in order to receive, react to and generate information via social media sites, class wiki and Google Docs. Students will be able to explain the progression of new means of communication through Web 2.0 tools. Research vocabulary terms; create a webpage within class website, as a resource using history, definitions, inventor, etc. Add page to navigation on site. Summative Assessment in the form of an online quiz on Web 2.0 vocabulary. Alexa site assignment-analysis of websites and attributes that contribute to their popularity. Discussion Posts involving articles, movies clips, infographics, etc. Student daily responses will be ongoing throughout the year and graded according to class protocol. Formative and summative assessment on terminology. Summative assessment on creation of page and correct navigation on page. Google + and creation of Circles. Posting comments on Google+ and adding contacts to class circles. View posts other various members in industry, technology, entertainment, sports, etc. for communication in social media. Standards: L, B, C, D, E, Evaluation of complete and accurate circles of contacts.
4 Month: November New role of social media communication in business and career networking. Business uses of social media, public relations, product promotion, customer feedback, and customer relations, etc. Microblogging: uses, history, profiles. Microblogging guidelines and etiquette. Microblogging proper writing skills. Students will be able to create the correct format citations using website, Tweets, blog, and other Web 2.0 means of communication. Online publications are cited differently from print publications. Students will understand the plagiarism and social media policies of businesses and colleges. Creation of their own social media policy with consequences for inappropriate issues. Creation of Twitter profile, following required number of members from each assigned industry and school appropriate student choice. Proper microblogging uses, business uses, customer communication options. Acceptable Twitter communication tools. Communication with prominent persons in career choice industries, armed forces, educational institutions. Summative assessment utilizing rubric graded projects. Digital Citizenship Assignment- Online research of business and college social media and plagiarism policies. Creation of profile, following the required business, education, technology, entertainment leaders, proper use of hashtags, and communication formats. Twitter discussion assignment. Twitter case study evaluation. Microblogging communication will be an ongoing activity throughout the school year. Student ongoing communication with those they selected in their desired fields and those required industries and institutions. Video conference-communication skills lesson. Evaluation of student engagement with specialist. Video conferencing with social media specialist. Standards: L, C, O, S, Q, T, U, V, W
5 Month: December Blog creation, content, proper usage, appropriate response, etc. Blogger profile, feeds, Google +, Navigation Bar, URL feeds, blog settings, etc. Teacher assessment by means of graded site based upon requirements stated in rubric. Adding value to posts in microblogging and blogging sites. Enhancements to blog-use of Settings Tab, Layout, Gadgets, Archive, Hangouts, RSS feeds, Navigation tool bars, etc. Online tools to utilize for internet communication. Standards: B, D, S, W, X Students will be able to utilize online sites that offer enhancements in communication on social media sites. Students will be able to utilize videos, shortened web address sites, etc. in order to effectively communicate in micro blogs and other forms of social media communication. (bitly.com, Vine, etc.) Students will be able to utilize outbound links and reciprocal links, Meta Tags, etc. YouTube, video addition to posts and creation of videos for effective promotion. Students ability to utilize online tools to be included in various means of social media communication. Blog internet search and evaluation assignment. Ongoing evaluation of class website discussion posts. Microblog and blog posts. Blog vocabulary quiz. Blog self-assessment & teacher evaluation.
6 Month: January Microblogging practices. Blogging- Topic varied discussion Business uses for social media, exploration of campaigns and communication usage. Blogging proper writing skills. Students will be able to evaluate real life microblogging sites and their anticipated results. Students will be able to communicate through their blogs regarding various topics in the networking world of social media. Students, on ongoing basis students will evaluate companies, educational institutions, sports teams, entertainment social media communication. Continuing evaluation of Twitter posts. Twitter ad campaign assignment. Evaluate and compare social media ad campaigns. Ongoing evaluation of blog posts. Group Google Doc collaboration evaluation of successful results of promotional campaigns assignment. Standards: A, D, O, , W
7 Month: February Evaluation- purpose, content, and categories of blogs. Blog Analytics-success of blog effectiveness Digital Citizenship Students will be able to determine the effectives of a blog based on activity and content. Students will be able to create social media polices and guidelines for careers and higher education. Ongoing evaluation of student social media usage and discussion based on actual business and college social media activity. Blog Internet research and evaluation assignment. Digital citizen research project. Instagram-account creation, profile and usage. Standards: B, O, S, T Students will be able to evaluate the benefits of creating and maintaining an Instagram account for the proper methods of communication appropriate material. Student profile and assignment. Instagram research and evaluation project.
8 Month: March Social Media monitoring tools. Social Media Analytics. Students will be able to utilize social media analytics to determine effectiveness of communications. Whole group online discussion and evaluation of social media statistics. Analytics Project-Success or Failure Social Media guidelines for employees and students. Facebook-creation of account profile. Company/industry social media policies research skills will be enhanced to include as social media platform usage. Students will be able to create a networking profile on Facebook to promote themselves in a positive manner. Facebook assignment Facebook profile assessment Group collaborative evaluation of sites. Standards: L, M, I, N, T, V, X
9 Month: April Comparison of effectiveness of social media platforms for various uses. Social Media platform for job search. LinkedIn Groups, Connections and effective posts. LinkedIn levels of engagement. Students will be able to evaluate the proper social media platform for intended business and networking outcome. Students will be able to utilize LinkedIn for networking in fields of interest. Students will join appropriate Groups based upon career interests. Students will be able to create proper and effective posts to draw positive attention to their profile. Assessment student LinkedIn profile. Evaluation of active groups and connections for career networking. LinkedIn- Company Project Assessment of student profile and posts in all social media platforms to date and student self-reflection on effectiveness. Standards: G, O, U, W, X
10 Month: May Collaborative creation of a study guide for final. LinkedIn creation of network, groups, and enhancement of profile. Evaluation of effectiveness of profilestudent, groups and connections. Students will be able to work collaboratively with another student to create a study guide utilizing Google Docs. Evaluation of potential career connections, groups, etc. Creating posts in LinkedIn. Students will be able to create posts that generate thought provoking discussions and connection engagement. Both the study guide and vocabulary test on will be utilized as summative assessment based on the required task. Students will and share document with teacher for assessment of completion and accuracy. Assessment of student profile based upon required criteria. Student selection of groups in LinkedIn for career networking. Standards: G, K, M, T
11 Month: June Social Media Specialist Final Project Creation of a Social Media Plan Simulation: Students are the social media specialist for their company. Social media, Web 2.0 terminologies. Students will be able to strategize and create a social media plan employing all of the social media tools utilized during the course. Students will be able to utilize social media platforms in the proper manner to engage an audience. Students will be able to present to the class and teacher their plans and the rationale for each step. Students will utilize Web 2.0 technologies in order to promote and network their products and businesses. Students will present and share with the class their final projects as a simulated Social Media Business Plan is created utilizing each type of social media tools. Vocabulary - final exam.
