3 Opening of the Riksdag session Tuesday 15 September 2015 The Central Band of the Swedish Army will perform and the Life Guards will be on parade at Riksplan. Inside the Kopparporten entrance to the old Riksdag building, the Kedjan Folk Dance Society will stand with the flags of the provinces. The music filling the Grand Stairway will be performed by the Torsö Vocal Ensemble. Awaiting the start of the ceremony, saxophonists from the Central Band of the Swedish Army will perform in the Chamber. The actual ceremony will begin when the Royal Family enters. At the request of the Speaker, HM The King will declare the Riksdag session open. A new parliamentary year can now begin. 1

4 The artists The Torsö Vocal Ensemble This four-voice ensemble was established in 2008 on Torsö in the Lake Vänern archipelago, outside Mariestad. Anders Rosén is the conductor and musical director. With joy as their driving force, the members of the ensemble work to continuously develop their vocal technique and timbre. Their repertoire spans from jazz to folk songs. The desire to convey the true essence of the Swedish folk song has become somewhat of a signature for the ensemble. For this performance, the ensemble will be joined by Simon Ljungman who will accompany them on guitar. The Kedjan Folk Dance Society The Kedjan Folk Dance Society has around one hundred members and was established in It is known for its folk dances, folk music, folk costumes and historical performances. The Society has a broad repertoire, with its own choir, as well as Renaissance music and dancing. Ever since 1983 when the Riksdag returned to Helgeandsholmen, the Kedjan Folk Dance Society has paraded with the flags of Sweden s provinces at the opening of the Riksdag session. 2

5 Trumpeters from the Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards Trumpeters from the Mounted Band of the Royal Lifeguards will perform in the Chamber under the leadership of Band Corporal Major Anders Ahlbin. They will be playing on herald trumpets, which are traditionally used for fanfares on ceremonial occasions. The fanfare they will play when HM The King has opened the Riksdag session is by Åke Edenstrand. Lisa Nilsson Style and soul all the way. This is one of the many glowing reviews Lisa Nilsson has received recently. Other genres she has worked with in addition to soul, include pop, jazz and ballads. Lisa Nilsson has her roots south of Stockholm. She made her debut on Swedish television as a dance student at Lasse Kühler s School of Dance in Three years later she came fourth in the Swedish heat of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Du ( You ). Her major breakthrough came in 1992 with Himlen runt hörnet ( Ticket to Heaven ). Lisa Nilsson has released some twenty albums. She gives concerts, and is a songwriter and an actress. 8 Follow the Göta Canal to the North Sea The Göta Canal is 190 kilometres long and has 58 locks. It was inaugurated with pomp and circumstance in 1832 and served as a major transport route in the 19th century. As railway and lorry traffic gradually took over, the canal became a tourist attraction. Every year, the Göta Canal is used by an average of 5,000 pleasure boats and ten passenger vessels from seven shipping companies. The waterway continues across Lake Vänern, through the Trollhätte Canal to the North Sea. Here by Sweden s west coast lie the Skagerrak, Sweden s most saline sea, and the Kattegat, which both have a rich flora and fauna. Herring, cod, mackerel, flatfish and shellfish are all common catches when the fishing-boats return to the harbour. Then it s off to the fish auction at full speed. Just south of Lake Vänern lies Lake Hornborga. A great number of cranes come to rest there on their journey northwards to their breeding places. The cranes attract visitors from near and far. The rock carvings in Tanum and Vitlycke tell us about life in the Bronze Age. Tens of thousands of carvings can be found there, and they are so singular and varied that they have long been included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. 6
