2 APAS SEASON Bringing National Performers to Hometown USA Verona Area Performing Arts Series What a season of music we have planned for you! We always strive to have outstanding musicians, but this year we found three exceptional vocal groups in all different styles of music, from jazz to a cappella and bluegrass. We have often offered an educational component to our series, and we are pleased that this year Tonic Sol-fa will present a vocal clinic to our high school and middle school choirs the afternoon prior to their concert. We thank you, our donors, whose support allows us to continue to present excellent concerts in our Performing Arts Center in the Verona Area High School. Our local businesses and corporations have been very supportive over our 13 years. 3 THE FOUR FRESHMEN Saturday, November 10, 2012 Universally hailed as the pioneers of the jazz-infused close harmony sound, The Four Freshmen have few rivals in the vocal group harmony field. The longest continually performing group, the original Four Freshmen began singing in 1948 and had a profound influence on American jazz and pop singing. Their first hit single, It s a Blue World was followed by big hits, Day By Day and Graduation Day. They have since recorded 50 albums and received 6 Grammy nominations. They inspired 1960s groups from The Lettermen to The Beach Boys, to The Mamas and the Papas, as well as the 70s Manhattan Transfer. The Four Freshmen have undergone 22 lineup changes, and while the current musicians were not born when the group began, their innovative sound of blending four-part harmony with big band jazz arrangements remains freshly intact. Each musician plays at least one instrument in addition to singing. In 2001, The Four Freshmen were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Downbeat magazine has named them Best Vocal Group twice in the last decade. The Four Freshmen Society, a 3,000 member fan club, meets annually. 4 TONIC SOL-FA Saturday, January 26, 2013 Using four voices and a tambourine, Tonic Sol-fa carves a niche as the nation s top a cappella vocal group, winning awards for original songs and albums in pop, gospel and holiday genres. In addition, their appearances on NBC s Today Show, with Jay Leno, Garrison Keillor and Shawn Colvin, along with thousands of loyal fans have encouraged over 2,000,000 album sales. The quartet performs an annual average of 150 shows in 48 states. Recently they made their third public television special for 1,800 stations across the United States. Their Toys for Tots public service announcement won an Emmy for Musical Composition/Arrangement. The New York Times describes them as A vocal kaleidoscope... unique to the human voice. Verona middle and high school choirs will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop with this popular group prior to the concert. 5 DAILEY AND VINCENT Saturday, April 20, 2013 Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent became the most heralded bluegrass group with their first album, Dailey and Vincent, in This three-time International Bluegrass Music Award Entertainer of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year received a nomination for the Grammy award for best country performance by a duo or group, with vocals for Elizabeth from the Dailey and Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers album. They have released several CDs in the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store exclusive music program. Bluegrass, Country and Gospel are common threads of America and with Cracker Barrel, so their guests are the same folks we perform for and reach out to through radio, TV and CDs, explained Darrin Vincent.
