Instrumental Lessons at Ivybridge Community College At Ivybridge Community College we have an amazing group of instrumental teachers who offer private instrumental lessons on a variety of instruments. You can learn everything from Guitar to flute, or Drums to the Cello. All teachers tailor lessons to individual students, and will offer the opportunity to take Graded exams if that is what you want to do. Taking lessons will also give you even more opportunities to take part in music ensembles at the College. This booklet allows you to see the teachers at the College, and also the instruments available to learn. You can also contact instrumental teachers if you have specific questions about learning an instrument. If you have any questions about instrumental lessons at the college, please contact the music department.
Lucy Annetts Woodwind I studied at Leeds Music College and after a brief time working in London, returned to Devon. I teach all woodwind instruments and play all genres of music, adapting lessons to individual students needs and abilities. Most of my students take ABRSM & Trinity music examinations with some going to study music at University or music college. However I am happy to teach those students who want to play for enjoyment only. Many of my students also play with the Devon Youth Wind Orchestra of which I am the Chairperson and currently organising a music tour to Italy. During College time, I conduct the Flute and Saxophone ensembles and woodwind quartet. Currently I play flute with Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, Plymouth Philharmonic Choir and the Penrose Quintet. I also play multi woodwind instruments for local musical theatre productions. When I am not at the college, I am very busy repairing instruments for local education authorities, The Royal Marine Band and many local musicians and teachers lamusic@tiscali.co.uk
Julie Arrow Piano I teach the piano to a wide range of pupils. For those who wish to take exams I use ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall and London College Syllabi. I like to make music with others and enjoy playing duets. I love accompanying and play for concerts, exams and rehearsals for individuals, groups and choirs. I prepare pupils for their aural tests and theory exams. When I was at school I became a Junior at Trinity College London. I have a joint degree and teaching certificate in Music and French and a piano teaching diploma. I am a member of the ISM. I have lots of fun playing other instruments including the violin, harp, flute, guitar, recorder and singing juliearrow@gmail.com
Catherine Davies Singing My name is Catherine Davies. I have been teaching singing, keyboard and piano at Ivybridge since September I am also an experienced performer, chorister, choir trainer, choral director and accompanist. I was Musical Director of my college Musical Theatre group and the Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship for several years. I have a degree from Exeter University and two diplomas (singing and piano teaching) from Trinity College of Music, London. I teach classical singing, musical theatre and pop vocals, keyboard, piano, theory and aural. I prepare students for ABRSM, Trinity and LCM exams at all levels from Prep test to Diploma, and the performance elements of GCSE, BTEC and A-level examinations g.c.c.r@blueyonder.co.uk
Clare Garton-Sprenger Cello and Double Bass CLARE GARTON-SPRENGER teaches cello & double bass. She has a PGCE specialising in string tuition. Clare has much experience as a teacher, in one to one situations, groups, and in orchestral coaching. She has been a tutor at the Dartington Summer School, coached string quartets, cello groups, and many more, and over a period of some twenty years has taken students through to grade 8 with the Associated Board. Her performance experience is similarly wide, ranging from orchestral and chamber music to specialist Baroque performance style. She currently plays for example with Devon Baroque, the SW's leading Baroque orchestra. She is much in demand as continuo cellist for vocal and choral concerts. Clare studied cello with Antonia Butler at the Birmingham Conservatoire, gained qualifications in both cello teaching and recital with distinction and was winner of the BMI recital prize whilst a student. She studied Baroque cello with Charles Medlam, Jennifer Ward-Clarke and Judy Tarling. c.sprenger20@btinternet.com
Paul Hill Guitar Studied music at Dartington College of Arts and began teaching guitar in 1975 at Dartington Hall School and Stover School. Worked for many years as an instrumental tutor for Devon County Council at several community colleges. Recorded sessions for Radio2, Radio Devon,SkyTV and ITV. Worked frequently as an accompanist for various instrumentalists and singers. Has given over 300 performances as a soloist over the past three years at various venues. Teaching Grade Exams. Tutored pupils to Grade 8 passes in classical guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar. Teaching style - Encouraging pupils to learn to read music notation well; to accompany songs; to work at grade exams; to develop co-ordination between the hands; to play scales from memory. I use a combination of published music and arranging or composing music to suit pupils individual needs and technical ability. Paulhill49@gmail.com
Mike Isaac Bass Guitar and Electric Guitar Michael has over 30 years experience as a performer and 25 years in teaching. An honours graduate from Salford University with PGCE for post-16 education ensures the highest standards of professionalism at all times. All learners are given a programme of core skills and from there an individual learning plan can be formed. Some explore the rock and pop pathway with emphasis on tab and playing by ear. All guitar players learn the 12-bar blues and the basics of rock guitar soloing. Bass players learn blues patterns and creating basslines from chord symbols. Some bass players want to learn slap/funk techniques and this can be accommodated too. Others wish to use and become literate in traditional music notation, jazz studies can also be covered both chordaly and with single lines. Michael also runs ensembles across various genres. The lessons are always conducted in a friendly environment were the learner can feel relaxed and encouraged to explore music making to the highest possible level. mikeisaac@talktalk.net

During his army service he studied at the Royal Military School of Music and performed in all the major concert halls in London.
