9 Learner Stories Learner stories Charlotte Loveday, a mum to two boys, took part in a Family Learning course at St Peter at Gowts Church of England Primary School, Lincoln in 2008, and found she d caught the learning bug! Family Learning set me on the road for more learning Charlotte explained that it was the guidance and support of the Family Learning Tutor that had encouraged her in her learning. After attending the Family Learning course and gaining two literacy qualifications, Charlotte Everyone who starts one of our courses is achieving their own personal success by learning something new. Here are just a few of our success stories. Family learning provides small steps to success enrolled at Lincoln College, where she gained the qualifications needed to become a teaching assistant. At Lincoln College she was officially diagnosed as being dyslexic, but thanks to the one-to-one support, she was able to progress with her studies and very successfully gained a Grade A in her L3 CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education. Charlotte is now employed as a Teaching Assistant at St.Peter at Gowts Primary School. The school is very proud of her achievements. A bit of a boost! An exciting new course Boost Your Self-Esteem started in January 2012 at Riverside Training, Gainsborough. This popular five week course was designed to enable participants to improve their self-esteem, self-worth, self-belief and confidence levels. All learners shared a common experience that had affected their self esteem. The group developed a supportive, positive and happy relationship and have become good friends. The course has had such a positive impact on learners that they have started their own support network. Operation fly swat! This enabled them to form a fly-tipping squad as part of a multi-agency task force to clean up the local area. Learner Stories Some learner feedback: I was at a very difficult time in my life when I was introduced to this course. I cannot say how much this has changed my life. The Tutor has been an inspiration and has made me value myself and boost my self-esteem. I cannot thank her enough. It has helped me with confidence and to overcome my fear of walking in to a room. I have now realised that I have to change my life as I m the only person that can do this. Thanks to the Tutor I now have confidence and some trust in others again. I have also met a great group of people that I keep in touch with. I ve found the course beneficial towards my recovery from alcohol addiction. Dropped a dress size! For some, volunteering can be a route to employment, or a chance to try something different, which could lead to a career change. Training and supervision will be provided for all of our volunteers. A wide variety of volunteering opportunities are available, from helping out in your local school, library or museum, working with children and the environment to working with a local charity and supporting families. Local history groups Running Storytime sessions for children Carrying out customer surveys Computer buddies Heritage and museums Lincolnshire has a rich heritage that you can help to protect and promote. In museums the most popular volunteer activity is guiding. Volunteers provide guided tours for visitors at several of our sites including The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre and Lincoln Castle. Special projects To give you a taste of what might be available here are some projects that have been worked on by our fantastic volunteers. Access all areas Able and less able bodied volunteers worked on producing a film on Gainsborough Old Hall depicting how people used to live. The film showcased areas of the museums which were difficult for disabled visitors to access, thus improving the experience for our visitors. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender volunteers Our Collections Access Team has established a group of around 20 volunteers to create an oral history of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues in Lincolnshire. The theme is Out in the Stix. Whilst oral history is the main goal of this project the group hope to create a travelling exhibition highlighting LGBT history in the county. The group also provides a social opportunity for the LGBT community to celebrate their heritage. 32 All course details are correct at time of going to print.
