2 Inspection Report: The Natural Childcare Company, 6/03/2009 Introduction This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. Early years provision refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 3 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage. The report includes information on any complaints about the childcare provision which Ofsted has received since the last inspection or registration whichever is the later, which require Ofsted or the provider to take action in Annex C. The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 0). The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. 2

3 Inspection Report: The Natural Childcare Company, 6/03/2009 Description of the setting The Natural Childcare Company was first registered in It is a day care nursery that operates from a large, self-contained unit within the grounds of St James Junior School in the Shirley area of Solihull in the West Midlands. The nursery has four main rooms and an additional area called the Play Plaza. It has a fully enclosed area for outdoor play, plus use of the school playground and playing fields. The nursery also has regular use of the school hall. The nursery serves families from local and surrounding areas. It opens five days a week, from 7.30 until 8.00 throughout the year, with the exception of bank holidays and one week at Christmas. There are currently 62 children on roll aged from three months to five years. Of these, 33 children receive funding for nursery education. The nursery welcomes and supports children with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and children for whom English is an additional language. There is disabled access to the nursery. The nursery is registered on the Early Years Register, the Childcare Register and the Voluntary Childcare Register. There are 35 staff who work directly with the children. Of these, 32 have appropriate early years qualifications to level three or above, and two are qualified nurses. The setting is supported by a Managing Director, who is a qualified nursery nurse and a manager who has a degree in professional studies and childcare. There are four super-nummery nursery staff and two full-time housekeepers. The setting is supported by a qualified teacher and a Special Educational Needs advisor from the Local Authority Early Years Advisory Team. Overall effectiveness of the early years provision The Natural Childcare Company is an outstanding day care provision. The staff have an excellent understanding of how young children learn and provide exciting and stimulating activities to ensure that learning is interesting and fun. The nursery is an inclusive setting that provides exceptionally well for the needs of all children, including those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, for children who speak English as an additional language. The staff care for the children exceptionally well and place a strong emphasis on their safety and welfare. Their self-evaluation is outstanding. They are constantly evaluating and improving the provision of care and early years education, to ensure that it is always of the highest possible standard. What steps need to be taken to improve provision further? To further improve the high quality early years provision the registered person should consider: further develop the outdoor provision and garden area. 3

4 Inspection Report: The Natural Childcare Company, 6/03/2009 The leadership and management of the early years provision Children are very happy, settled and well protected. Effective safeguarding policies including rigorous recruitment and vetting procedures are in place. All paperwork is detailed and of the highest standard. The staff work exceptionally well as a team and the views of all staff are valued. The managing director is ably supported by a very strong and well qualified manager. They work well together with a clear and united vision for the setting, supported by continuous and robust self evaluation to ensure that the provision is constantly updated and improvements are made where necessary. The staff are all experienced and qualified practitioners and both managers are very committed to effective training to keep the staff fully informed of best early years practice. Four members of staff support the nursery in a managerial or administrative role and two full-time housekeepers keep the nursery spotless. The staff meet regularly to discuss ways to make the setting an even more fulfilling and interesting environment for the children. Parents are very happy with the nursery. They are kept exceptionally well informed by way of a notice board that includes copies of current policies and procedures, photographs of staff alongside an explanation of their roles, and the weekly menus. Security to the setting is extremely robust. The front door is accessed by an electronic entry system and there are security cameras in every room. Pick up procedures are also very secure and ensure the children are safely handed over at the end of each day. Parents speak very highly of the nursery. One parent said typically, We looked at a number of nurseries before choosing this one. The nursery just goes from strength to strength. The staff are approachable, discreet and more mature with greater experience and training. They build strong relationships with the children. Children s first steps or important events are often caught on camera and sent directly to parents mobile telephones so that parents feel fully informed of their children s progress. The nursery is supported well by the local authority and other outside agencies are contacted when necessary. The outstanding reputation of the nursery is such, that on the day of the inspection an Early Years Advisor from another region had come to visit the nursery to observe its exemplary practices. The quality and standards of the early years provision The Early Years Foundation Stage provision is outstanding. The setting offers an holistic environment where all children thrive and are happy. The staff have a very clear understanding of child protection and safeguarding matters. The nursery is clean, spacious and welcoming. All learning is well paced and matched to each individual child. Children are encouraged to become independent learners. For example, they self register when they enter their base room in the morning, choosing their names written on ladybirds to place on a large leaf on the wall. A major theme of bugs presently runs through the nursery and many activities to promote this are evident. For example, hanging baskets with butterfly chrysalis are displayed in the play plaza to which all children have access and the pre-school children are making mini-diaries of their development. An exceptional variety of 4

5 Inspection Report: The Natural Childcare Company, 6/03/2009 appropriate resources are stored on low shelves in storage boxes with a photograph attached to them so that the children know what is available and are able to access them independently. The children play a dynamic role in their own learning and many activities are child led. Teaching is consistently inspiring and highly motivates children so they are engrossed in activities which provide optimal challenge. Evidence of all areas of learning is clearly shown on informative and colourful displays. For example, patterns and shape, marble painting or fire engine words such as hiss and splutter. ICT is very well resourced and the children are encouraged to play with programmable toys, computers and are confident to take photographs or videos independently. Messy play such as sand, water and painting are always available. The children s work is valued and clearly displayed to build self-esteem and confidence. Visitors enhance the quality of the early year s education. A display to record the recent visit from the fire service has examples of mark making for emergent writing, key words and paintings of red fire engines. Diversity is celebrated. For example, the staff dressed in saris for Divali and Bangla Bunny came to teach the children to Bangla dance. Vegetable curry was served for lunch and poppudums and dips were served at snack time. The children learn about the importance of personal hygiene through the effective daily routines in place. They wash their hands before having their meals and snacks and when they come in from the outside play areas. Children are encouraged to wipe their own faces and hands with freshly laundered flannels after eating their meals. The children's health needs are very well supported and precise procedures are in place. Two of the staff team are qualified nurses, therefore the children's safety and welfare is comprehensively considered at all times. All beds where children have their naps are thoroughly cleaned after every use. Delicious meals are prepared on the premises and the menu is varied and well balanced. Children are encouraged to serve themselves from a range of fresh and dried fruit and raw vegetables. They are taught about healthy eating and menus consider all children s dietary needs. Fresh water is available at all times. The younger children select their own cups whilst the older ones learn to pour their own water and wipe up the dribbles afterwards. The children are also encouraged to help to set the tables and a song about good manners is sung to reinforce appropriate behaviour at mealtimes. The children keep active and physically fit enjoying an extensive variety of outdoor toys and equipment including wheeled toys, and suitable equipment in the school hall. The older children have been actively involved in designing the layout of a new garden to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs. The children are looking forward to planting their seeds when the garden is finished. They will then be able to cook their vegetables, as cookery is an important and regular part of the curriculum. The outdoor learning environment is not free-flow but the children are encouraged play outside whenever they want to. The large playing field is an excellent space to run around in and is used for the summer sports day. A large tree provides an excellent shaded area where children can sit underneath and quietly read or practice their writing. The children are regularly taken for walks to the local park and learning opportunities such as searching for bugs with their own self-made binoculars are encouraged. Planning is a strength and supports all areas of learning. It is done on a long and medium term basis as well as every week, and is informed by robust assessment. The planning meets the needs of all abilities of children. It particularly targets children who need extra help to make sure that all children get the support 5

6 Inspection Report: The Natural Childcare Company, 6/03/2009 that they need. The children choose a key worker when they have made an appropriate connection with a nursery nurse. This key worker then supports them fully to ensure that the children are individually cared for and that they are all making progress. Assessment is clear, well developed and fully supports the children s learning. There are a number of robust systems in place including individual Learning Journals where each child s significant steps are recorded and evaluated with photographs and comments. This is a working document to target and record areas of achievement and/or concern and is cross-referenced regularly with ongoing observations and discussions to update and inform planning. 6
