He will travel to China to examine the perceptions of water quality and the development of potable water systems. McGovern award winners News@MITSloan is a weekly student newsletter that updates you about what is happening on campus. The Patrick J. McGovern 59 Entrepreneurship Award is given to an individual or team that, in working closely with the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, has made a significant impact on the quality and overall spirit of entrepreneurship at the Institute. The award s objective is to motivate future student leaders, raise the profile of student-led organizations, and reward individuals for outstanding achievement in building entrepreneurial excellence. MIT Sloan recipients include William B. Evans, SB 14; Birju Shah, MBA 12, and Parul Singh, MBA 12. We welcome story ideas, photos, suggestions, and comments from students, faculty, and staff. 2 Master of Finance Progam Awards The following Master of Finance (M.Fin.) students will receive an M.Fin. Achievement Award for their significant impact on their classmates, the M.Fin. program, or the broader MIT Sloan community. Marie-Anne Bazerghi is recognized for her outstanding leadership and contribution to M.Fin. and MIT Sloan. She is a great M.Fin. ambassador who is generous with her time. Bazerghi demonstrated an exemplary level of leadership and personal initiative in organizing numerous activities throughout the year that have enhanced the sense of community among Master of Finance students across the School. Marie-Anne Bazerghi, M.Fin. 12 Rongke Kevin Lin is recognized for his outstanding leadership and for his care and attention with which he represented the M.Fin. program during all M.Fin. events, Senate meetings, and other key initiatives. Lin s contribution to the retirement finance panel during the 2012 Investment Conference in addition to leading the Sloan-Wiki initiative is truly appreciated and deemed to be a huge success. Lin is known to listen to his classmates, has a passion to help others, and is known for always being visible his biggest contribution. Nathan Morris and Antoni Muhawi are recognized for their Rongke Kevin Lin, M.Fin. 12 leadership as Co-Presidents of the Quantitative Finance Club. Their seamless transition of the Quant Finance Club from its founding members to the current class was a critical component to the ongoing success of the club and connection to the M.Fin. program. In addition, under their leadership, the club was a co-organizer of the student 2012 Investment Management Conference, which was a great success. Johnny Jesson has been a significant help to the M.Fin. admissions team this year. He has actively and enthusiastically attended many admissions events, including monthly Friday morning information sessions at 8 a.m. He is always willing to lend a hand and go above and beyond to help out with prospective students. He truly made an impact on the experience of prospective students visiting campus. Antoni Muhawi, M.Fin. 12 Nathan Morris, M.Fin. 12 Jonny Jesson, M.Fin. 12 Rodolfo Lazo has been a principal member of the M.Fin. Speaker Series Committee throughout the past year. His active and engaging leadership in collaborating with and hosting top finance professionals on behalf of the M.Fin. 3 MIT Sloan Fellows Progam Awards Three members of the MIT Sloan Fellows Class of 2012 recently received military promotions. They include Brian Beachkofski, who was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve. David Chua was promoted to Colonel in the Republic of Singapore Army, and Alan Goh was promoted to Colonel in the Republic of Singapore Navy. Three MIT Sloan Fellows, all members of the Class of 2012, also received Legatum Fellowships. They include: Abdallah Khamis, Satyajit Suri, and Godfrey Waluse. MBA Awards The Howard and Carol Anderson Fellowship in Entrepreneurship for excellence in academics and entrepreneurship within the context of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship goes to Laura Esnaola, Shambhavi Kadam, and Kourosh Kaghazian, all members of the MBA Class of Sloan Fellows from l-r: Alan Goh, David Chua, and Brian Beachkofski. 4 Petersen Award The Petersen Award is given each year to two students who have made significant contributions to the community. This year, the award was given to two members of the MBA 12 class: Michelle Charnas is a Co-President of SWIM, an Ambassador and pilot, as well as COO of SloanGear. She is also co-leading the Core Pilot selection committee. Patrick Flynn and Michelle Charnas, both MBA 12 (Photo by Sarah Foote) Patrick Flynn is one of the Co-Chairs to the Dean s Student Advisory Council and co-founded a new student club, the MIT Sloan Water Initiative which led to creating and co-leading a Study Tour to Singapore and China to study the business of water. Martin Trust Community Fellow A member of the Class of 1958, Martin Trust, along with his family, is a close friend of MIT Sloan. Each year the Martin Trust Fellowship recognizes excellence in members of the graduating class. The winners this year include Clara Brenner, Maggie Dreifuerst, Marisa Gerla, Julia Lein, and Jeff Phillips, all members of the MBA Class of Brenner has worked with many different student organizations she was a Co-Director of this year s SWIM conference, as well as Co-Chair of the Class of 2012 Class Gift Committee. (Photo by Sarah Foote) Lein was also a Co-Director of the highly successful 2012 SWIM conference. Additionally she founded the Politics & Policy Club and expanded programs that she worked on through Net Impact, Sustainability@Sloan, and the Martin Trust Center, all in the interest of furthering the visibility and prominence of social impact issues within her class and the MIT Sloan community. Dreifuerst was nominated not only for brilliant execution of the 2012 AdMIT weekends, but for her sustained engagement with developing the pipeline of bringing the best women to MIT Sloan by establishing strong ties between Admissions and SWIM. She is also a Senator, a Vice President of SWIM, and serves on the Board of High Spirit, a non-profit that serves people with disabilities in Cambridge. Gerla is not only completing her MBA but also is in the midst of earning a second degree from Johns Hopkins University s highly acclaimed School of Advanced International Studies program in International Relations. Gerla served as Co-Chair of the Dean s Student Advisory Council, was Co-President of this year s Latin Conference, and a Brazil Education Trek lead organizer. Phillips was the Vice President of Academics for the Student Senate as well as a Co-Chair for the Cohort Representative Group. He was also a lead organizer for the 2012 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference and Co-President of the Entertainment, Media, and Sports Club. 4

5 Henry Ford Award The Henry Ford Award goes to the Sloan leaders, Juan Heyl and Nabil Laoudji, both MBA 12. They have worked tirelessly to further the conversation about values within the MIT Sloan community through creative and compelling initiatives such as the Values Pillars project and the Yarn storytelling events. Sherburne Scholar The Sherburne Scholar is recognized for their dedication to building community during their time at MIT Sloan. Juan Heyl and Nabil Laoudji, both MBA 12 (Photo by Sarah Foote) This year s winner, Cressida Pollack has made a tremendous impact on MIT Sloan through her work as Co-President of the Sloan Student Senate as well as her work co-chairing the Cohort Representative Group and organizing the first ever student-led Action Learning SIP course. Henry DuPont Award This year s DuPont Award recipients are the Class of 2012 and Class of 2013 organizing teams for the Japan Trek. This year the Class of 2013 organizers graciously invited a staggering 124 classmates and their significant others to their home country for a well-organized introduction to Japan. Cressida Pollock, MBA 12 (Photo by Sarah Foote) This effort was built on the backs of the Class of 2012 organizers who had a significantly different experience when their trip was canceled because of the 2011 earthquake. The 2012 group immediately galvanized support for their home with the Stand with Japan campaign, spread across five Boston-area campuses, which helped the community to raise $20,000. Seley Scholarship The Seley Scholar Award is the most distinguished of MIT Sloan s Achievement Awards. This year s Seley recipients are Maryanna McConnell and Joshua Rider, both MBA 12. Joshua Rider and Maryanna McConnell (Photo by Sarah Foote) McConnell has been active with the MIT Sloan Senate and helped create and launch the Senate s OneSloan efforts, and she has also been very involved with SWIM events. Rider has impacted the MIT Sloan student experience from candidacy through alumni status as Co-Chair for the AdMIT Weekends, as an active President of the Finance Club, and as Co-Chair of the MBA Class of 2012 Gift Committee. 5

6 PhD Awards Two doctoral students win awards PhD student Mabel Botelho Abraham was selected as the 2011 recipient of the Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship this past year. Mabel Abraham, PhD student Congratulations to Cristina Nistor, PhD 12, winner of the Marketing Science Institute s 2011 Alden G. Clayton Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Competition. Nistor s proposal, Pricing and Quality Provision in a Channel: A Model of Efficient Relational Contracts, was one of 80 submissions in the annual competition, which encourages doctoral work on important topics in the marketing community. Honorable Mention went to Daria Dzyabura, PhD 12, for her dissertation proposal, Consumer Search in High-Involvement Categories: Optimizing the Sales Strategy when Consumers Learn their Own Preferences through Search. EMBA awards Voorhees Named to M&A 40-Under-40 Class Cristina Nistor, PhD student The M&A Advisor has named Jacob Voorhees, EMBA 13, a founding member and partner of Capstone Partners LLC, to its prestigious 40-Under-40 dealmakers list. The 40-Under-40 list recognizes emerging leaders in the M&A field. Winners have reached a significant level of success while still under the age of 40, and were chosen on the basis of the nominee s career accomplishments, professional expertise, community and/or charitable involvement and unique circumstances. 7 Peer Recognition Award winners MIT $100K ACCELERATE, has been awarded the Peer Recognition Award (PRA). Students named in conjunction with this are Andrea Ippolito, SDM student, and Dennis Jiang, MBA 12, and the entire MIT $100K organizing team. ACCELERATE is a contest focused on helping entrepreneurs execute new product ideas. Teams receive mentors, design partners, office space and $1,000 in seed money. After receiving an unprecedented 262 applications, ACCELERATE supported 30 teams and received considerable press coverage in The Huffington Post and The Boston Globe among others. Yarn creators Juan Heyl and Nabil Laoudji, also recently won a Peer Recognition Award. The Yarn has provided an opportunity for Sloanies to step up and share personal stories that bring community values to life. Other Peer Recognition Award winners include MIT Sloan Design Works! Korea Trek organizers: Wontae Cha, Tommy Choi, Janet Choi, Andy Choo, Autumn Hong, Kyungnam Hwang, Younghoon Kang, Seung-Kyu Kong, Joy Lee, and Hyobin Song. Investment Management Conference organizers: Ophir Barone and Rami Husseini. The brand new MVP award goes to the following individuals for their contributions to the MIT Sloan community: Tommy Choi, MBA 12, for his continued leadership in encouraging an inclusive and empathetic MIT Sloan community. Marisa Gerla, MBA 12, for coordinating the Brazil study tour and Latin Conference. Pablo Reinoso, MBA 13, for writing and directing many of the C-Function teaser videos. Stephanie Tsai, MBA 12, for creating an all-inclusive, MIT Sloan-based independent party scene for first-and second-year students to interact. Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation awarded 2012 Monosson Prize for Entrepreneurial Mentoring The MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation and its leadership team were the recipients of the Annual Adolf F. Monosson Prize for Entrepreneurial Mentoring presented at the Celebration of Entrepreneurship at MIT held last month. Continued on page 8 7

8 Continued from page 7 This year s prize honors the MIT Deshpande Center and its generous donor and splendid entrepreneurship mentor, Gururaj Desh Deshpande, along with Professor Charles Cooney, the faculty chair of the Center since its launch, and Leon Sandler, its Executive Director, said MIT Sloan Professor and Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship Chair Edward B. Roberts, who presented the award. The Deshpande Center was established at the MIT School of Engineering in 2002 to increase the impact of MIT technologies in the marketplace. Since its first request for proposals, the Deshpande Center has reviewed more than 500 proposals, funded 90-plus projects with over $11 million in grants, supported more than 300 MIT faculty and their students from a diverse array of departments across campus, engaged 100-plus volunteers from the venture and entrepreneur community, and witnessed the creation of 26 companies that have raised over $350 million in funding and have employed more than 400 people. The Deshpande Center supports a wide range of emerging technologies including biotechnology, biomedical devices, information technology, new materials, tiny technologies, and energy innovations. Faculty Awards MIT Sloan marketing award honoring GM research pioneer Buck Weaver presented to Glen Urban Glen L. Urban, Dean Emeritus and the David Austin Professor in Management at MIT Sloan, was honored with the Ninth Annual Buck Weaver Award for Marketing. Established by MIT Sloan in 2003 and sponsored by General Motors Corporation, the award recognizes individuals who have made important contributions to the advancement of theory and practice in marketing science. Urban is a leading educator and researcher specializing in marketing and new product development. He has been a member of MIT Sloan s faculty since 1966, serving as Deputy Dean at the school from 1987 to 1991 and as Dean from 1993 to Glen L. Urban Tom Malone wins honorary doctorate Tom Malone has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Zurich. This honor is in recognition of the importance and diversity of his scientific contributions to the interaction between information technology and economic sciences, particularly the influence of information technology on market Professor Tom Malone structures, coordination problems, and collective intelligence.
