2 The Roosevelt International Academy (RIA) Young Social Entrepreneurs Program (YSEP) at Brown University Daring entrepreneurs across the world are launching new types of start-ups, called social enterprises. Their goal is to blend profit with purpose: to create powerful new businesses that make money while improving people s lives. A new generation of entrepreneurs is proving that innovative, new, socially responsible business, can in fact change the world. YSEP Program Overview RIA and Brown University s Swearer Center for Public Service are joining forces to offer a dynamic, immersive 2-year program that focuses on social entrepreneurship. Students accepted into this extraordinary applied program will: Learn about entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, leading and managing organizations and people Develop personal and practical skills, insight into how the world works, and a better sense of their place and role within it Practice, by developing a business model and a business plan Apply what they learn, by testing and validating concepts in the marketplace Collaborate with other students; compete to win a prize for the best business plans Earn a certificate from the Social Innovation Initiative at Brown s Swearer Center Contingent on performance, earn a letter of recommendation from the YSEP faculty What Makes The YSEP Unique Experience University-level, extended 2-year program model, custom-designed to prepare students for a career in world-changing business initiatives Intensive weekly instruction provided by experienced University faculty and practicing social entrepreneurs Classes on Brown University campus, supplemented by in-residence modules and study support at RIA Exceptional opportunity to both learn and do: an applied, collaborative experience here in Providence and back in your home country Unique opportunity to explore Brown University and build relationships within the Brown community Successful performance delivers a certificate of completion from Brown s Swearer Center and RIA Outstanding students may earn recommendations from YSEP faculty A cash prize awarded to the students with the best business plans YSEP Quick Facts YSEP begins in September of 2014 YSEP takes place on the campuses of Brown University and RIA YSEP is a college preparatory program with a Certificate from Brown s Swearer Center Only 20 international students will be accepted to the YSEP in 2014 Only students attending RIA and its American Partner High Schools may participate YSEP is a two-year program that begins in 10th or 11th grade About The Swearer Center For Public Service MAKE CHANGE. Through valued partnerships with faculty, community practitioners, and others across the university and beyond, The Swearer Center deepens Brown s mission to serve the community, nation, and world through innovative, thoughtful approaches to social change. Program Brown University stands apart for its commitment to social impact and innovation, whether through campus initiatives, courses, or careers: Each year roughly 700 volunteers participate in 20 student-led community programs throughout Providence Fellowships and internships support nearly 100 students each summer to engage in research or direct service around the world Over 100 students have participated in the Social Innovation Initiative Fellowship to design, launch, or build on social ventures

3 Young Social Entrepreneurs Program Snapshot The YSEP provides students with theory, academic insight, practical entrepreneurial tools, guided in-market experience, and a forum for intensive collaboration and reflection with faculty, business leaders, and peers. The YSEP program takes place over 2 school years (11th and 12th grade) and the summer between the two. YSEP students will have an average of 7-9 hours per week of programming including lectures, seminars, workshops, field trips and supervised study time. Program activities take place two times per week on Brown University campus and on Sundays at RIA campus. Here s a snapshot of the curriculum, with the target module themes we explore in the YSEP: MODULE KEY QUESTIONS CURRICULUM & ACTIVITIES SEMESTER 1Social entrepreneurship framework and tools What s a business, what s social change and impact, what s an entrepreneurial social enterprise? 4 About the Social Innovation Initiative at Brown The Social Innovation Initiative (SII), a program of the Swearer Center for Public Service, promotes an open culture of collaborative learning and community impact at Brown University with programming focused in four key areas: venture development, academic connections, campus activities, and life beyond Brown. The programs supported and made possible by a powerful network of changemakers who are starting, working for, and contributing to social impact ventures around the world. Since 2007, SII has connected with hundreds of students, alumni, and faculty and sparked Brown s selection as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus. Our award-winning Social Innovation Fellowship provides students from Brown and RISD with the funding to grow a social venture over the summer supported by a year of intensive skills training, complementary coursework, and a community of entrepreneurs offering mentorship and critique. Meet a Brown student who has pursued this path: Meet Myron Hometown: Hong Kong Concentration: Economics / Development Studies I engage ethnic minority communities in a supply chain to help them achieve their aspirations. - Myron Boost Juice Company - Central Highlands of Vietnam As a C.V. Starr fellow at the Swearer Center, Myron studied social entrepreneurship, created a business plan and launch the Boost Juice Company. Boost Juice creates a business platform for ethnic minority communities in the Central Highlands through the cultivation of gac fruit a super fruit indigenous to Vietnam. Given the recent boom in the functional beverage market, our venture looks to bring an affordable mixed-fruit gac juice ( Boost Juice ) that serves as a healthy, vitamin-rich beverage to US consumers. The profit generated from selling the product will provide farmers with a sustainable income stream to make a livelihood for themselves. In the long run, we also hope to create a local non-profit organization to advance other social aspects below the national standard, including agricultural sustainability, financial management and education. The intricacy and immediacy of global challenges we face require that universities provide students with not only the acquisition of knowledge but the tools for action as well. - Alan Harlam, Director of the Social Innovation Initiative

For more information about RIA s programs, please visit RIA Advanced Certificate Programs RIA believes that high school students should not have to wait until college or later to have the opportunity to identify, examine and develop the passions, ideas and interests that will influence and guide them for the rest of their lives and professional careers. With this in mind, RIA has partnered with leading colleges and universities to offer Advancer Certificate Programs for students who wish to pursue specific fields of study at the highest level. RIAs Advanced Certificate Programs are available only to international students that are enrolled at RIA and American students enrolled at one of RIA s Partner High Schools. The Certificate Programs are taken in addition to the traditional American high school curriculum and take place after school and on weekends. Pro gra m Each Certificate Program is totally unique and designed to offer students advanced instruction in a particular subject area. Certificate Programs offer students the opportunity to receive instruction from well-respected faculty members on the campuses of RIA s partner colleges and universities. Upon completion of one of RIA s Certificate Programs, students will have gained college-level knowledge and experience that can be matched by few other high school students, American or foreign, anywhere in the World. With the help of RIA s guidance counselors, students can then leverage the portfolios that they develop in RIA s Certificate Programs for application to America s top colleges and universities.

6 About Rhode Island RIA is located in Providence, the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1636, it is one of the oldest cities in the United States. Providence is the third largest city in the New England region and is situated at the mouth of the Providence River, at the head of Narragansett Bay. After being one of the first cities in the country to industrialize, the city of Providence is today home to eight hospitals and seven institutions of higher learning, including Brown University, The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Johnson & Wales University. Rhode Island the smallest state in the U.S. and is famous for its beautiful coastline and four weather seasons. Rhode Island is one of the 6 states that make up the region of New England. Other than Rhode Island, this northeastern corner of the United States consists of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. New England is bordered by New York state to the west, Quebec, Canada to the north, and New Brunswick and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. RIA is approximately a 40 minute drive from Boston, Massachusetts and 3 hours from New York City. This central location makes it a great base for exploring the major cultural and economic centers of the East Coast. New England contains some of the oldest and most renowned institutions of higher learning in the U.S. The first such institution, Harvard College, is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Yale University is located in New Haven, Connecticut, Brown University is located in Providence, Rhode Island, and Dartmouth College is located in Hanover, New Hampshire. At the pre-college level, New England is home to a number of American independent schools (also known as private schools). The concept of the elite New England prep school is an iconic part of the region s image. The region has several of the highest ranked high schools in the U.S. Application And Admissions Information Only students enrolled in RIA s High School Programs have the option of also applying to the YSEP. The YSEP is an Advanced Certificate Program that complements and builds on the classic RIA High School Program. Minimum Admissions Requirements GPA 80+ TOEFL 65+ or SELP Demonstrated involvement in community service, volunteerism, leadership or business Application Requirements Complete standard RIA High School application package Complete YSEP supplemental application Age Requirements The YSEP begins in 11th grade but qualified 10th grade students may apply. 9th Grade students may apply for conditional acceptance in 10th grade.
