1 Founding Director, Lowell Institute School Associate Dean, Undergraduate Education, College of Professional Studies Boston, MA Executive Summary The College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University seeks a seasoned and innovative academic leader to serve as the Founding Director of the Lowell Institute School and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education. Reporting to the Dean, the Founding Director/Associate Dean will assume responsibilities not only for the reshaping of the College of Professional Studies undergraduate academic portfolio under the Lowell Institute School, but also for leading all academic and faculty affairs for the current and future undergraduate portfolio as an Associate Dean within the College s senior academic administration. The College of Professional Studies (CPS) provides career-focused educational programs that are designed to accommodate the complex lives of motivated learners and offers them an educational experience founded on proven scholarship, strengthened with practical application, and sustained by academic excellence. The College of Professional Studies through the Lowell Institute School is the first-in-the-nation school focused exclusively on degree completion in the STEM fields, specifically for a diverse student body who have some undergraduate experience and wish to complete a bachelor s degree. A recent award of nearly $4million from the Department of Education s First in the World Grant will also allow the Lowell Institute to have a particular focus on the recruitment and retention of underrepresented student populations in the STEM fields through an innovative deployment of adaptive learning technologies. The Lowell Institute School is envisioned to assume existing undergraduate programming, including degree programs in business and the social sciences, and to develop new course offerings that provide students innovative, flexible and accelerated degree programs focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Lowell Institute will engage veterans, students transitioning from two year programs, and working professionals in need of tailored education to complete their academic degrees and will utilize traditional, hybrid, and online modalities to increase the accessibility of education and the likelihood of degree completion for its students. As a key member of the academic administrative team at CPS, the Associate Dean will play a key role in the College s day-to-day academic leadership and management for all undergraduate programs and support marketing, promotional strategies, public relations as well as external relationships and partnerships. S/he will lead the charge and oversee all efforts relating to employer outreach and workforce collaborations, student recruitment and stewardship, and coop/experiential learning opportunity development. The ideal candidate will be an experienced, forward-looking academic administrator with a broad understanding of undergraduate adult education, STEM subjects and workforce development. S/he will have a minimum of ten years experience in academic leadership; broad knowledge and expertise in instructional and course delivery technologies; a willingness to take strategic risks to broaden the goals of the College; and an exceptional talent for working collaboratively with others and for implementing and managing change within an academic environment. Moreover, s/he will share the college s commitment to a multicultural

2 student population and access in higher education. A terminal degree is required, commensurate with a faculty appointment and the equivalent of five years of exemplary college-level teaching and academic leadership experience preferred. Northeastern University is at the cutting edge of how education is changing at both undergraduate and graduate levels and currently offers students opportunities for professional work, research, service, and global learning on seven continents and through multiple platforms. The College of Professional Studies plays a critical role in this mission by fostering a learning environment where programs are grounded in theory and applied in practice. Specifically CPS s mission is to advance careers for working adults, to extend global education that applies a multifaceted approach to learning through strategic partnerships with industry, to establish national educational delivery methods which are considered to be best-in-class while providing outstanding access to individual students, and to leverage innovative educational models serving urban students obtaining college degrees and certifications. This success not only builds upon Northeastern s global network of alumni and industry partners but also creates pathways to the workforce and to graduate degrees for those seeking to further their education in the future. BACKGROUND About Northeastern University Founded in 1898 with a main campus in Boston, Massachusetts, Northeastern University has grown into one of the country s most prominent global experiential, private research universities. Through nearly 100 undergraduate and 167 graduate programs in 9 schools and colleges, Northeastern brings over a century of experience and leadership to deliver transformative opportunities for our students and inspire them to delve deeper, sharpen their focus, and pursue greater academic challenges. Northeastern s worldwide network extends to 160 cities and 85 nations and more than 3,000 employers are actively seeking Northeastern students for co-op and full-time positions each year. Northeastern s curriculum integrates classroom learning with real-world professional experience and is both grounded in the University s signature cooperative education program (co -op) and inspired by a rapidly growing interdisciplinary research enterprise and expanding global profile. This approach creates a unique environment a living laboratory, in which Northeastern faculty, administrators, students, alumni, and co-op partners are afforded unprecedented opportunities to experiment with 21st century learning approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration, an immersive curriculum, and opportunities to network across discipline, affinity and geography. As a market leader and pioneer, Northeastern piloted distance learning delivery modes in the 1970s and launched its first online degrees in 2003, long before other prominent educational institutions began their online programs. Today, the University enjoys an enrollment of more than 13,000 online and hybrid students and a portfolio of 100+ online degrees and certificates making Northeastern s offering the most comprehensive online degree portfolio and the largest scale student enrollment of any private research university in the country. Northeastern remains one of only three institutions of this type among the 40 largest providers of online education. Northeastern s vision is to translate its current national market leadership in the U.S. to become the global leader in professional experiential graduate education by creating a research university that leverages the competitive advantage of presence and exists across a network of global sites. This goal and strategic focus

3 is guided by Northeastern University s mission, vision, and academic plan, which call for expanding the meaning and impact of the university s engagement with the world and being a positive force for change in local communities and global society. The University s network of nearly 3,000 employers provide students with rich opportunities for real-world understanding through collaboratively developed curricular, cooperative education placements, corporate residencies and case studies, among a range of well-designed experiences. Northeastern has made substantial investments in and established a policy framework that informs program development in all areas of the institution. This uniquely Northeastern model is referred to as Online Experiential Learning. The Lowell Institute School Founded in 1903 as the School for Industrial Foreman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the early foundations of the Lowell Institute School provided continuing education to industrial foremen to enhance their professional skills. Over time, the school's curriculum expanded, offering two-year programs in mechanical and electrical engineering as well as courses in structural and civil engineering, computer technology, high-speed strobe photography, machine tool fundamentals, scientific glass blowing, house building, technical writing, and microprocessor systems. In the fall of 1996, the school was transferred to Northeastern University, becoming a division of the University's School of Engineering and in 2009, the school was moved to the College of Professional Studies (CPS) where it is more closely aligned with the College s mission of serving the needs of working men and women. The School currently offers three bachelor's-level engineering technology degrees: mechanical, computer, and electrical engineering technology. All of these undergraduate engineering technology degree programs are accredited by ABET, Inc. When A. Lawrence Lowell created the Lowell Institute School for Industrial Foremen in 1903, amid the boom of the second industrial revolution, the idea was daring and yet perfectly practical. The Lowell Institute was bringing essential knowledge and opportunity to the people doing the hands-on work of the new century. Now, a century later, the Lowell Institute School continues in that same daring and practical spirit. Like A. Lawrence Lowell s idea, it is driven by a clear need: to train the technologists who ll be the industrial foremen (and forewomen) of a new century and economy. In this next chapter, new bachelor s degrees will be added in the essential scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical disciplines the STEM fields. By helping motivated and capable students achieve their degrees in STEM fields, The Lowell Institute School gives them a pathway to reach their full potential; to master new and sought-after skills; and to pursue a wide variety of promising, in-demand careers. Reaching out to under-served students, veterans, and working individuals who might not presently dream of being able to complete their degrees, the Lowell Institute School will be an engine of change to elevate a population that is perfectly positioned to fill America s demand for trained workers in vital technical fields. Students at the Lowell Institute School will have access to STEM-related co-op and internship placement programs that are grounded in Northeastern s expertise in experiential learning. The Lowell Institute School s unique approach among undergraduate schools will also integrate student support efforts with curricular and pedagogical improvement and innovation to provide robust degree completion programs. With this flexible and collaborative model, the Lowell Institute School is designed from the ground up to accommodate both the needs and the strengths of working adults whose education may have been interrupted.

4 The nearly 3,000 students served by the current undergraduate program within the College of Professional Studies, include working professionals finishing or pursuing bachelor s degrees. The School will offer undergraduate credentials ( BS) and post baccalaureate degrees that are aligned with student needs and employer needs in the STEM fields. This includes 10 undergraduate majors in the STEM fields, 7 majors in business and social sciences and a pre-med post baccalaureate program. As the new iteration of the Lowell Institute School is launched, it is anticipated that new STEM degree completion options will be created. The current undergraduate portfolio within the College of Professional Studies has an operating budget in excess of $6 million. Founding Director, Lowell Institute School and Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs Reporting to the Dean of the College of Professional Studies and working closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs of the College, the Founding Director/Associate Dean will provide leadership in supporting the College s strategic goals. The leadership team within the School reporting to the new Director includes a Special Advisor Undergraduate Education, Senior Advisor Academic and Curricular Planning and Director of Academic Operations. In some cases, positions have been articulated in fix length appointments in order to allow the Founding Director/Associate Dean broad structural latitude when establishing the leadership structure.
