Reminder: Our first Book Swap will take place at our July 27 th meeting. So, gather up all those unused L&D books and bring them on the 27 th. You may find some titles you have not read! Also, the person who brings the most books wins a coupon for a free luncheon program!! There is still plenty of time to register for our July 27th lunch program at CB & Potts (Collindale Golf Course) with Hunt Lambert on CSU s very successful online and distance degree programs. CSU is a national leader in this area and Hunt has been involved from the beginning in the CSU Global program as founder and CEO. Find out why online programs in general and CSU s in particular are growing at such a rapid rate, what is behind CSU s success, and what the future holds. Programs are lined up through December so check them out below in the newsletter and on the website, and then calendar them in! Share your information! July will be our first meeting where members may share informational or promotional material at a table dedicated to this informal sharing. Note that this is meant to be passive in nature, meaning no hard selling and no approaching people with the material. At the May program and following board meeting we also decided to experiment with allowing educational institutions and providers of training services/products to display information on their services. Non members will be required to pay for the privilege of sharing while members may put out brochures or a small display at no charge. Future Chapter Events November 3 Technology Based Learning Solutions December 15 Developing Web-based Training We have one new member this month: Angie Koponen, KopoSync, LLC. We look forward to getting to know you. (In Angie s case, it is more of a welcome back!) Renewing members this month include Susan Keehley from Cheyenne who is our VP for Cheyenne programs. Thank you for renewing! We appreciate your continuing support. Jana West Kowalski s featured in this month s member spotlight. She is the Education Outreach Coordinator for the Colorado Public Health Training Center. See below to learn more about Jana and why she finds ASTD membership so valuable. The ASTD International Conference & Exposition (ICE), it is coming to Denver in 2012! Yes, that s right: Denver next year May 6-9, Calendar it now. Seriously! This is a once in a career opportunity to attend the BIGGEST annual ASTD event in your own backyard. We will need volunteers (400 hundred to be precise) to help with this humongous event (>8000 attendees), and in return, you will get reduced rate admissions. At this year s Conference, volunteers received one full day of conference registration for each

full day of volunteering, and they were able to purchase additional days at just $200/day. The regular full conference fee is $1100 for members and $1400 for nonmembers. Plus, volunteers for the preconference workshops (1-2 days) were able to participate in the workshop and receive the certificate! Plan to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to attend ICE for next to nothing. Stay tuned for details on how to volunteer. Chapter membership remains only $50 and ASTD national membership is only $169 if you are a chapter member (contact our VP for Membership, Barb Trowbridge, for details). July 27, 2011 Colorado State University and Distance Learning with Hunt Lambert (CSU) and Book Swap The market for online and distance education has been growing at over 15% for a decade while campus based program grow at 1%. Why? What does it mean to the high quality programs from your State University? Colorado State University s Division of Continuing Education recently announced its new marketing campaign as OnlinePlus. It offers 4 undergraduate, 27 masters and 3 PhD programs at a distance. CSU s Global Campus also offers undergraduate and graduate programs. What makes them different and which one might be best for you as you think about your personal and professional growth? In a market where high school graduates have 24% unemployment and college graduates 4%, and this year alone over 300,000 non college graduates lost their job while over 120,000 college graduates found work, you need to know your options. The great public land grant universities are rising to the challenge. Come find out how. Find out these answers and more from Hunt Lambert, Associate Provost of DCE and a founder and former CEO of CSU s Global Campus. Read Hunt s bio Book Swap During this program we will also have our first book swap. Have more books on evaluations, instructional design, needs analysis, and training tips than you know what to do with? Wish you could add to your collection but don't want to spend a fortune? Come & share the wealth at our first ASTD-NRC Book Swap! The books you no longer need could be someone else's new-found treasure (and vice versa!). As an added bonus, the person who brings the most books will receive a coupon for free admission to one of our monthly events in Note: You don't need to bring a book to attend. But if you can, that's great too. Click here for Hunt s bio Date: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 Time: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm Location: Collindale Golf Course CB&Potts, 1441 E. Horsetooth Rd, Fort Collins,

CO Costs: $15 NRC Members and Partners/ $25 Nonmembers August 16, 2011 The Ying and Yangs of Change Management: Creating a Yes/And Mindset for Managing Change with Linda Kennedy of Cocali Consulting Often we become VERY focused when leading and managing change. The focus is on changing to meet external demands or we're focusing on implementing new systems and process. These are great, yet incomplete. While an organization is focusing on meeting external demands, it also needs to meet internal demands. While developing organizational capabilities, there is also a need to develop individual capabilities. Come explore managing change through a different lens - one of interdependencies! Attendees will learn: Read Linda's bio 1. Learn key interdependencies that need to be managed during change. 2. Identify the upsides and positives of these interdependencies as well as the downside and negatives to create action plans and early warning signals. 3. Develop a yes/and mindset to manage these interdependencies. About the Speaker: Linda Kennedy is the founder of Linda Kennedy & Associates, a Leadership Development firm. She is fond of describing her work by saying: Leaders that Make a Difference are the Difference. Linda has the ability to help leaders sort through chaos and clutter to find alternatives to be even more successful. She is a catalyst for action. In today s economy, with budgets more scrutinized than ever, we cannot afford to simply produce great learning materials. Even the best learning initiatives have no impact if nobody knows about them. For our learning to have impact, we need to grab attention, generate interest and get the learner to take action. We need to become great learning promoters. This discussion will look at tips to grab attention, generate interest and get your learners to take action. Additionally, the discussion will explore social media and how IBM Training is using this channel to promote learning offerings, through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and RSS. Date: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 Time: 11:30 am 12:45 pm Location: Virtual (telephone and computer access required) Costs: $10 NRC Members and Partners/ $20 Nonmembers Register Here Member Spotlight Janna West Kowalski By Barb Trowbridge VP of Membership

Occupation: Janna serves as the Education Outreach Coordinator for the Colorado Public Health Training Center in the Center for Public Health Practice at the Colorado School of Public Health. The mission of the Center is to create and foster practitioner excellence to improve public health practice at the system, community and organizational levels. West Kowalski is responsible for coordinating workforce development efforts to enhance public health core competencies among practitioners. She also serves as a national Shaping Policy for Health trainer for the Directors of Health Promotion and Education. Janna West Kowalski Date joined: 2009 What I have gained from my association with ASTD: The Northern Rockies Chapter of ASTD has provided fantastic networking opportunities with other training and development professionals in the region. The Chapter affiliation, along with my national membership, has also given me access to the latest research and resources. The quality of our programs and services at the Center for Public Health Practice has improved as a result of my involvement with ASTD. Other News & Events Presidents Corner Northern Colorado Human Resources Assn. (NCHRA) Please visit the NCHRA website for events. Colorado Career Development Assoc. We held officer elections in May and filled all posts except Communications and Marketing. Financially, we remain strong thanks to the very successful 2007 Disney fundraiser. However, we will need another successful fund raiser in 2013 to maintain our model of low membership and program fees. Programming: Our goal is to sponsor 15 regular programs in 2011, one each month in the Fort Collins area (except April) and one each quarter in Cheyenne. Through June we conducted five regular programs in Fort Collins and two in Cheyenne right on plan. The attendance goal for these programs is 250 and we have had 125 participants again, right on plan. In addition, we held one networking breakfast (goal is three for the year) and participated in a special program in Denver in April. Our goal is to achieve a satisfaction rating from you of at least 90%, and publish programs three months in advance. We are on plan to achieve both (90% through June and programs scheduled through year end). Last, we would like to break even on our programs, which we have done thus far (up $51). ASTD Rocky Mountain Chapter July 27 Time: 5:30 pm 8:30pm Evening Networking Event 3rd Annual Summer Extravaganza August 24 Evening Networking Event Visit the ASTD website. Loveland Chamber of Commerce Membership: Our goal is to add 41 new members and retain 50% or 39 of our 78 existing members so that we end 2011 at 80 members. As of June 30th we have fallen short on new members (13 so far) but are exceeding plan on renewals (32 so far). Consequently, although the mix of new/renewing is different than we planned, the bottom line is that we have 77 members which is just short of the planned 80 for year end. We also will continue to encourage national membership and plan to achieve 50% joint chapter/national membership (midyear data are not available). Our annual member and program survey will be conducted earlier this year in August/September to provide more timely input into our planning for Technology: Our primary goal here is to maintain our new web site, update it monthly, and look for ways to continue to make it more user friendly. The site has been updated 2-3 times per month and is current through the end of the year. In addition, we would like to add pictures from our programs to the site and promote

The Chamber hosts several event each month. Visit the Chamber website. the use of the new member directory - both of which we have been doing. Communications: The plan calls for us to publish our electronic newsletter each month as the single best way to communicate with you in a timely fashion. We have published every month for the last three years. We also have reminded you twice about upcoming events (T-2 weeks and T-3 days). We planned to share more information with you about the value of national ASTD membership and upcoming national events like the annual International Conference & Exposition in May which we have been doing, especially with regard to ICE in Denver next year. In addition, we have continued to work on our presence on facebook and Linkedin. Outreach and Marketing: Our primary goal here is to maintain our partnership with RMC of ASTD in Denver which we have done, including promoting the April special event with Ruth Clark. (Remember, NRC members are eligible for all RMC events at their member price!). We also attended the Spring Showcase in Fort Collins and plan on a fall business-to-business event in Cheyenne. Financial: The plan was to continue investing in our chapter s future (website, outsourcing, chamber memberships, participation in B2B programs and board development) without raising membership dues ($50) or program fees, resulting in a loss of up to $7560 for the year. To date our loss is well below plan at only $1266. While this loss will certainly increase in the second half, we should come in under the budgeted loss for the year if we achieve our program and membership goals. We will need a major fund raiser in 2013 to replenish our savings if we wish to keep dues and program fees low in the future. Board: Our primary goals are to find a VP for Marketing and Communication and to identify potential replacements for currently serving officers. The board plans to hold a midyear retreat and also plans to send two members to ASTD s annual chapter leader s conference. Elections were held and although there was no candidate for Marketing and Communications, we have some expressing interest. It remains our hope to fill this important position. A board retreat is planned July 25th from 5-9 pm to review year-to-date progress and address some strategic and planning issues. Members are welcome-just let me know you would like to come. As always, please let us know what else we can do for you and how you might help us achieve our goals. Questions: info@astd-nrc.org Please Unsubscribe Me
