1 In this issue: Editor s Notes From the President AGM - Committee Positions Photography Quote Open Photo Competition - May 2015 June Open Photo Competition Club Calendar Weblinks Editor s Notes Greetings all - in winter already! Where did spring and summer go? But, it will get increasingly beautiful for photography out there in winter, with crisp frosty mornings, a fine layer of frost on the ground, a little ice in streams and close ups of frost on plants and trees. And just think of how much you ll appreciate the warmth of home when you get there! For those interested, Ken Duncan has launched an award called The Real Australia Photo Awards. Ken speaks of two different genres - that of Photo Realism and Photo Illustration. These are fairly selfexplanatory, with photo realism being an real representation of the scene when you were there. Photo illustration is when you apply a lot of poetic license in post production - each has it s place. The awards Ken is running has a prize pool of $40,000 so go to to read more about it. It ends on 30 June 2015 so check it out - get those shutter fingers moving! From the President s Desk Evening all Firstly I ll announce that our Annual General Meeting is coming up, on 22 July. The AGM is always an important meeting where we elect a new committee, so if you would like to be involved in how our Club is run, please come along on the night. There is a list of positions and their description on Pages 2-4. We will also be having our Pecha Kucha night after the AGM, which is a different way of presenting images, in basically a rapid slide show - it sounds like a lot of fun! We have some new changes coming up that I think everyone will be excited about! We ll start with our Open Photo competitions and one of our ideas is to start up some theme nights again, which have been popular in the past - I ll talk a bit more about this on Wednesday night. Also, I mentioned the trip to Hill End in our last newsletter so don t forget - if you re interested in going, you need to speak with Jen Delaporte, our Social Secretary. It s a weekend at Hill End from Friday 3rd July to Sunday 5th July - you needn t stay all 3 nights if you don t want, just let Jen know as she needs to have confirmation of numbers in order to book. Drag out the thermal underwear for this trip - it will be cold! All members should have already received an from Jen and she has posted information on our Facebook page, so see her on Wednesday night if you re interested. Regards, Cable Release Editor - Marie McLaurin President - Brett Atkins Page 1 June 2015

5 Open Photo Competition - May 2015 The May Open Photo Competition was judged by Mark Kelly. 29 members entered a total of 103 images. 33 distinctions and 23 credits were awarded as follows - Colour Prints 48 Images 13 Distinctions 10 Credits Monochrome Prints 26 Images 7 Distinctions 3 Credits Projected Images 29 Images 13 Distinctions 10 Credits The Image of the Month for March was awarded to member Peter Sherlock for his colour print Anzac Kiss. His fabulous shot is shown below, along with a photo of Peter with his winning entry. This was an incredible image Peter - well done! Anzac Kiss Peter explains that his winning shot was a composite of two images shown at top right and included a texture layer. He gives some background information here This image was taken at the Brisbane Anzac march, where I was lucky enough to capture a tender moment between the old soldier and his horse. The soldier stopped and caressed the horse s muzzle and gently leaned forward and kissed the horse on the eye. When I saw the resulting image I knew that I could enhance it by overlaying an existing image of a sunrise, with the sun s rays reminiscent of the Rising Sun badge of the AIF, and add a texture layer. This provided the stunning finished result you see here. Alas, there is not enough room in the Cable Release to go into the Photoshop steps that Peter applied, but if you want more details I m sure Peter would be happy to oblige. Page 5 June 2015
