Follow us on Twitter! Thank you to our Sponsors! Statewide Visionaries: In January 2012, the Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) Workforce Training Center was awarded the Solar Center of Excellence Grant. The Solar Center of Excellence was established through the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solution's State Energy Sector Partnership, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) awarded through the U.S. Department of Labor. The goal is to establish a statewide, systematic approach to worker training in renewable energy occupations. 1 of 6 6/18/12 10:25 AM
2 Green Workforce Outreach - June 2012 Innovators: CNM will accomplish this goal by training in our Photovoltaic Academy, PV Maintenance and Monitoring, Solar Thermal Academy, Advanced Photovoltaic, and other courses. Specifically, CNM will train over 125 individuals this year, most of which are unemployed or currently working in the solar industry but are in need of updated training. As of June 5, 2012, 67 participants have been trained through the Solar Center of Excellence in the Photovoltaic Academy, a 50 hour course approved by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), 48 of these participants are unemployed and looking for work in green industries. All of this training took place in Albuquerque, however, CNM is partnering with colleges around the state to deliver this training at Santa Fe Community College, DoñaAna 2 of 6 6/18/12 10:25 AM
3 Leaders: Community College, and San Juan Community College this summer and next fall. Additionally, CNM will begin training in Solar Thermal in Albuquerque and in Santa Fe later this summer. If you are a business who is interested in hiring someone who is trained to work in the solar industry, please visit our FAQs page here, or call Stephanie Britton at Featured Student: Rhett Zyla Southwest Chapter Rhett Zyla has recently returned to New Mexico after having gained basic experience in energy management/resource auditing in Idaho. This was followed by various California utility and non-profit supported short courses and certificates in energy efficiency technologies and practices including Solar Water Heating, Facilities Management, Gas Heating, Light Commercial Energy and Water Auditing, BPI Building Analyst, and Industrial Biotechnology. Rhett is continuing to seek a comprehensive focus on green tech training, as noted by his recent completion of the Entry Level NABCEP Solar PV course through CNM. Rhett's focus on green technology is a natural extension of his academic training and early career as an R&D M.S. chemical engineer (UNM), in which he researched fuel cell oxidation catalysis (UNM), and diesel soot oxidation catalysis (Sandia Labs). He is currently volunteering part-time at the University of New Mexico's Department of 3 of 6 6/18/12 10:25 AM
4 Green Workforce Outreach - June 2012 Mechanical Engineering. His principal project is optimizing chilled water flow from the building's cold water storage tanks to enhance building cooling efficiency. Rhett is continuing to seek a comprehensive focus on green tech training, as noted by his recent completion of the CNM PV Academy and passing of the Entry Level NABCEP exam.
